Hat tip to Kocurek. Relatively speaking, I think this was the least talented group he's had since he got here, and they still produced. This offseason is going to be huge for Drake Jackson. He needs to hit the weights and work on his hands.
Also, the 49ers need to find a nose/IDL this offseason. Javon Kinlaw f**king sucks. We really missed DJ Jones this year. Hopefully, they can find someone that's over 300 lbs with some explosiveness that can reset the line of scrimmage, eat/defeat doubles and put a little pressure from time to time when they get a pass rush opportunity.
Agreed. When I look at the Eagles defense and wonder how they got to the point of having 4 double digit sack guys, I look back at our 2019 D-line and realize we had a similar thing cooking had they stayed together. AA was a 10 sack guy. Buckner has been in the past and would've easily been more than once from 2020 to 2022 with those guys next to him. Dee Ford, if healthy, would've put up 10 sacks more than once from 2019 to 2022 with his pass rush win rate, and on limited snaps at that. And Bosa is Bosa. This really isn't a, we shoulda kept this person post, or knock against the front office, but more of a how did Philadelphia get there and how did it go down for us.
When I look at the Eagles, it was a perfect storm. First off, they signed a guy who you knew could be a dominant pass rusher and was played badly out of position in Arizona (Hassan Reddick). Then you have a guy that is extremely underpaid and outperforming his contract (Josh Sweat). Fletcher Cox has long been a top 5/10 DT and Brandon Graham, while he hasn't put up great sack numbers, he always was one of the best with his pass rush win rate. It really was a perfect storm.
To get back to that level, we aren't as far as it may seem because we have the most important piece- the game wrecker. We also have a guy that can dominate, even if it doesn't show up in the stat sheet AA. To get back there, a lot of this is going to be contingent on Drake Jackson taking the next step. It's encouraging that it was him wearing down at the end due to the long season (something that can be worked out) and not loss of confidence in his abilities or some other kind of setback that led to him being deactivated. He can work on that conditioning as well as hit the weight room in the offseason, and of course, work on being a better pass rusher. We also are going to need that dominant run stuffing presence and a player that can also rush from the DT position. I'm hoping we can find another Arden Key like sighting- someone that has been underused, misused, and/or badly coached around the league that we can sign and develop, similar to Key or Ebukam.
One guy that comes to mind is Clelin Ferrell. He was overdrafted, but a webzone favorite at the time of the draft and was thought of as a consolation prize if Bosa wasn't available. The report on him then was he wins his rushes, but can't finish- not enough bend or speed. Is this a guy that we could sign to a 2-year deal and put him in that Arden Key role, exclusively a 3rd down rusher? His value also has to be pretty low right now and if any coach can get anything out of his talent, it has to be Coach K.
We would be well served looking for 2 or 3 veterans that fit that mold and get them signed to some team friendly contracts, to protect us whether they don't work out or break out. With 11 picks, but limited cap space, we will have to be strategic. As far as our own vets are concerned, resigning Jordan Willis is a definite to me. Good solid rotational player that will likely be good for 3 to 5 sacks a year and then Charles Omenihu is my other. He can play inside or outside and seems like a guy that can explode with a little more talent around him, making him into a potentially dominant role player.
I'm really hoping we can find those three missing pieces- dominant run stuffer, second edge rusher opposite Bosa (8 sack guy), and great rusher from the interior. I think that will restore the luster of the D-line and give us a group that can dominant in stopping the run man for man as well as rushing the passer.
