Actually everyone and their mamas thought the 49ers were drafting Lance. Chris Simms, one of Shanahan's closest friends thought he was drafting Darnold. Chris Simms also got the Mike McGlinchey pick right too, no one saw that s**t coming!!!

A lot of the media had Mac Jones pegged as the pick. I remember that much clearly.

Darnold was in the same draft as McGlinchey (2018) so the bolded doesn't add up, haha.

Anyways, I still think Rapoport is talking out of his ass.

It's been 2, this is his 3rd season and it would still be bad to lose to a guy who's been on multiple teams over the same period.

After Mac Jones' rookie season, Kyle was being interviewed by Brandon Marshall and said he was considering drafting Mac Jones. The video is on YouTube. So perhaps Rapoport had a legit source.

and there's articles about Kyle really liking Fields .. 49ers do their due diligence on every player. Don't get wrapped up in it

I remember the press conference after Trey Lance was drafted, both Kyle and John was saying Trey was the guy all along and they had no clue why the press was bringing up Mac Jones.

But from that interview with Brandon Marshall, it seemed Kyle had serious interest in Mac Jones. And it was ultimately between Mac and Trey.

Putting aside that this is the Darnold thread, the subject of Jones has been done to death and the claim that Shanahan had any more than a moderate interest in him, particularly after the trade, is highly unlikely. There is a Jones thread in NFL Talk in which the whole matter was exhausted. So let's not do it again.
