Should have taken Clausen. Major mistake. I like Mays, although he is raw and may not develop (and I watched a ton of SC football, so I know him well), but you don't pass up a potential franchise QB, especially when you don't have a QB worth a sh*t.

Do you mean in the 1st round, or maybe they should have traded up to get him?

I mean they should have traded up a few picks to get him in the second.

How the f**kin hell do you make the assumption that clausen will be a franchise QB???? dude can't throw a long ball the only person who was in love was him was mel fkn kiper who wanted clausen's baby!

alex smith will make u put your foot in your mouth this year!!! CONTRACT YEAR!!! he will have a good yr. jimmy clausen! are you f**kin serious! if he was that fkn good then why did he fall to Carolina? How come no one trade up to get him??
Because more than half the league & scouts don't view him as a franchise qb!

You still riding Smith's jock? After 5 years? Your opinion is worthless. You know nothing.

LOL.

I am curious, though, as to how much your opinion is worth.
Dude looked up to Sean Taylor and idolizes Ronnie Lott
MBniner = Mel Kiper

Clausen as a franchise qb?

other teams with a qb situation worse than ours didn't think so either

Browns
Bills
Raiders
WElcome mays, lets hope you bring it to training camp and step on the field on opening day, as starter.
Well Mays sounds like a SS version of Vernon davis. Hopefully he can get his coverage skills up to par and I hopefully can learn to like the guy. he seems cool

I am extremely excited about Taylor Mays! If he would have came out last year, he was pegged as a 49er in the first round.

So the 49ers pick him in the middle of the 2nd round this year, talk about great value.

We needed a FS with ball hawking skills, but without the fire power to trade up for Nate Allen, we had to take the next best thing in Mays to play SS.

I am loving our first two round picks, but I am not too excited about buying the jersey of an O-line player.

I will be buying Taylor Mays jersey and will delight in all of his great plays he will make, THIS year! And when he lights up Larry Fitzgerald, that will be the icing on the cake!

LOVING this pick!

Horrible pick... Sing himself looked pissed in the war room. He did not want Mays, he wanted someone else.

Who gives a flying f**k who Sing wanted, he didn't even want Patrick Willis. Baalke got us Ginn and 3 f**ken great picks. I don't give a s**t about Singletary at this point. He's a great motivator, stick to that.

i agree with u but dang bro u curse more than Joe pecsi in "CASINO"
How fitting is it that with the 49er's #49 pick in the draft they take a player who idolizes one of the greatest 49ers of all time, Ronnie Lott; and went to the same school?

And that my milestone as a 49ers Webzone member was spent discussing how great of a pick it was?

Taylor Mays is destined for greatness!

Got it, his opinion is worthless too.

Let's hope our oline can block now with the draft picks, unlike last year.
Let's hope Ted Ginn can return kicks and PUTNS, unlike last year.
Let's hope Mays can fill in comfotably when M. Lewis rattles the brain again, unlike last year.

It's not who the Niners wanted, but they reluctantly chose him, and I'll root for him.

They wanted Nate Allen.

When Allen was picked Baalke looked up at the ceiling, then did a "damnit" flex...and then the room went into work mode, trying to figure something out. Singletary wasn't happy and eventually left the room.

When it came time for the pick, they were not excited, and casually shook hands and Baalke took his sheet from in front of him and crumpled it up and threw it away, disappointed.

Lets hope for the best though.

I'm not real happy about this pick however if Nate Allen was who they wanted they should have traded up to get him. Would only of cost them 130 points or a 5th round pick to jump the eagles who everone knew needed a safety..............ooops we have Ted Ginn and no 5th..oh well we could of gave up nxt years 5th or what ever it took. The people on this board seem to think that Baalke did this great Houdini draft act on day1...that my friends was dumb luck the board fell the way it did. Hopefully they can coach him up and make an NFL safety out of him.

Yea, I mean, I think they probably were looking to move up after he dropped another 5 or spots or so, but Philly traded up. Similar thing could've easily happened in the first when we did move up. Things aren't going to fall exactly how you want every time in a draft.

Even though I too would've preferred Allen, no one really knows what'll happen and Mays was great value and has a lot of upside that still has me happy with the pick.

Let's see what he can do.

*edit - and now that I think about it, I don't think Sing left the room because there was nothing more for him to say or because he was upset, but rather to go somewhere quieter to get ready to make the phone call to Mays.

How did you see all of this?? Was their draft room streaming live the whole time??

Taylor Mays was projected as a top 5 or 10 pick in last years draft (if he declared). And now we get him falling to us in the middle of the 2nd??? are you f-ing kidding me? The kid is extremely physically gifted. Has the size and strength of a linebacker, 4.3 speed, and can straight up knock fools out. Sure, his coverage skills were being scrutinized, but he can learn and be coached.

All you Taylor Mays haters on here... tell me which safety on our current roster is an impact player that has the potential to be a starter in this league?

-Goldston emerged as a playmaker last season. We're good at FS.
-Michael Lewis is good against the run, but gets burnt against the pass. Not to mention he is getting older and is one concussion away from retiring.
-Reggie Smith has yet to make a start and is getting pushed further down in the depth chart.
-Curtis Taylor was a 7th round pick that I have only seen on the kickoff team.

Taylor Mays will surpass both Reggie Smith and Curtis Taylor on the depth chart, if not take Michael Lewis's starting SS spot before the 2010 season is over.

I don't understand all this hate for T. Mays. I read some of the previous posts and it's ridiculous. Oh well... I love this pick, and if Coach Sing and Baalke really did not want to draft him, they WOULD NOT HAVE DRAFTED HIM.

Taylor Mays is a 49er now! F**k yeah!
