I would think short term would be this season and maybe next season. Long term would mean us signing him to a big long contract this off-season.

dangit. I can't remember who it is then, but I remember a QB coming out in the last few years and being surprised that he was actually older than Alex.
Flacco? Too lazy to look this stuff up atm..

yeah, that makes sense. if he keeps this up i can't imagine we won't bring him back, and i can't imagine he wouldn't want to come back.

GO ALEX!!!
Kind of surprising with the 11 for 19 percentage, lower than his average. I guess QBR isn't as anal about % as Passer Rating.

Alex will be the long term answer for this team because now he doesnt have a coach whos a complete moron. smith will want to stay because he finally found a system that works well with his talents and harbaugh will want to keep him because hes playing great football. hes only 27 and can only get better with another year in the offense, once he fully digests this offense i think he'll be untouchable, hes shown that he has the guts to throw now and he believes in himself, even throwing into triple coverage (delanie walker TD), his confidence is through the roof right now and i only expect him to get better. another game or two like he has been having and he definitely needs to be extended.

If we win the West and make some noise in the playoffs I say extend him. What do you guys think 3-yrs or 5-yrs?

I think Alex should be extended and have Kaep and Jesus Christ Superstar battle it our for #2. ( i hope jesus wins).
not much else to add that has not been said already. his age is still a good thing for us. and also, the fans aren't the only ones interested in seeing what he can do with a full off season and second year in this offense, right?
this. even down to the lord-god-king winning the #2.

I think the fact that 21% of america thinks he is the long term solution despite the fact that all they see is highlights which don't do anything to show how well he is playing and comments from Jamie Dukes which reinforce the notion that maybe anyone could be under center right now speaks volumes for how much he has changed the opinion of him. At the beginning of the season about 90% of the 49ers fans were convinced this was a stop gap move.
