They could get crazy and move into the second for Kizer but I hope not. I think RB or CB will be the next pick. Our TE group could be bolstered via free agency. If at all. Barnidge makes sense.

If we move back into the second I see us going after a pass catching RB. A guy like Alvin Kamara. Or we could get a bruiser like Mixon. Lynch doesn't seem to be afraid of players with some baggage but Mixon may be too much.

If we can land Cook that would be great but it would cost too much to move up that high. I see us taking Kamara or the best available CB.

Reported we're looking for a TE tonight...we'll see a ton of good prospects. I'm on the hunt bandwagon. Like kamara but he's gonna go high imo

I'd keep an eye on these names . We're 2/2 for drafting guys we had a pre-draftvisit with. These are the guys that we visited with that could be there at 66/67:

51 Ahkello Witherspoon CB
66 Dion Dawkins G
69 Dan Feeney G
70 Julie'n Davenport OT
72 Tim Williams Edge
77 Kareem Hunt RB
78 Carlos Henderson WR
87 Teez Tabor CB
88 Nathan Peterman QB

My man!

Great post!

So funny to laugh and make fun of Chicago without knowing how things will turn out. Easy I guess. If Trubisky turns out to be a Brady level QB they will look back at this trade and wonder how the 9ers didn't see it. If he is a dud then the niners were brilliant. At this point we can't possibly know! But...what the heck, it's fun to be a fan of the team everyone is complementing! Go niners!

Of course there is the scenario where Trubisky turns out to be a franchise guy and Thomas becomes the next Bryant Young.
I believe the press conference is in 1 hr to introduce both Thomas and Froster.

We discussed Hoyer ad nauseum in the QB thread, but let's just remember he had four very good games with Chicago before injury. The guy is not chopped liver.

Good point. Free Agency was mostly devoted to improving the offense, so I figured the draft would be more slanted toward improving the defense.. None of the offensive guys we signed are elite players or anything, Garcon clearly being the best of the bunch, but they fit what Shanahan wants to do and he will scheme up some success on that side of the ball. Defense needed a serious infusion of toughness and speed. They got that with Thomas and Foster.
Toughness especially. There were times when it looked like defenders were trying to avoid contact rather than make contact. Both of these guys, along with a healthy Bowman and a more experienced Buckner will set a new tone. It they don't, look for Lynch to "lace 'em up" and come down on the practice field.

Just looking at some of Lynch's vintage game film will set a tone. Bells were ringing...

Sorry not buying it. Makeup on a pig..........

I'd rather have ASmith back.

You are entitled to your opinion.

I do have to ask you though, who would you have brought in FA?

The defense suffered at the hands of Chip Kelly last year. It seemed clear that his scheme would make the defensive stats look terrible as it did in Philly.

Partial agreement.

There were times when the defense was well rested that opposing teams just marched up and down the field like the we were a HS team. The DL was getting blown off the LOS and Bellore and friends were getting buried.

Well, we got an elite fullback. Probably the best FB in the NFL. Garcon is also good. Not elite but really really good.

I would've loved McCaffrey in this offense. My dream draft was somehow moving back to get Corey Davis AND McCaffrey but that's Madden s**t. (lol'z)

I really REALLY hope next years draft produces a great QB/WR group. If so we're set.

I hear ya. McCaffrey or Davis would have been awesome, but we can't fix everything in one off-season. Rebuilding this team is a huge project that will need a couple off-seasons at least. So far its off to a good start. They haven't forgotten about the offense, just playing the draft board and adding talent wherever needed. Just keep building on the talent base and we'll see significant improvement.

The best offensive talent in the world will be wasted if the defense can't stop opponents and get the ball back.

Injuries contributed in a big way but lack of talent was at the center of it.
Shanahan: "You want to prioritize the quarterback position, but if there is nobody there that jumps out at you, and there is a pass rusher (CHECK), a linebacker (CHECK), or an offensive lineman that will help you win for the next ten years, you don't gamble.(CHECK).
Three of four statements confirmed by the close of the first round.

Lynch: "Our franchise quarterback situation may not be fully resolved until next year". (CHECK)
The promise is not until future years, but Next year.

Shanahan has been as effusive with his praise of Kirk Cousins as he could possibly be without bringing the league down on him for tampering, and probably taking away draft picks.

Kirk Cousins as gone public that the only team he will sign a long term contract with is the 49ers. Is there any chance he would say that if he didn't Know he was wanted? No.

The opportunity to have a top, proven NFL quarterback under 30 come to you without compensation is a once in a couple generations opportunity at best. Their intent is clear. To not take advantage of it would be Stupid, and I don't see stupid in these two guys.

Taking any quarterback out of college, and especially out of the spread offense most run, and putting them into the complex under center offense that Kyle runs, against the speed, talent, and weakness targeting NFL coaches, is always going to be a projection. You can improve the odds with analysis, but you just can't know how far they will progress. Therefore, the best plan is to start off with a proven top free veteran, giving you a chance to be competitive out of the gate, and that will give you time to train his back up and successor underneath him, and give you a chance to discard him and start over inexpensively if the aptitude is not there.

Is our course clear Yet?

Next year's draft will likely be more offense heavy if for no other reason than the system will be in place and the vets on the team will be in sync with it. Bringing a high profile rookie on to the team this year would mean that there wouldn't be as many confident vets there to teach him the system. Next year a highly drafted rookie on offense in a skill position will have a better chance to lean on the guys around him rather than just the coaches.
Love what Lynch did last night. One amazing trade (Bears fleecing), one good trade (with the Seahawks), one great safe pick (Thomas) and one great, high risk pick (the Froster). Even though the rest of the league went a little overboard early on the offensive side of the ball, this is still a defensive heavy talent pool. Can't wait to see what he and the front office do today. Apparently, Lynch isn't afraid to make a move, so maybe we won't have to wait till the early 3rd round to add to the roster. Keep it going, J Lynch!

Maybe I'm getting more stupid by the day but can Niner fans explain why they think losing a handful of 3rd round picks to move up 1 spot and take the QB they want was such a bad move for Chicago? Are people really forgetting what the Lambs gave up for Jared Goff??? What the Eagles gave up for Wentz??? Both teams gave up multiple picks and actual first rounders. Who gives a crap about 2 3rd round picks if you're Chicago.

Its not if he works out.
lol that is what they are expecting...
Thomas and Foster say they already feel like brothers.

Developing that chemistry early. I like it.

I agree. The defense was flat out getting pushed around far too often and the first order of business was to change that dynamic. Yesterdays selections of Thomas and Foster go a really long way to addressing the toughness or "attitude" problem the 49ers defense had. Thomas gives you a relentless motor on every play and the ability to generate a pass rush up the middle. Foster gives you the sideline speed and an authoritative presence roaming around behind the line.

Harbaugh's defenses were nasty. Let's bring some of the nasty back.

A couple of things missing on offense are a big-bodied receiver (TE or WR) and a complementary back to Hyde that works well in a zone-style scheme, is quick, and can catch out of the backfield.
