Because he is evaluating Gamble this year, then that puts Lynch at PFO.

We still do not have a GM.

BFF's hired the coach first with no GM hire.

I would assume that Gamble would be evaluated as director of scouting or player personnel at this point. But Im not sure it really matters much. You can't scrap the whole scouting department a couple months before the draft. Id be surprised if Gamble makes it past this season no matter how good our draft turns out. Im sure Lynch has people in mind that he personally knows and trusts.

Nobody knows how this will turn out. GM position is more luck than skill imo. There isn't a GM in this sport who does his own scouting. They all rely on the people in the front office, the scouts, coaches, etc...

Lynch is a smart guy who knows how this game works. We'll have people in place to help him out. A coach who knows offense would work well with a GM who knows defense.

I think Lynch can be a lot closer to Elway than Matt Millen...but if we draft Mike Williams at #2 get those torches ready.

But seriously everyone starts somewhere and any one of us can luck into doing a pretty good job as a GM if we had the right people telling us their opinions. I think Kyle Shanahan as HC was already a risky move yet most people are fine with a first time HC(very different than coordinator). May as well take a shot and hope it works out. Lynch has a 2-3 year window to learn the ropes and drafting top 5 is much easier than mid-late first. Most of us could do it and have decent results.

Sit back and hope for the best. i don't see a middle ground with this duo. I think they either do a great job of turning this team around(not any time soon) or they crash and burn.

Oh holy s**t, if the 49ers take a WR with their 1st round pick you know those floodgates would open up in a hurry.
At John Lynch knows something about quarterbacking

What? They hired a GM who doesn't have all power...it's gonna be a collaborative venture between GM/HC along with guys that are likely to come in to help (Hickey and Dominik).

Like that was any surprise. Everyone knew we'd out with the least qualified candidate.

The 49ers also have a Director position in charge of contracts, Brian Hampton is in that role.

Thanks for the reminder. So much angst that the new GM isn't a specialist in details normally handled by other employees!

lol too bad lynch isn't gonna have total control like Millen did....

If you compared their IQs, I'd bet Lynch would outperform Millen...just a hunch

Just gotta watch America's game episodes to see the difference between them. Millen on 1980 raiders lynch on 2002 bucs

The more I think about it the more I read and see good quality respected football people saying this could be a smart or brilliant move the more I like it. We have had failure for years. Failure didn't scare me anymore. This Franchise needs brilliance so maybe just maybe this may work. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I think many are undermining the level of commitment and skill set that is required to be a successful GM (most thankless job in the biz)...that said, this does not seem to be setting up as a traditional GM role either. But Millen is right...Lynch doesn't know what Lynch doesn't know right now...it'll be years before he has a firm grasp on how to acquire coaches, firings, interview process, working with the analytics and scouting teams, free agency, cap, player acquisitions, being middle management (between owners/coaches), legal, media, etc.

We should probably consider it since Kerley is our top receiver. Just if he goes receiver 3 years in a row we have a problem.

I think they're going to wait until they hire Shanny and have them both introduced together.
