Tanking?

Of course you don't tank on purpose. And it's too early in the year to be upset when the team wins games. The organization and coaching staff would be foolish however to play it like Jimmy was still healthy. As draftology said, a wise coach would say to himself, we're 1-2 and just lost our franchise QB. And therefore if CJ comes out and plays well and we're 4-4 or better at the half way point, then you do all the little things you can to win now, like bringing back injured guys immediately when they're healthy enough, etc. You would never just outright lose on purpose with whoever is out there playing, but if we're 2-6 and look bad in the process, you are just bull headed and dumb to not play some of the younger guys when veterans are dinged etc. When you do this with an already struggling team, you can still "compete" and "tank" at the same time.

And despite what others have said about the draft and it being unpredictable, yeah, of course you can't be sure that Bosa or whoever will be great at the pro level. But what you can be absolutely certain of is that a very high pick is an extremely valuable piece to trade if there isn't a blue chip prospect at a position of need when your pick comes up. We need an edge rusher in the worst way, and I can guarantee that the # 1 pick in the draft would have been more than enough to get Mack from the Raiders. Now you're talking about as sure of a thing as you can get, a young FA stud at a high value position of need, and all you have to give up is resting a few vets like Staley or Sherman late in the year when nobody is 100% anyway. When you think of it in these terms, I don't see how everyone wouldn't want to subtly and sensibly "tank", especially once we're eliminated from the playoffs. I'm sorry, but you aren't a "real fan" for being happier about a 5-11 season where your team nets let's say the # 8 pick, versus a 3-13 season where you end up with the # 1 pick. Trading down has netted huge dividends for too many teams over the years to oversimplify this and say the draft is a crap shoot. It's a great thing to have a high draft pick whether you use it or not.

They're not meaningless to this young group (even for the staff). Every snap is important (learning experience) and you know winning breeds confidence. They'll lose some close ones, and more than likely, lose big in some games, but they'll learn from it. If they happen to win some of those close ones, it'll be good for them (the spirit)

We have 3 losses and no defense . Would have to run the table for a shot at the playoffs. This season is over...Blow for Bosa time. Will be easy with Saleh running the d.

When you are building a young team, the last thing you do is to even hint that you are willing to accept less than a win.

This team is still capable of winning 6+ games. To get Bosa they would have to lose all remaining games. That is NOT going to happen.

We aren't winning more than 3 games. We get a new major injury each week and the D is getting worse.

We can beat maybe Arizona and Oakland. That's 4 wins at best. We might not even have a team to field in December.

We won't tank on purpose, but with all of these injuries a losing season will likely come organically. When/if it does the silver lining is that a bad record gets us closer to an edge rusher (or two) that we sorely need. Let us hope that Jimmy G can come back from the injury.

If they announce an open tryout we need some of the younger guys on here to jump at it. At 45 I'd be a poor man's Trent Taylor.

Beat Oakland? They just beat the Brown's we have no chance!!

Fire up the tank!! Players are dropping like flies every week, I only see maybe 2-3 more wins on the schedule at best so it's a lost season anyway. I'm all for more competitive losses like today. Competing for a meaningless win in a lost year is how you miss out on the Myles Garrett's and have to get stuck settling for the Solomon Thomases.
