What all star catchers would you have signed instead?
Kyle Higashioka, Danny Janson and Carson Kelly were all free agents this past offseason. Not All Star, but at least MLB level players.
They cost money though, and Posey sees Bailey as the starter.
I mean....the original post by XF was about a backup catcher.
Higashioka: 2/$13m
Janson: 1/$8.5
Kelly: 2/$11.5
Thats not outrageous to spend on a backup catcher.
If Posey likes Bailey and thinks he's the everyday guy, especially being a switch hitter, he probably wasn't interested in pay 5-7 million a season for a backup.
Someone pointed out that it was about the time that Bailey ditched the torpedo bat that his hitting started improving, so I think his borderline unplayable bat might have been exaggerated by a dumb bat trend earlier this year.
I still don't see any reason to take an elite defensive C out of the lineup just because he isn't super productive as a hitter. I trust Posey's expertise on the C position, so I'm not going to criticize what he does there.
