Brant Boyer ST Coordinator

Some posters have pointed out how it's important to have a DC and ST coordinator work in unison cause they have a ton of overlapping players. Some from offense too but having these guys with a former relationship and clearly shares the same philosophy- might be what we we've sorely lacked.

A lot of casual fans (no one specific, just fans across all fan bases) don't realize how intertwined defense and special teams are, let's hope this becomes the start of something beautiful. Boyer has been a good coordinator in his own right, you have to be good and flexible to survive the jets for that long. lol

Great hire by Kyle & John here, I doubt he was a "must" to get Saleh, I'm sure the whole Coen opting out, then back into the Jags job pissed him off, then the 49ers said they'd make him the highest paid DC, so Money speaks, plus a decent amount of the players he had back in 2020 are still here, Bosa, Warner, Dre(if re-signed), plus we have a lot of younger up & coming defensive players, Green, Brown, Mustapha, Winters, Okyuaninou, Beal, plus the familiarity with the team, and system, looking forward to seeing what Saleh does.

As for Boyer, 9 yrs as Jets ST coordinator, yeah, and he's had a top 5-10 ST unit, if we can get to 16th I'd be happy, our ST sucked so bad, I like Moody, but I'd bring in someone to challenge/push him, he didn't look right post ankle injury, like he never should have came back, way way way too soon, I'm hoping he can turn it around though.

Now we have to see who/if Kyle named Assistant HC since Staley ain't coming back most likely.

Now are they gonna practice kick coverage more than 10 minutes per day?

Kyle really needs to change his mindset on how he sees ST. He just views it as "don't lose the game" but it can be a crazy important weapon too. He's NEVER done any sort of trick play or anything, not intentionally. Lombardi did a video about this and I agree with him. I don't agree with everything he says but I've felt like special teams has long been over due for an overhaul and approach.

You gotta let the boys play. Let them make a play. Give them some life.

I don't care to look it up but I remember something about the 49ers barely practicing special teams plays cause of the rule changes - right there I said we are going to lose games cause of STs, turns out we have a horrible unit. The worst In the league.

Special teams had a -64!!!! On EPA this year. Special teams essentially cost us 64 points, that's insane. Only one team since 2016 has had it worse but most are in the 10 to -10, that's how bad we were.

s**t, I guess I'm wrong. I haven't watched the team much since his rookie season, so I guess I shouldn't be talking. So, he's sucked? I know he struggled this past season, coming off his injury. I thought he was solid for us before then.

You're right before he got injured, I think he was 12 out of 13 but we can't take a chance on him anymore, especially when we have such an easy path to get a bye week.

Id lose my s**t if we wasted another draft pick on a damn kicker. A 7th I could deal with

Schneider was highly regarded when he was in Seattle. It still comes down to who the players are on special teams. They can't use the bottom of the roster and expect top end results.

Honestly, I want better. Schneider had us middle of the pack his first year. Boyer is consistently a top 5/10 guy. That is the expectation. I want us in the upper echelon of special teams units. Hopefully Kyle has embraced this. His approach to special teams are like the coaches of old that thought passing was evil and when you throw, 2 of the outcomes are bad.
