As it stands, that would be my predicted roster as well. I'd like to fit in Colbert some where, as we seem thin at cb, safety, and ST coverage, and as a runner and hitter who played secondary in college, can maybe be active on game days. I don't, however, see anyone I'd give up for him.

Yeah and keep your eye on SS Chanceller James.

I'd like to see Adrian Colbert return a few kicks. And violently run down and tackle a few kick returners.

Was he a beast at The U on KRs?
Im intrigued cause if he emerges some he might be able to back up at CB/S along with ST value.

Agree with Smoke. I think Colbert has a shot to make the team, mainly because of ST. And having experience at safety is a plus, when it seems like they cannot keep any of them healthy.

Pads on? Time for some updates...

I still have a hard time seeing them keeping 6 WRs and all being active on game days.

Also surprised you have Hightower making it now. I still see Coyle and Jones making the roster, same for Paulsen.
So my prediction based on the first camp reports, not counding on any trades

QB: Brian Hoyer; C.J. Beathard
By all reports, Beathard is not hopeless. I think the coaches will go with two QBs, with Mullens on the PS.
RB: Carlos Hyde; Tim Hightower, Joe Williams, Matt Breida
FB/TE:: Kyle Juszczyk, George Kittle, Vance MacDonald, Garrett Celek
Paulsen is just an insurance if Baalke's guys cannot figure out blocking. Hikutini makes it if he can block
WR: Pierre Garçon, Marquise Goodwin, Jeremy Kerley, Aldrick Robinson, Trent Taylor, Smelter/Bourne

Based on camp report highlights, the #6 WR spot is up for grabs between Smelter and Bourne, unless Murphy's presence as veteran is necessary
LOT: Joe Staley, Jon Theus

LG: Joshua Garnett; Zane Beadles
C: Jeremy Zuttah; Daniel Kilgore
RG: Brandon Fusco
ROT: Trenton Brown; Gary Gilliam
Theus is the 2nd-team LT, I think the team will keep him for another year

Defensive Personnel: --- 25
DT: *Earl Mitchell, Solomon Thomas, D.J. Jones, C. J. Jones
DE: DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine, Elvis Dumervil, Aaron Lynch
Blair is not making the cut, the Joneses do. The versatile backup DT role goes to CJ instead of Dial.
SAM: Ahmad Brooks, Eli Harold
MIKE: Navarro Bowman; Ray-Ray Armstrong
WILL: Malcolm Smith; Reuben Foster
The current 1st and 2nd-team LBs make it
RCB: Dontae Johnson; Ahkello Witherspoon
S/CB: Redmond/Williams
LCB: Rashard Robinson, Keith Reaser

FS: Jimmie Ward; Lorenzo Jerome, Chancellor James
SS: Eric Reid; Jaquiski Tartt
With our fragile safety corps, James gets on the roster. Reaser makes it as servicable outside corner. The last CB spot is goes to the winner of the Redmond/Williams battle.

Special Teams: Kyle Nelson, Robbie Gould, Bradley Pinion
PR: Trent Taylor; Jeremy Kerley
KR: Jeremy Kerley, Matt Breida

I don't think Smith starts ahead of Foster.

Yeah, that was a bit of a turn for me. Hightower has really impressed in camp since the pads have come on.

In almost all position groups we're seeing a theme: veteran+youth.

I originally had Bibbs over Hightower because of return abilities. But, that now goes to Bolden, the 6th WR who's been impressive thus far and should end up the returner along with Trent Taylor. I like the versatility of the OL and saw Barnes get put on his ass by a rookie so I'm going with 8 instead of 9.

I still believe there are plenty of players with ST experience to justify moving on from Coyle and Jones. I don't see value with them as real position players and ST aces. It seems like the coaches really want both in players as well as the versatility to play two actual positions.

Paulsen is cheap to cut at only $125K and adds nothing in the passing game. While
reports have been quiet, per Kevin Jones, Vance has solidified his spot (passing game + blocking). I think we go with Kittle, McDonald and Hikutini (veteran+youth theme).

Don't count Vance McDonald out of the tight end competition. He's looked mostly solid to begin camp. Out of all the holdovers at the position — Garrett Celek and Blake Bell — McDonald's having the best camp.

Yeah, I've been thinking of keeping just Hoyer and Beathard as well. That would be nice to open up another roster spot.

Maybe not. They may ease him in as the nickel and then work him in as a starter later. I wouldn't be surprised if he's competing with Bowman as much as he is with Smith.

We won't have Bolden as #6 WR, he has the exact same skillset and body type we have in Kerley and Taylor (5'9" or smaller, 4.6s 40yard, 6.7s 3-cone), while the team only has a single non-midget receiver projected to make the roster (taller that 5'10" or listed heavier than 190lbs). We don't have anyone besides Garcon who could contest catches or pretend to run-block.

That's why one of Smelter/Bourne/Burbridge/Murphy should make the roster. Return specialist we already have two (Kerley and Taylor).

Yes, that's very possible.

I hear you on that one...size is lacking outside and really, we just have one in Smelter and height in Patrick (new). Our size will have to come from the TE's this year unless Smelter can earn a 6th.

Keep in mind too that Kyle will move guys around to create tells and mismatches. For instance, Goodwin is learning the slot as well as outside. So it's possible we keep 6 small receivers.

The last thing Kyle wants to do is get Kerley injured at the slot, hence why Taylor noted that's going to be key for him making this team. The other could be a battle between Bibbs and Bolden as returners.

Either way, I go back and forth myself on this one and get your stance. It will be an interesting development to watch!

I can't see them keeping only 2 QBs, they will keep 3, either Barkley is the #2, or they add a vet who gets cut as the #2 QB. No way Kyle goes with a rookie as his #2 QB.

Also Williams is a lock IMO, he is going to be the Slot CB. I'd rather cut Johnson or reaser before Redmond.

Bolden brings something to the kick return game that Kerley and Taylor -- or anyone else on the team, except maybe Breida -- cannot match, and that is pure speed coupled with great vision and elusiveness. Every now and then Bolden is likely to take it to the house.

Kerley and Taylor are better suited for returning punts.
[ Edited by 49erThrowback on Aug 4, 2017 at 7:51 AM ]
I think Bolden and Taylor are both going to make the team. A couple of the media guys think Taylor has already surpassed Kerley on the depth chart, and Bolden doesn't stop making plays. Also, everything I've read describes Kyle using Cole Hikutini(6'5", 230 lbs) as a WR/TE hybrid. He's the solution to the missing height and size in the munchkin WR group.
