The move could have significant ramifications throughout the NFC West and create a major challenge for the San Francisco 49ers, who will be forced to face Garrett at least twice each season. The first matchup is scheduled for Week 1, when the 49ers and Rams open their seasons in Melbourne, Australia.
The Rams were already viewed as one of the NFL's top Super Bowl contenders. Adding a player of Garrett's caliber only strengthens their championship outlook. Further, it shifts the balance of power within a highly competitive NFC West that also includes the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
For the 49ers, who have Super Bowl aspirations of their own, the path to a division title and deep playoff run could become even more difficult. The addition of Garrett gives Los Angeles one of the league's most formidable defensive fronts.
Although Garrett is entering his 10th NFL season, he remains one of the most dominant defensive players in football. Last season, he recorded 23 sacks, setting a new NFL single-season record, while extending his streak of double-digit sack campaigns to eight consecutive seasons.
Garrett has amassed 125.5 career sacks and continues to be one of the league's premier game-wreckers. His arrival in Los Angeles immediately elevates the Rams' defense, strengthens their chances of dethroning the Seahawks, and creates a significant obstacle for the 49ers.
