Mark me down as someone who doesnt know baseball then.

It was an ignorant take by 99.

Patrick Bailey is having a terrible year even with his defense, per WAR (0.8) he's the 28th best catcher.

I think the obvious solution is to get a hitter+ catcher and have them split the time. Bailey should not be starting majority of the time. He's not that good in his current form. We have seen him much better in years past. They tried to do that with Tom Murphy but he got hurt... so its a glaring need and the glare gets brighter every day.

The reason it doesnt appear like you would ever "bench a gold glove catcher because he doesnt hit" is because very few catchers in MLB history have been allowed to be a starting catcher when they hit as abysmally as Bailey does.

Take a look at Austin Hedges as an example. If Hedges was allowed to be an everyday player, he would make runs at being a gold glover. But because he regularly hits under the Mendoza Line, he is a part time catcher.

So 99 saying "you dont bench a gold glove catcher because he cant hit" might seem accurate to him because you dont see it happen ever, its can easily be explained because great defensive catchers who cant hit a lick never really get the opportunity to be everyday starters.

And Garce, just so we are being totally accurate here....Bailey is 14th in fWAR. fWAR takes into account catcher framing, which majorly boosts his total WAR. But as soon as MLB gets out of the stone ages and starts using automated balls and strikes, Bailey's defensive value will fall off of a cliff.

I am done with Melvin. I get that this team has holes, and has all season, but Melvin has been more of a problem than a solution IMO.

I would like to find a RF and a 2B. The team seems committed to Bailey, and while he isnt my choice for the catcher for the forseeable future, I realize he probably isnt going anywhere. But RF is a glaring hole. Last year people in here flamed me for saying Tyler Fitzgerald probably wasnt the guy for the future, and look how that turned out. Rubs, I am ok with allowing Schmitt to compete for that job, but I believe that much like Fitzgerald, he isnt a long term solution for the position either.

Not sure why, Bailey is pure garbage, been saying it all season, he is holding the team back, at least part of it, should try to find a catcher who can hit

I'm sure they would love to find a catcher like Cal Raleigh that can hit and defend but there aren't a lot of guys like that. Hardly any catchers taken in this year's draft.

I was starting to lessen my stance on Bailey because he has been serviceable at the plate the last month or so. So I was holding out hope that he would turn it around and at least be a .240 hitter. But after striking out looking 3 times yesterday, all that good will he built up over the last month is completely gone.

We dont need a Cal Raleigh. We need an B+ defender and a C+ hitter. An A defender and a D- hitter isnt going to cut it. Those are backup type players.

I wouldn't call him a A defender either, he has whiffed on throws to second this year multiple times

His WAR is down a full point from last year. 0.8.

Go look at FanGraphs. Your numbers are off. 2.1 fWAR this year, which is 12th best among C. Leads baseball by a mile in catcher DRS with 17. Leads baseball in the FanGraphs Fielding metric at C at 25.8.

There have been plenty of passed balls and easy blocks that he hasnt come up with either, but overall his defensive value is excellent so I cant harp on those either.

I addressed this already, but my point stands.
Bob Melvin has lossed the team, best case now is to lose the rest of the games this year and get a top 5 pick , I would give him 1 year more max and fire Burrell

Good points.

Yet his value is heavily suppressed because he can't hit. He should be platooning at the very least.
He's a switch hitting catcher who bats .180 vs LHP

find a RH catcher who mashes lefties and we are good there
lol wtf

I wonder if they ever discuss the concept of making a productive out.

Some of these dudes don't know the basics of base running or the rules of the game. Maybe Melvin should put himself, his coaches, and players though a simple refresher that you would give to middle school baseball players.
