What do y'all think of Cam Newton?

The way Vick is playing tonight is just like how Cam has been playing all year.

This kid definitely is an intriguing prospect for us especially if we land an offensive HC with strong QB ties. Keep T. Smith. Dump Alex and David while seeing if Nate can pull his head out and work harder than ever to compete for #2.

Bring in the rook and let him learn, play some preseason games and see what he has the next year given that Troy excels landing the permanent gig. The bottom line is that I am excited what Troy brings as a leader which would make him the ideal mentor to both Davis and Newton.

Still, we have a ways to go, but I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out like Josh Freeman and is picked up around the same area.

Luck, Locker, Mallett and Newton would be 1st round candidates. I expect us to pick between 7- 15. It will be either a CB or a QB.

I wouldn't object at all to drafting this kid. He just looks like he has "IT", it jumps off the page!

That (along with the character concerns) will be his biggest hurdles.

And yah, I think he's coming out this year. As much as I like him, though, I'd have to interview him thoroughly and completely to draft him anywhere in the top 10-15. After that, the money isn't so great...you can take a gamble on a kid like this from pick 15+, and if he doesn't pan out, it's really not a huge hit on your payroll.

i really don't understand what he's done that makes people nervous. i understand the criticism that maybe his game won't translate to the NFL--I happen to disagree, but I think its a valid point--but I really don't see how any of the allegations amount to serious questions. Most infractions against the NCAA are overblown. Look at Dez Bryant for the perfect example of someone who breaks an asinine rule of the NCAA and gets branded a "troubled" guy and "head case" and a "risky pick"--and the dude is a lights-out football player and has the biggest heart of any current Cowboy.

Exactly. He left on his own. Look at all these arrests by Florida players and rarely are they kicked off the team. He left for playing time more than anything in my opinion.

At the same time what ghost said is accurate about the fact that you do have to question certain things that weren't an issue a few weeks ago.

Just like Iupati last year, Newton is really starting to grow on me from a pure talent POV. Sure, I love Stanzi's comebacks and moxie, but you just can't deny the loaded talent Newton has. I agree with your assessments of him and would love to see him be groomed as Troy's successor (I think Troy will make a name for himself and we will keep him). Troy would be a great mentor for him.

The only thing is I hate to have a 1st rounder sit for awhile rather than someone like Amukamara or Jenkins who could jump right in as a starter.

I think we should only take Newton if we are completely starting from scratch at QB. We have too many holes elsewhere. That is, in your scenario Troy plays well enough to stick around and be the starter next year: why would we take another 1st round QB if we had a young QB we were comfortable with? The only scenario where I like us taking Newton is if we have no answers at QB on the roster and are willing to start completely over, maybe with some mediocre veteran (who, I don't know) starting the year.

I agree, especially of Troy continues his solid play. IMO, he doesn't have to win out or even play perfectly for me to support him (and want to use our 1st rounder elsewhere). He just has to stay solid for the rest of the year, be the consistent leader he's been so far and keep is in games.

That will allow us to fill the other major holes on this team (specifically CB like tico mentioned, and pass rush) with top talent from next year's draft.

So yes, I'd be willing to pass on a 1st round QB in 2011 (even more so if Luck is gone by the time we pick, and he likely will be) IF Troy continues his solid play. Now, if he ends up being a fluke and plays like JTO or something like that, then you HAVE TO invest in a 1st round QB next year.

Failing that, I'd go with Troy and use the draft to plug other glaring holes.

Just because we have had bad Quarterback play the last six seasons lets just not make Troy Smith in the next great QB after a few games... Cant hurt to have a Chargers situation with Bees and Rivers aka Troy Smith starting and newton as the back up... which is a better situation then having to throw him in right away. We all loved Shawn Hill because he was much better then Smith was... But all Shawn Hill really is, is a good back up QB... nothing wrong wit that... when Matthew Stafford is hurt he has looked good coming in.

Couldn't agree more with both of you. CB and pass rusher are very intriguing in that mid round range 11-21.

Nobody is making Troy into the "next great QB." If a Phillip Rivers-type is available when we pick, we'd have to strongly consider taking a QB regardless of how good Troy does. However, the only guy who comes close to Rivers in the 2011 draft is Andrew Luck, but we will have ZERO shot at him.

Here's the breakdown of scenarios (IMO):

1.) Draft Luck if he's available when you pick, regardless
2.) If Troy falters, use the draft (high pick) or free agency to address QB
3.) If Troy continues his solid play and Luck isn't available, use your high picks to grab BPA (and not just QB). Consider Troy as a good enough, stop-gap QB solution for now while you plug the other major holes. You can then use 2012/2013 to find the QB of the future

I just don't see Locker, Mallett or Stanzi as franchise-type QBs and/or ready to step in any time soon and make a difference...given our other glaring needs (and how high we'll likely be picking), it might make more sense to draft BPA (adding to our overall talent) as opposed to targeting a QB with a high pick and hoping things pan out with questionable prospects at the most critical position on the team.
