Several personnel mistakes made this off season in my opinion. Eric Reid should have been brought back for 1 year and 5 million. Not sure he isn't better then what we already have plus would've added depth to the LB position. Jimmie Ward should've been sent packing. Ward is never healthy and is a big waste of 8 million+. Niners should've added another good CB to the back end of this defense to go with Sherman and Witherspoon. After Witherspoon and Sherman the rest of the outside CB's absolutely blow. I guess what they're are trying to do is let the young guys grow in year 2 and see what holes we have. The problem I see is that we have several players who can't stay healthy and the players behind them are a big drop off.

Ever think Reid didn't want another 1 yr deal? He's also not gonna play LBer when he's a safety (didn't want to play LBer last yr). Can't assume he would come back for that.

Ward's 5th yr option was applied last yr, at that pt they didn't know what that has at FS and he was the starter. It's easy to say woulda shoulda a yr later.

They can still bring in a backup CB after teams cut down to the final roster. Williams imo is more than fine at CB, Reed in only a short amount of time has proven he belongs on the roster, and Moore has looked better as the off seasons goes.

We need better sub package rushers, which don't grow on trees either.

People are putting entirely too much stock into preseason games. I'm just glad we made it relatively unscathed as far as major injuries go.

How do I know if Reid would've taken a 1 year deal? Because Reid said he would come back on a 1 year deal for what he made last year.

that is totally legit. thank god for alfred

Yup. Sucks we had to pull a guy off the street to take over the core.
Everybody is kind of tripin. We won 2 games 2 seasons ago. Lots of house cleaning to do. Some people set the bar way too high for a year 2 rebuild. Just enjoy being somewhat competitive. I'm looking forward to not starting 0-10 and not getting blown out every week. Right now, nothing, absolutely nothing concerns me. Lynch will get those edge rushers, but he needs more than 2 drafts to do it. Sometimes those impact guys just aren't available. Our secondary and dline are extremely young. If we had the type of talent the Rams do and some of this was happening, I'd be concerned.
/SanFranFanfrmVa. ...that is the whole problem .personnel .judgement is just like baalke it stinks .we are still in the predicament from last year.no pass rush and now no rb.jimmy was a good pick .and we got lucky for it ..lynch is over his head ...
We have holes, but it's not concerning because we're not going to win the super bowl anyways. Would be a major accomplishment if we made the playoffs.

They did offer him a 1 yr deal and he said no

You're not paying a guy to be a backup $5.7 million (which is what he got) if you have a choice. Tartt is only making $3 million this yr lol.

Look on the bright side. We don't have A Davis and A Brooks anymore who contributed to false starts and offsides like clockwork every game.

We are paying over $8 mill for a backup right now
....lol
It's all good though. It's not my money and they made these decisions with Ward and AA so hopefully one of them works out

Exactly

I'm not saying I'm totally sold on Saleh as a DC. But it's pretty clear to me that our issues are the result of ignoring obvious flaws in the offseason.

We had huge needs at LEO, SAM and starting CB. The first two we ignored almost completely which was baffling. And CB we gambled on Sherman which is fine, but failed to bring in any viable plan B. I was for the Sherman signing but it seemed obvious to me that have to couple that move with another depth FA signing.

And I agree, Reid did way more for this team than Ward ever did. I get it that Ward is a more versatile player, but I don't think he's a better player. I would much rather have kept Reid and signed another vet CB.

9ers needed to commit higher draft capital to LEO and probably CB. Or make some bigger signings. Those are premium positions and you can't expect to fill them with late picks and discount FAs.
It's concerning you guys over reacting to a pre-season game!

True but still blows my mind they didn't use a draft pick on someone with more upside than Morris.

I'm excited to see what McKinnon can do on this team, but I just cannot imagine him being successful with a complimentary back also getting a lot of touches.

But I'm still grumpy af that they traded away the Kamara pick last year and then spent two offseasons trying convince themselves Joe Williams can play in this league. All they had to do was draft kamara last year and then draft a bigger back this year and we'd be set up, and have very little money committed to the position.

One more time for those who weren't concentrating. 3rd pre-season. 2nd year of rebuild.

* Blown coverages in the defense
* Miscommunications in the secondary (Tartt)
* Consistent run game
* Crucial penalties in the RZ (repeat pattern from last year)
* Dumb penalties (repeat pattern from last year)
* RZ efficiency (TD's not FG's)
* Defending the seam pass/QB scrambling

I think that sums up most of the issues pretty well. The details behind each bullet point are probably interesting. Would you be willing to take each bullet point and expand out who seems to be most responsible for the team being too subpar in that area? Is it lack of talent in a certain position group or is it that the players or coaches aren't using their talent to its full potential to create better execution on the field? Do you have any recommendations how on to rectify each of these concerns? Is that too many questions?

Honestly Richard Sherman was a bigger presence on the sideline than Saleh. He was up and down the sideline coaching the guys during the game. Sometimes out onto the field

Saleh was probably on the head set talking to his staff and counting on the position coaches to coach their position--that's what he is supposed to do.
