The Niners defense forced tons of turnovers deep in our opponents side of the field all season. Still, Alex Smith managed to throw only 17 touchdowns while David Akers broke the record for most points scored by any Niners player in team history.

How many times did we watch our offense squander an opportunity in the redzone after being set up by our defense (gift wrapped scoring drive). Niners defense would hand us the ball in FG range and after the passing offense flamed out David Akers would put 3 pts on the board. THAT'S why the Niners passing yards were so low yet the point total was respectable.

How often did the Niners win games this season when our defense DIDN'T force a turnover near our opponents redzone? Hint...not very often

LOL. We were 14 - 4, lost the NFC Championship game in OT. And we would have probably won if not for 2 horrific KW's fumbles. Alex and this team did not play that bad. Alex had 5 TD's and 0 Int's in the playoffs. 4 pass, 1 rush and zero interceptions. That's pretty good playoff performance.

Agreed

You are dead wrong about his nature to win at all costs. DEAD WRONG. He proved that by being willing to set aside his gunslinger mentality at Utah to come back under multiple OCs with varying approaches, and finally come to full agreement with Harbaugh that the BEST way to win given the limitations of the team this past season (lock out, injuries, etc) was to play it very conservatively.

One thing we SHOULD all be certain of was that Alex Smith wanted in the worst way to prove all his doubters wrong. In order to do that he would have to complete a lot of important passes in critical situations, and that meant throwing a lot. No other way would convince the fantasy football-minded fans who judge the effectiveness of a QB on his yardage and TDs that he was the real deal. Therefore, for Smith to set aside his own personal goals in favor of a strategy that would help the TEAM win, he displayed a desire to win that many other players would not have chosen.

Having said that, let us not forget that he made some very big-time throws to Delanie Walker, Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis that brought big-time wins to the team. He DID make tight window throws as the season progressed but never did he waiver in his commitment to Harbaugh to play in such a way as to win football games. The throw to VD in particular was thrown at a time that fully met Steve Young's definition. As 49er broadcaster Ted Robinson said, "no one should ever doubt Alex Smith again." He DID display a huge competitive fire both in sacrificing his own goals for the team goals and in also making critical throws to win games that were otherwise hanging in the balance.

A quarterback that wants BADLY to win will follow the game plan presented by the coaches. Alex did that very well and put the team within one blown fumble call of the Super Bowl...unless you think he should have played like Jeff George.

Still a few pages behind, but THIS post was so worthy of that I had to stop briefly and say so.

Alex Smith to start 2012 season. CK7 the future begins 2013
He's got the body frame and athleticism of a Vince Young without the drama/headcase. He moved to California by the time he was five and has played QB since he was nine. Appears level headed and grew up a 49ers fan. Best of all, he hasn't been rushed into a significant role yet and he's simply absorbing what the coaches feed him. His accuracy increased each year in college and finished with a 58% completion percentage in a Pistol Offense.

Alex Smith will remain starter and under his veteran eyes the the O-Line will gel (what's the average age 19? lol) and team management to stock up with talent at the receiver position. CK7 2013 or 2014 (NEW QB NEW STADIUM )

Fixed.

The Niners won all those games because the defense kicked so much ass that it could be depended on to hand the Niners offense several short fields every game. Sure the Niners passing game was dog poo and we kept settling for field goals but our defense forced so many turnovers that it's didn't matter. We shouldn't expect that we can get back to the NFC Championship game without a much better passing attack.

I feel like that's a slap in the face to the offense.

I like how in the past when the defense absolutely blew, it was Alex's fault for not sustaining drives and obviously they made the defense tire out.

Now when we are in the top 5 of the NFL in Time of Possession (Yes, we were 5th), it's ONLY because the defense rocks and has nothing to do with the 49ers putting together some long scoring drives, whether FG or TD, helping the defense rest.

There HAS to be some middle ground there, because the fans saying each of these things cannot have it both ways. These things are intertwined.
Wow cant wait for him to hit the feild.....

What does this have to do with anything? Grossman and Kerry Collins made the Superbowl, doesnt mean they never needed to be upgraded. The weakest link on this team is the passing game and the QB is jus as much a part of that as are the WRs. Almost making the SB should have nothing to do with tryig to make he team better.

I agree. Game managers dont have long success. Alex Smith = Kerry Collins and Chris Chandler

CK is still an unknown. A huge question mark. I'm not a fan of QB's that come out of that gimmick offense because most don't come out that good. Who knows what he can do. Right now there is no solid info. He was a rookie last year and well looked like a lost rookie. A full off season maybe we can see what he can do. Harbaugh is in love with Alex like most of the people on here, so he is the starter. IMO the 49ers will make a big mistake and giving him a big contract.
