You're right it does say something.

It says the Redskins are willing to upgrade their quarterback position, while the Niners are just sitting there praying that Alex Smith will somehow magically turn into a competent quarterback.

There could be other factors in the Redskins decision to trade him. Likely a combo of these :

-Perhaps they wanted to get SOMETHING in return for him seeing as he will be an UFA next year.

-Perhaps OC Kyle Shanahan feels good about having Grossman as the backup QB seeing as Grossman was on the Texans with him last year ?
