Taylor Mays is a Niner!

He came up on a run and made a good tackle.

Looked like he lumbers around and didn't seem to have quick feet.

He also let a WR get behind him on a 9 route but it was over thrown. The guy was a good 2 yards ahead of Mays and the CB. Mays reacted slow to the throw.

On that pass by Manning to the area where Mays was covering, he looked robotic as he was focused on his drop to get to his spot too much, which is normal. The ball was in the air and it looked as if he was running in sand in terms of his reaction.

He was a little hesitant in his pursuit on a ball carrier into a crowd. It seemed as though he slowed up to let the ball carrier get tackled in the pile rather than exploding into it.


All in all, he's got a long way to go.

he gave up a play or two in coverage. he wasnt really in there long or if he was he wasnt getting involved cuz i only heard his name a few times. nothing glaring but he definitely needs to work on his angles when attacking the ball carrier or hes gonna get embarrassed.

A problem he has carried over from his USC days. I'm still not sure what we saw in Mays other than a workout warrior with great physical attributes.

Mays had a bad game in my opinion. I especially had my eye on him and Nate Davis throughout and he disappointed. He seemed to think too much out there, instead of just playing. He did have that tackle for a loss which was a good play on his part, tackle was good enough but could have been more sure. He defended the pass awfully. All in all I think he is putting too much pressure on himself. Reggie Smith on the other hand had a great day.

Once he learns the NFL game, which should be in a year, he'll be a badass.

He was obviously thinking narrow-minded on his assignment only to the extreme where he wasn't aware of the QB until it was too late. It almost seemed as though he was caught watching the play rather than seeing what's going on around him. That play where the receiver got behind him, he didn't react until he saw the ball in the air. It's like he didn't all think that the receiver could possibly run a deep route.

Let's hope he's not an Alex Smith type who needs everything to be understood before any of his athleticism shines.

Either way, he still looked very lumbering, sort of like a Chevy Impala trying to make a sharp turn. Speed and Power is there but that change in direction was lumbering.

Mays looked as advertised, bad in coverage, and good against th run mainly because of his physical attributes. He will be fine in a year as long as he continues to work hard. Very happy R. Smith is the #3 safety on this team.

Same types of criticisms that people made about VD a couple of years ago. Mays may not be totally ready and may not be a pro bowler, but the guy has some gifts and seems to be ready to work hard to get better. Can't wait to see him play once he has a little more experience.

How is this bashing? We are just talking about how he looked in his first game no different than how coaches are going to look at the film and see things he needs to work on or things he's not doing.

Yeah I don't think Mays will be making much contribution except on special teams. It took Goldson 2 whole seasons before he saw the field and it's taken R. Smith even longer to get to where he is now that we're hearing about how he's looked good in training camp.

I think we as a team, and Manusky specifically, like to take it slow with the safety's since they're the core to our success on defense.

werent Goldson and Smith hurt as well which slowed their progression, If Mays stays healthy I expect him to start for us next year

It is always best to take any preseason game with a grain of salt. Fans tend to overanalyze each and every snap from a player, and either make them a hero or goat far too quickly.

We all hope that Mays develops to be a terrific player, but the learning curve is challenging, and it is going to take some time to adjust to the game. Hopefully, he can pick up some valuable lessons from this game and progress.

All of this being said, I was not high on the selection of Mays, grading Georgia Tech's Morgan Burnett a full round higher (I gave Burnett an early 2nd round grade and Mays an early 3rd). Burnett, who was drafted after Mays, is currently starting for the Packers. I hope my analysis is wrong in the end, and the Niners selected the right player. I just think the Niners picked the wrong guy.

Noticable cons of Mays play... He missed a couple coverages where he looked back at the QB and lost track of his receiver, a TE in this case. This can totally be fixed as he learns the right time to glance at a receiver during his route progression. Other times when he focused on the receiver he was all over him and definitely showed he could cover. So basically its like the coaches said, he is trying to do too much too soon.

He also missed a couple tackles, most noticeably on the TD run by Addai. He got into the backfield so fast and got a hand on him but just took a college RB angle and not an NFL RB angle.
