Just thinking it must be hard on a team when a tall starting QB gets replaced by a short guy who has to run around to find a passing lane. The blocking is different, the routes, timing, everything.
I guess in a perfect world all three of your QBs would have a similar size and style of playing.

I've held the belief for months that McCloughan was fired because he got rid of Shaun Hill, and the alcoholism and family matters was just a nice cover up.
All of these QB moves and criticism of Davis pretty much confirms it. Hear me out:
1) Carr is signed Mar 8.
2) Hill is traded Mar 14.
3) McCloughan resigns Mar 18 (out of the blue mind you)
4) Singletary probably disappointed that Davis has not developed quickly enough and criticizes his worth ethic. He was probably hoping Davis would beat out Carr this year considering the Sing never wanted Carr because he already had a capable backup in Shaun.
5) Troy Smith is signed and Davis is cut, but Sing wants him on the PS.
Singletary has full reign on the 53 man roster with McCloughan out of the picture. It wouldn't surprise me if Troy Smith quietly beats out David Carr by week 3 for the #2 spot.

I like Davis, so I hope he falls through to the practice squad. With that said, I also like the signing of Troy Smith. I live in Baltimore, so I got to see him play a fair bit and I think he's actually pretty good. Before Flacco he was scheduled to be the starter for the Ravens after the Kyle Boller experiment failed.
What happened was he ended up getting really sick. I forgot with what but I remember him losing a lot of weight. I think he was a better passer than Flacco at that stage of his career, and had he not got sick, he'd probably be starting for the Ravens now.
I know it's only one guy's opinion on the internet (of all places), but to me he's leaps and bounds better than any of our current backups.
Word for word, exactly my opinion. I think it was something with his tonsils that kept him from starting, which at the time I thought was ridiculous since he ended up loosing the job to a rookie after having earned it by playing so well. I remember him showing up and doing really well for them and the only knock on him was his size or something??
Great move by Sing for making Baalke go out and get this kid!

My take on this has a lot to do with nate davis' learning disablility.
On the field, Davis has a live arm, good accuracy, decent mobility, and good pocket pressence. However, he never looked in control of the offence, which led to erratic play. Coaches were dissapointed on how difficult it was for Davis to learn the playbook. The learninig disability that negatively affected his draft stock is probably more of a problem than coaches initially thought when they took a chance on him in the 5th round.

This; not to mention the Nate Davis pick was also (all-on) McCloughan, and if nobody's noticed yet Sing has literally been mopping the roster of Nolan/McCloughan's trash from over the past 3 years (within a single week).

Agree...there must've been a good reason the Ravens released Smith instead of trading him. Maybe they explored a trade, but didn't find any willing partners. Whatever it was, it's our gain. Troy can play...and his experience suits Singletary much better than Nate's potential. Fans need to understand like other head coaches, Singletary wants guys who can win now. Potential doesn't win games...experience does. He's got another project in Jarret Brown on the PS, he doesn't need another on the active roster.

Went trolling at the Ravens forums and found these.
Troy Smith Rememberance
Troy Smith to 49ers
Apparently has wanted out since last season. Like Nate Davis, he is a developmental QB.
Some Ravens fans even want to pick up Nate Davis.

This just got interesting....Didn't Sing just name Carr #2?

MaioccoCSN: It should be an easy transition to new team for QB Troy Smith. Like the 49ers, the Ravens run the digit system for offensive terminology.

If it keeps everyone on their toes then its a good move. If he can actually help win a game then its a bonus.
I'm not really moved by the whole deal.
