The 49ers this season have displayed many layers to their run game. More than they have in previous years. Here the 49ers use a midline option to create a gigantic running lane right in the middle of the DL. It's basically a zone read play but the read defender is a DT, not a DE like in the zone read we've seen in the past 49er offenses. 49ers couple this with outside zone.
The 3t is the read defender.

3t is unblocked and stunned. The orbit motion from Pettis ensures that red will not be factoring into this play as he plays contain.

The red DE pulled one way, the 3t paralyzed, the rest of the DL flowing with outside zone all create a large running lane up the middle. Coleman presses into the back of Tomlinson to help Tomlinson sustain the block on Kuechly.

Here's what I love about this play. Presnap Carolina has 7 vs 5......Jet Sweep orbit motion takes 1 away, line flow takes 4 away, The red End is singled up and at the moment of truth its Coleman on a DT in open space. It's beautiful.

It's like a drug deal gone bad for a bunch of guys from Carolina. Flew cross country, thought they could get good s**t on the cheap, but ended up with no smoke, left on the street with no money by the Pretenders

any idea why we missed that throw to Sanders on I think (it was either a deep out or corner on the left side of the field) from Jimmy? Sanders ran a GREAT route but Jimmy look like he just missed him . whether it be just chemistry or what

Jimmy was pressured and got hit on the play. It could go either way. After the play Sanders was headed back to the huddle pointing at himself, looked like he was asking if he ran his route wrong
I love what you and JohnnyDel bring to the 'Zone. Thanks for giving us insight on what a brilliant mind, Shanny, is scheming.

This is art!

thanks for getting back to me on that. that and the INT were the only things I really wanted to see why they failed.

we've seen plenty of footage of what the offense does well at or excels at. I want to see more of an emphasis on things the Niners did wrong or failed at
Fantastic breakdown and analysis, as always!

It would be interesting to see how many plays there are that we missed. A high amount of misses could mean we lose vs better teams.

2Q 1st & 10, +12

It turned out to be Kuechly bobblehead night as well as Kittle

The safeties haven't been tested on deep balls often this season. Some of that is because the pass rush doesn't allow for that as offenses look to get the ball out of the QB's hands quicker, not calling plays that dial up deep shots. Norv Turner runs an Air Coryell offense which looks to push the ball downfield, and he tried the 49ers defense a couple times this game allowing us to see how the safeties reacted to deep balls. Here are two plays where each of Ward and Tartt get tested.
2Q 1st & 10
CAR dials up a three level flood. This is a typical way to bust Cover3. Ward is the middle deep safety, four underneath zones are marked. The 49ers, like most teams, will shade their middle safety to the wide side of the field, the side with more area to cover.

Allen takes his drop and looks to his left. Ward doesn't cheat over.

Allen mid throwing motion and Ward starts to turn and run. Usually, the weakside Hook defender has to keep his head on a swivel and look for any deep crossers (yellow). Kwon does not do this and the yellow route is open. But Allen is looking to take a deep shot here.

Ward realizes he's taken too shallow of an angle and has to adjust while the ball is already mid air. Ward will not be able to recover to contest this Post route.

Fortunately, the pass is not on target, but if it was, Ward is out of position to challenge the throw because of the initial angle he took and him being late to adjust.

this is what I'm talking about. I think our pass defense could be in for a rude-awakening next month, at least more than what we're used to seeing. Brees, Rodgers are going to put up points.

3Q 3rd & 10
CAR dials up the same route combination, this time Tartt is the deep safety. Same things are happening, Cover3, Tartt shades to the wide side of the field and the passing strength of CAR's formation.

Tartt is reading the QB's eyes and starts to move over to the other side of the field.

Weakside hook defender is Ward and he does not see the deep crosser from yellow. That's twice the weakside hook defender failed to match the deep crosser. Luckily, Allen is in YOLO mode and goes deep, again bypassing the open yellow deep crosser. Allen has yet to start his throwing motion but Tartt is already quickly moving over to cover the deep Post.

Tartt takes too shallow of an angle but quickly adjusts...

in time to be in position where had the ball been on target, Tartt would have been able to contest the throw. I don't think too highly of Tartt in open space but here he plays this very well showing good recovery speed.

------
Just so that both plays are on the same page, here's the Ward play again from the previous page. For comparison of the angles taken by the two safeties.

In a blowout win like this, there are very few misses. There's a bunch of short runs, but Kyle has already said he's ok with only getting 2 yards on those runs because it sets up all the chunk plays.

Allen had time to hit the crossing route on both of these. Why not do that ...

A little late to the party but here's the start. First defensive series of the game, IMO, set the tone.

Because we were in his head.
