They still save $20 million they have the 5th most cap space in the nfl and instead of losing Jimmy for nothing and just getting back cap space they still have the opportunity to either trade him or have the best back up in the league and maybe get a comp pick for him at the end of the year.

I think it's more than a Jimmy and lance move.

It's a potential job saving move. For both shanny and lynch.

If lance busts one and or both of them are gone. You cannot spend that much and hitch your horse to lance and have him bust.

However, if he busts and they put Jimmy in and still make the playoffs I think they both keep their jobs.

It's savvy for them if for whatever reason lance doesn't work out. I'm just surprised Jimmy went along with it.

What choice did he have, really? He might have been offered a contract by a garbage franchise, but not much more at this stage.. I suppose he could have been a starter for Seattle, but…. He bollixed the situation up by getting the operation, which appeared to blindside the team and didn't give other teams the chance to assess him post op. Staying with us for a year is probably his best option.

Agree 💯%!
This regime gets too attached to their own players who've been in the system. It's like an uphill battle for most newcomers.

I think It's more about them preferring players with experience, which can be good and bad depending on how you look at It
Most stacked 49ers roster since 94 plus we have a SQB on the bench like the friggin 80s.. bravo

We should go get mond. Develop him, let him look good then flip him for a pick

Good f**king job lynch! You've built a roster with insane top-end talent AND insane depth.

I love this man.

Plus we can trade JG to a team that loses it's starter.

You guys wait and see. When a starter goes down after getting stuck by lightning, peds, hookers, or violating team rules for going on the masked singer you will all understand the true genius in this move.

No, I don't see that. Turay has experience. Gipson has experience. Etc.
They are redshirting and easing in tons of new guys. And for backups they prefer someone who knows the system over a better talent.

It's not super bad or anything, but the pattern is definitely there, and sometimes it gets annoying. Sometimes you gotta take a leap of faith on talent over knowledge of the system/familiarity.

Good take.

Yeah, this team is too tight to have any divided locker room IMHO.

But wow - you gave up THREE firsts and you need insurance? Yikes. I hope it's a developmental concern due to lack of playing time and nothing else.

None of this makes ANY sense. They weren't going to determine Lance was a bust in 1 year, and Goropollo is a 49er for at most the end of THIS season. Nobody was firing either Lynch or Shanahan end of this season, so again makes 0 sense that they'd do this to save their jobs.

If we don't make the playoffs and lance is not good their heads are definitely on the chopping block.

You cannot give up 3 first round picks for a guy to ride the pine an entire year because he can't beat out an average starter at his spot and then have him be given the spot and suck.

It effectively asks him to be great in year 3, and 4 before it gets expensive again. The 5th year option isn't cheap.

If he's not at least good this year he's already a bust given how much was used to acquire him. That decision lands completely on shanny and lynch.

Harbaugh was run out for less and that was with lap already going to a Superbowl and showing promise.

If lance isn't good heads will roll unless Jimmy save the day comes in and we still win games.

QB is easier than ever.. rule changes every year to the point out and out semi-scrubs like Winston hit 5k not 4k.. 5 large yards single season.. 4000 used to be a thing, for example Joe Montana never hit 4k.. last year 10 QBs hit 4k, 2 hit 5k..

You can't breathe on the receivers.. new rule emphasis this year is illegal contact. You can contact within 5 yards.. however.. that contact has to remain unbroken.. if you lose contact you cannot recontact or it's a foul.. illegal contact.. they called it 36 times all last season, they called it 15 times in week 1 of this preseason alone.. if a physical receiver (is Deebo physical? BA? JJ? ) rips away from his defender in that first yard.. he's untouchable the rest of the way.

It's about hitting open receivers, getting free scramble yards when everything is covered.. it's like KS says this is simple stuff.. can you do it? Our entire team wins on routes, including a All Pro TE, best in class FB, top LT, 2 #1 wideouts.. and ppl talking about he may be a bust.. he may throw for 4k and run for 500.
