He has Paraag doing the cap, he will have personnel guys doing scouting, and somehow I dont see John having problems with the interview process. He is a smart guy and this isnt rocket science.

This. It'd be one thing if he had to assume ALL the traditional duties of a GM but he is in a situation where he will be able to lean on a lot of people, especially if Dominik and Hickey both join the front office. I think he can be a big help when it comes to FA, as well as being the point of contact for people around the NFL, instead of having to deal with Baalke or York, now you have Lynch handling all of that. I hope he succeeds.

I really wish they fire that stooge.

He's like the opposite of a Cohn or a Kawakami. He's so overly optimistic about everything its annoying.

I wouldn't mind the optimism but it is the way he backs it up with supposed insider knowledge that he won't share that bothers me. Like when he would go on about knowing Jed had a plan and that he had talked to him many times about the plan but couldn;t really explain it to us dumb fans. It comes off as arrogant BSing.

He's been talking up Gabbert, Jed, Baalke, Chip, etc over the last couple years, he's so stupid. Not everything is terrible and not everything is wonderful.

lol too bad lynch isn't gonna have total control like Millen did....

Yeah, I think many are undermining the level of commitment and skill set that is required to be a successful GM (most thankless job in the biz)...that said, this does not seem to be setting up as a traditional GM role either. But Millen is right...Lynch doesn't know what Lynch doesn't know right now...it'll be years before he has a firm grasp on how to acquire coaches, firings, interview process, working with the analytics and scouting teams, free agency, cap, player acquisitions, being middle management (between owners/coaches), legal, media, etc.

We could have hit the ground running but now we have a developmental GM.

Let these words absorb and then tell me how you think about BFF decision to hire John Lynch.

We have a GM who will be learning how to be a GM. We have a developmental GM!

A developmental GM!

We have a first time HC!!!

Hiring Kyle Shannahan and giving him John Lynch is like drafting Peyton Manning and surrounding him with rookies at OL, RB, and WR's.

Exactly. This is a far cry from Matt Millen in my opinion.

I rather have the guy willing to take a harder way to make a name for himself

That's why I'm actually loving the Kyle Shanahan hire. He knows what an uphill battle he has to get the 49ers franchise back to being a top 10 franchise. Shanahan isn't panicking on what he doesn't have or what kind of credentials a GM has or doesn't have.

People seem to be getting so worked up over the John Lynch hiring that they are forgetting that Kyle Shanahan will be coming to town, which is the bigger deal. IMO

Yeah Kyle saves this off-season. We got a nice prospect coach and football runs in his bloodline.

We just have to hope Lynch is a fast learner or he's actually been preparing for this moment.

So who do you think will run the draft?

I think ultimate responsibility will go to Dominik and Gamble with Lynch having the final say.

Exactly. Thank-you for making the point.

So why is this terrible again?

Because you've just put your rebuild on the shoulders of at least one person, Gamble, who has literally been slapped in the face and told he's here to run a draft and be a scapegoat at best. You've also committed to hiring people to do the job your GM is supposed to do and given final roster responsibility to someone who's never been held accountable for evaluating talent at any level of professional football. I'd love to find a silver lining in this but if this was the result of all that change then they could have let Baalke continue to screw things up.

Dynasty to Disaster is just a York away

Good lord, you act as if they'll be working in silos and refuse to be on the same page.

You act like Gamble is happy with the outcome, will continue to believe that he has a future with the team and that he won't be a scapegoat for the upcoming draft..... or that he won't look at this as a professional insult, start flogging his own personal connection wire (which I expect far exceeds Lynch's) and be gone long before the draft

If Gamble wants to act as if HE should get the GM position because he was "next in line", then he ought to rethink why he is where he is at this point in his career. Perhaps he's content with directing one of the personnel departments. I don't knowi he's happy and never "acted" like he'd be happy with the move, but if he wants to get pissy with his new boss and not act like a mature adult by his job the best he can then... I say good riddance.

Or his very pointed "No comment" when asked about it...
LOL at our front office:

Hires a first time GM with zero scouting exprience.
Hires a first time HC
Possibly uses analytics to draft players.

How so? When Millen was hired he had Bill Tobin as Director of Player Personnel, he was the GM of Chicago and Indy (with the Colts he drafted Faulk and Harrison). So it wasn't like he was not surrounded by guys with experience.

In the eighties there were Niner fans that used to complain that we didn't win by enough points sometimes. They thought that, considering the level of competition, we should have trounced certain teams, when the game ended up being close.

For the last two years, there have been many fans posting that this team needed football people at the top of the management structure and that TB had to go. Now TB is gone, the team is rumored to be pursuing experienced management people to populate the upper level management, and the complaints are rolling in.

It never ends with our fans, the forty whiner fans...

You got that right.

Red Hickey? Niner's head coach, 1959 to 1963. Invented the shotgun formation. He's dead.
