I agree the nature of Kelly's offense will inflate the numbers given up on D to a degree, but the 49ers were dead last in points allowed and yards allowed. They gave up the most yards per play, and were one of the worst NFL run defenses in history. That defense was just plain bad. There's a number of reasons why that was the case including coaching and injuries, but the lack of playmaking talent was a big part of it.

I'd rather have ASmith back.

34 year old Alex Smith back over Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster? I don't get it.
Old man Alex smith, come on man.

I expect to see some offense in the coming rounds, however, I have more confidence than some in the guys we picked up in FA. Those guys, along with a coach that can scheme mediocre players into decent talent, will make the offense average at least. We discussed Hoyer ad nauseum in the QB thread, but let's just remember he had four very good games with Chicago before injury. The guy is not chopped liver.

Good point. Free Agency was mostly devoted to improving the offense, so I figured the draft would be more slanted toward improving the defense.. None of the offensive guys we signed are elite players or anything, Garcon clearly being the best of the bunch, but they fit what Shanahan wants to do and he will scheme up some success on that side of the ball. Defense needed a serious infusion of toughness and speed. They got that with Thomas and Foster.

Well, we got an elite fullback. Probably the best FB in the NFL. Garcon is also good. Not elite but really really good.

I would've loved McCaffrey in this offense. My dream draft was somehow moving back to get Corey Davis AND McCaffrey but that's Madden s**t. (lol'z)

I really REALLY hope next years draft produces a great QB/WR group. If so we're set.

I hear ya. McCaffrey or Davis would have been awesome, but we can't fix everything in one off-season. Rebuilding this team is a huge project that will need a couple off-seasons at least. So far its off to a good start. They haven't forgotten about the offense, just playing the draft board and adding talent wherever needed. Just keep building on the talent base and we'll see significant improvement.

It's off to a GREAT start. This was a dream draft for defense. Couldn't have done any better IMO.

Mostly because coaching doesn't matter. Having a better HC who knows offense can't possible make a difference. Kelly knows offense but he needed major changes to personnel to make it work and they couldn't/wouldn't give him the time. Shanahan and Lynch have years for a makeover and there is no reason to reach for specific positions. If they go 0-16 next season they will be in line to draft the best QB in the class, so I don't really care in the short term other than adding good pieces and installing a really good offense and defense.

Someone in the media compared Thomas to B Young. That may be a stretch but if he has that type of talent I'll be happy. Foster was the #1 rated ILB so he should make a difference in the near future as well. What the heck are people so het up about! OK...I know...fandom!

Kizer never has looked like a 1st or even 2nd rounder to me. 3rd round guy at best who needs a ton of development. Not saying he can't have success one day, he's just not Pro Ready whatsoever.

Agree, but quite a few football guys I respect like him and believe he could be the top QB down the road. Lynch said he blew them away and he's only 21, so...

I'm on board with him sitting a year. If we are able to get one of the top guys next year, great. If not, at least we leveraged ourselves with a guy who has a high ceiling and a good QB-centric coaching staff.

Good for him!
Unfortunately I don't see Peterman making it to the 3rd

I think we go with a RB if we pick offense day two. Shanahan will want to take pressure off Hoyer and will want to recreate the RB combo he had in Atlanta.

They could get crazy and move into the second for Kizer but I hope not. I think RB or CB will be the next pick. Our TE group could be bolstered via free agency. If at all. Barnidge makes sense.

If we move back into the second I see us going after a pass catching RB. A guy like Alvin Kamara. Or we could get a bruiser like Mixon. Lynch doesn't seem to be afraid of players with some baggage but Mixon may be too much.

If we can land Cook that would be great but it would cost too much to move up that high. I see us taking Kamara or the best available CB.

Reported we're looking for a TE tonight...we'll see a ton of good prospects. I'm on the hunt bandwagon. Like kamara but he's gonna go high imo

I'd keep an eye on these names . We're 2/2 for drafting guys we had a pre-draftvisit with. These are the guys that we visited with that could be there at 66/67:

51 Ahkello Witherspoon CB
66 Dion Dawkins G
69 Dan Feeney G
70 Julie'n Davenport OT
72 Tim Williams Edge
77 Kareem Hunt RB
78 Carlos Henderson WR
87 Teez Tabor CB
88 Nathan Peterman QB

My man!
