Boo hoo we didn't sign a 10 million dollar a year, 30 year old free safety to play Strong Safety.

Did he get $10M a yr? Yeah, no thanks, I'm good with what we have.

you keep using the word "if" how about we wait to see "if" any of that other stuff happens first?

"if" Deebo was gonna get moved IMO it would have happened. "if" Mack retires it frees up some more cap space and they could go sign JC Tretter who's run a similar scheme and a damn good center in his own right. I agree we can't have Mack retire though.

Where are you getting this take of our secondary getting roasted? Overall the numbers don't match that take. They have IMO 3 starting CBs in Mosely/Ward/Thomas. They drafted two more CBs and Jimmie Ward is one of the best coverage S in football. We have multiple great coverage LBers as well. Toss in a blitzkrieg of defensive lineman, overall I'm not worried about our defense.

The unknowns for me are on the OL. They got 4 OL (plus West) that are all either what ifs from last yr or rookies this yr. They've put some picks into that position group and the competition will help the cream rise to the top.
the safety thing is horrible.. did you see the secondary last year.. horrible.. yes. i love our free agent but man secondary is still a concern
yes he did see and still can't figure out why you said that. neither can I. There is no way we can win 7-9 and two playoff games getting roasted in the secondary ..impossible

but i'm sure you won't post anything to back it up. so we will just go with another bad take/fact from the Mr Hyde CC, not the Dr Jekyll CC..

New Orleans just kicks the can down the road every year. It's not a winning strategy IMO. Gonna have to cut 40+ million next year too.

9ers cap issues stem from one player and one player alone. The minute they realize they are overrating his value and make a deal with Houston the better.

Its kind of ironic some members know more about the safety position than the guy who actually played the safety position and made the hall of fame at the safety position too. Not to mention the group of coaches that coach the players everyday.

But yes tell us more.

There's nothing special about our safeties though. Ward Is decent and the most consistent one we have. As for Tartt, he's alright overall, but struggles to stay healthy and can't Intercept a pass to save his life. It's a position that needed upgrading Imo.

When KS/JL took over the team our existing safeties were reliable but not special. Our scheme was take away big plays and force a march down the field.

They figured Ward/Tartt were ok with the style of D and invested in DL

There may be a change in S philosophy coming though

Hufuanga is more splash and less reliable than Tartt

Right now it appears to be his job to lose

It's easy to say that this off season hasn't been great for SF. The Deebo and JG situations are bad enough but they didn't sign any major free agents and lost a couple of starters. (Mostert and Tomlison) as well as D J Jones. The draft may or may not turn out to be a good one but we didn't land any high profile players and Lynch didn't make any moves. On the surface, the draft looks very average and uneventful. Like I said that doesn't mean it won't turn out well but I can see how a fan could look at it and not be impressed.

i see, so the off season is all about making moves, landing marquee free agents and high profile draft picks so you can make a splash and impress the fans. Got it. Here I was thinking that the main goal in the off season was to try and improve the team. As I think I mentioned earlier in this thread I thought this draft played out pretty well. No saying at this point how any of these guys will work out but they all seem to fit that Lynch/Shanahan profile. High character guys who are passionate about the game and who have had some success at the level of competition they were playing at and who have a bit of dog in them. I don't follow college football but the media chatter around this year's draft seemed to be that it was distinctly lacking in top end talent but had a lot of good depth players. That kind of draft really plays to the 49ers strengths.

If the first five years of this regime have taught us anything it's that the team has a really good eye for late round picks and UDFA's. In fact they seem to be better at picking those guys then they are at selecting "name" players in the first two rounds. Kittle, Bourne, DJ Jones, Greenlaw, Warner, Brieda, Reed, Al-Shaair, Mosley, Jennings,Mitchell, Mostert all guys that came in the third round or later who have ended up being either stars or solid contributors on this team or some other, as in Reed's case. I was reading about the safety they picked up as an UDFA, Leon something, and he chose to come here because this team has demonstrated that they don't care where you were drafted or how you came into the league, If you show up and are willing to compete you have shot at making the roster and working your way up the ladder. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this year's draft class plays out. Just in reading about some of these guys and learning a little bit about how they got where they are it seems like a lot of them will be worth rooting for which is what makes training camp and pre-season interesting. Go Niners!

LOL. John Lynch's PR guy strikes again.

It's OK to point out a deficiency in this roster. This has been an anti-playmaking secondary for ages now.

I will take a bend but don't break, full length of field drive secondary any day of the week over a splashy, playmaking secondary that gives up chunck plays and quick scores.

Be nice to have both eventually. We don't need an overrated Marcus Peters/Trevon Diggs player but a playmaking safety would be helpful.

A safety with jump ball skills would be nice but definitely wouldn't want a guy with a tendency to get caught flatfooted biting on an in breaking route and getting beat over the top.
