Slash player salaries while going to a 17 game schedule? That'll end well.
it has to be 16 or 18 game schedule

I wish they gave an extra bye week when they increased the schedule to 17 games. That would make it fair and a lot of players would probably love that. It might reduce the risk of injuries as well.
the uneven number would give an extra home game which would be unfair to the visting team and season ticket holders who lose out a home game

If they went to 18, they could possibly get a 2nd bye

Couldn't they alternate years so one year they get the extra home game and the next year they don't? The main issue is an extra week of rest bc player safety is the main issue not so much the competitive advantage of an extra home game for half the teams let's say every other year.
The neutral site sounds like a good compromise to me

They could alternate but likely some teams will get back to back extra road games.. probably be us

the link that thl408 provided had neutral site option, international games

I'm hoping to see some incredible cap implosion by some of these over-the-cap playoff teams. I hope to see ShanaLynch pick up some good nuggets from these ensuing teams cap carcasses.

For the free agents of this class, perhaps we see lots of 1 year deals with the players signing these one year deals hoping to cash in when the cap returns to normal in 2022. I'm referring to the mid level free agents.

Great point Giedi.

That is where gentleman John has done well. He has a great eye for talent and a gift for nailing down guys whose contracts are up but they are stuck due to some teams being way over cap. Imagine Baalke trying to talk to one of those guys and then put JL in his place. No comparison.

This tight cap could actually be a boon for us, altho in a rather strange way. Of course, we ourselves have some decisions to make first.

You can build options into a multi-year deal. A couple of if-then clauses would take care of somebody like Trent Brown. If the cap goes up - you get this, if it goes up even further, you get more... etc... Doesn't have to be a one year deal. Having said that, it looks like one year deals are in vogue right now because of the shrunk cap, like you said.

This is what gives me hope about resigning Williams. Unless a team really feels they're 1 - 3 player (LT) away from a SB, specifically a OT, few teams are going to have the cap space to absorb what Trent is asking despite the going rate. It's going to be a super interesting off-season.

I think superstars like big Trent will still get their money. I'm predicting that it's the mid-tier guys that will get squeezed and find that their contract demands will not be met this coming offseason with the reduced cap. For example, JTartt, he's not a superstar but he's above journeyman/depth status. Guys like him may find that teams won't overspend on them. If they are willing to gamble on themselves they may take a one year deal and test free agency again in 2022.

AB, Do we gain more cap space in 2021 by cutting Rich and Ford after june first ?

Looks like it jumps from 8 to 22 ?

Yes, but the issue is 1. we need the cap room ASAP, no FA will wait to sign their deal until June 2nd, 2. the 49ers wouldn't get the cap room until June 2nd, and 3. if Dee can't pass a physical, they can't cut him and save money. Our best bet is to get Dee & Weston to take significant pay cuts, with incentives added to their deals so they have a chance at making that money back, also eliminate their final year(s) under contract, also if they don't look good in camp, you just cut them then. It's a win-win IMO.
Who is going to pay guys like Jordan Reed, Solomon Thomas, DJ Jones and others who were not in the spotlight and spent the year injuried?

I like that scenario, we're very quick as a zone to try to dump injured players, how many wanted Verrett cut?

I can see a scenario that both return and play well, if that happens we have very few holes and can concentrate on Trent and the secondary.

We'd also be in great shape next year if they don't play well.

I think it's all moot anyway as I doubt they pass their physicals

Jason Verrett was making $1m. Dee Ford has a $20m cap hit in 2021. Literally 20x what Verrett was making lol.

Surely that's worse? There were loads who wanted him cut to make room for a 6th round rookie!
