John Lynch - 49ers GM

Millen was one of my favorite players but he proved to be a stubborn and ineffective GM. To think Lynch is anything like Millen is really off in my opinion. Listening to Millen give advice on being a GM is like finding the worst golfer in the world for tips on putting.

Maybe this is why Steve Young never took a role with the 49ers.

Young says he may have quit ESPN years ago if not for his private equity partners, who like him to keep a high profile. When he works a Monday Night game for the network, he spends no more than an hour or two at the stadium preparing his commentary, he says; the rest of the time, he's holed up in HGGC's suite, cramming for deals. Once the game starts, he barely watches the action. A couple of transactions, he notes, have even been agreed to with handshakes in the suites.

"My wife hates football, and my kids don't really care," Young says. "I see myself as a deal guy first. I've put football behind me. Roger Staubach once told me—and I'll never forget it: 'When you retire, run. Never look back.' "

Yup. He's a bright guy with better options. Sounds about right.

This is the problem with hiring a GM that doesn't have a lot of experience. He relies on Peters and once Peters leaves...well....let's hope Lynch absorbs everything and applies it the way the good ones show him.

Makes sense. He did leave football because of concussions, his wife probably detest football because of that.

I really hope so, but he does seem to have a lot respect around the league so I think he can consistently bring in good personnel guys. That will be a sign of a truly good GM.

So many flavors, why be salty Lou?

Last month, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick was a candidate to become the General Manager of the 49ers. At the time, Riddick labeled San Francisco the best place for a new coach of any of the six teams that had a head-coaching vacancy.

"I think the most appealing job is the one where you're going to be able to go in and start fresh with a G.M. and a head coach," Riddick said. "I like the situation that is coming to bear here in San Francisco. I like what Jed York is trying to do."

The 49ers later passed over Riddick for the G.M. job and hired John Lynch, with Kyle Shanahan as head coach. And now Riddick doesn't see that 49ers job as quite so appealing.

Today on ESPN, Riddick ranked the six teams that hired new head coaches in order of how good a situation they have, and the 49ers ranked sixth out of the six.

So what changed between then, when Riddick saw the 49ers as the best job, and now, when he sees it as the worst job?

That will be the key for him, building a pipeline of talented scouts so that you can afford to have your top personnel person leave and you've got at least a couple promising personnel guys standing in the on deck circle.

We know why he is at ESPN and not still in the NFL. So its pretty clear he is pissed at not getting the job.

At least be thankful the niners considered him.

Maybe the niners found out something about him that turned them off hence no 2nd interview

See, works both ways Louie

LOL hiding no animosity towards us. I for one am super glad we didn't get him. From publicly stating that he would take this job, to bashing it outright. He is gonna lose the little credibility he has left.
I saw that segment on ESPN and didn't think it was that bad. Compared to the other five teams in terms of player personnel, we are last because of Baalke. Riddick ranked the 49ers last of the six teams that hired new head coaches in order of how good a situation they have. We don't have a QB and we have the least talent compared to the other five teams.

I don't think he was referring to his past statement in which he labeled San Francisco the best place for a new coach of any of the six teams that had a head-coaching vacancy, which was due to the GM vacancy. Riddick, to my surprise was complementary today about Lynch and Shanahan, possibly due to Herm Edwards being on the panel as well to defend Lynch. Riddick said we have to land solid starters with our first and second picks in the next two drafts.

He was a job candidate sucking up when he made the previous remarks whereas his latest comments come as an analyst.
