Why do people keep talking about impact Dlinemen... no D lineman drafted at 31 would be able to start anywhere other than NT. Austin would make an impact everywhere. He ran 4.3s on what is turning out to be some slow turf in Indy. With the emphasis on special teams this offseason, it wouldnt surprise me if we swapped with the bears if Austin falls to 20.

I'm not sure where you got that. This draft is so deep that some draft watchers think there will be d-linemen taken in the 2nd round who will start right away and make an impact. Greg Cosell recently said the Niners can probably get an impact D lineman to start in the rotation immediately with their third pick. At 31 or 34 they can get Datone Jones, a DE most people think can start right away. Or, they could probably get Margus Hunt with their own later 2nd rounder, a 6'8", 280 lb. DE with a non-stop motor that most people think can step right into almost any rotation. And, there are lots of starting-caliber safeties in that pick range.

But, even though I think they need to work on their defense, I wouldn't be upset or anything if they went for Austin. He's definitely an exciting player and they'd have a return man who could take it to the house at any time from anywhere on the field. The draft is so deep with defense that HarBaalke might feel they can get good defensive value at lower rounds. If that's the case, maybe we will see them trade up past the Vikings to take Austin because if he's there at 23 or 25, he definitely won't get past the Vikings. They just got rid of their malcontent who is basically the same kind of player.

I think we agree, maybe its just a few posters making allot of posts but some seem intent on drafting a DE at 31 to replace Smith even though that player would play very little in his first two years compared to other guys mentioned like Austin who would be on the field all the time for special teams or Eifert (although unlikely he falls) who would play 40-50% of the offensive snaps and be a beast in the redzone.

Yea alot of people are worried more about our defense but they forget our DL additions no starter needed there just depth. FS is probably are real need but 6 FS can start from day 1 as reported. Austin is the most dynamic player is this draft and with our pistol offense he would be dynamic in space and ohh yea a punt return specialist as well!

According to Barrows, the Niners have set up a meeting with Tavon Austin, so maybe some of you will get your wish. I think it's a classic HarBaalke head fake, but we'll see.

Lord my wish is for the 49ers to draft Tavon Austin! Please

Crabs N boldin are 6'1 average not bigg we need 6'3 - 6'4 guys to help push back them giants Seahawks have at CB ...

You don't beat size with size.

If you want someone who will beat Seattle's big DBs, you burn them with speed.

Exactly, you cant press austin if he is lined up as a wing in our diamond formation... good luck to any DB trying to cover him with a free release.
Exactly u beat size and physicality with speed we will move up to get uastin

Say all u want but my thinking hasn't N wont change NO MIDGET WR.....but please keep wasting time typing out whatever u want ...
doesnt that leave us with to many WR?
Reggie Bush and Crabs are the only two other players I REALLY wanted. I want Austin just as bad.
Yea, lets draft a receiver in the 1st that likely wont sniff the field this year save special teams. That way, everyone will have something (else) to b***h about once he's buried on the depth chart behind Crabs, Boldin, and Manningham.

Makes sense to me.
We're gonna trade up for him. I am 75% sure. Especially if they like what they see.

I was really high on Cordarelle Patterson (still am) but after seeing more of Austin I am on the bandwagon....

The thought of Austin with LaMichael James in our Pistol formations makes me drool....

With that said, what do yall think it will take to move up to 16-21? Which is where many people think he'll be selected?

Our First Round Pick (#31 Overall) + Second Round Pick (#34 Overall) doesn't seem to be too harsh...

Manningham won't be full strength until mid-October. Williams just started running yesterday afternoon. Jenkins we still have to wait and see.

We have nobody to play the slot position that allows us to keep the safety occupied.
Last season we had Manningham and Moss play outside with Crabs in the slot and that had mild success but everyone knows Crabs is an outside guy majority of the time... Austin brings immediate impact on special teams and provides us with a dynamic slot receiver that will have success in this pass-happy league. When Manningham works his way back, he'll split a bit of time with Boldin. I really don't see the problem with this especially when you figure the fact that Williams, Manningham and Boldin will be free agents after 2013. If for some crazy reason we don't bring all three back, we still have an outside/inside presence in Crabtree, Austin and possibly Jenkins with cap space to sign a bigger body.
