He has to be unclaimed off of waivers. Once he passes through waivers without being claimed, then I think he can be picked up with a new/smaller contract, IIRC.

But certain vets don't pass through waivers, they just automatically become FA's. Not sure how many years you need for that though.

I say sign him for the minimum, if he'd agree to it. It's not like we have a better back up RB than him.
