You either commit to running the scheme that Shanahan wants or you commit to Brown, fire Shanahan and bring in someone who will run more of a straight up gap blocking scheme.

I thought Nolan credited Baalke for the stars of Nolan's reign, in particular Patrick and Gore.

I've said repeatedly and it has been ignored, that Nolan in a KNBR interview a year ago when rumors of Baalke's impending firing were picking up steam, said that McCloughan was "away" from the team and it was kept quiet during the 2008 draft preparation. It was Trent largely who ran the draft preparation and set the draft board while Scot was in rehab. Given his philosophy and who they drafted, it makes sense.

If he was doing such a great job why was he fired? What has he done since, personnel wise?

The lesson learned by all of this is that being a GM is hard as s**t and that success is mostly found when working as part of a larger team. The second one of these asshats gets full control, the bottom drops out and fail at an epic proportion.
