Kaepernick's Trade Value

Kaepernick's value won't increase after spending a year on the bench. He's better off taking a pay cut from another team IF he ever wants to play football again. If I were him, I'd be happy to stay shelved for a year collect 12 million for not doing anything and retire.

Most pro athletes have more desire to keep playing than that.

I don't think it's a guarantee he will be sitting on the bench if he is still on this team next season, he will have the opportunity to win the job in camp and the competition isn't necessarily unbeatable.
Mojave, the only thing that bothers me is your statement, "Keeping kap can't hurt the 49ers".

For a moment let's go back to the issue of kap the divider...as in having two locker rooms instead of one. Never in all my decades following pro or collegiate sports have i ever heard of a deal like that. There was kap and his posse, (ok OL guys, like joe staley, and I suppose other OL guys). Then there was the OTHER locker room...the guys that weren't kap guys. Maybe they felt Alex got screwed, maybe they didn't like kap tapping aldon's ex GF, maybe they didn't like kap coming into locker room with ear buds on and shutting out the rest of the team....maybe lots of things. But whatever the reasons were, i know this. Two locker rooms, instigated by the leader of the team, the QB, is a toxic environment. Hard to believe harbaw allowed that, but tomsula...yeah i could believe that.

Whatever, it has been obvious that there was not just division amongst the fans, but also the team. And to say "Keeping kap can't hurt the 49ers" to me is horse puckey. I think kap VERY DEFINITELY hurts the 49ers, and chip, coming from a team where there was severe division.... i can readily believe he wants NONE of that. To be frank, i believe NONE of the players want any of that. So it is not without consequence to "keep kap". Regardless of what transpired before until the present, i think the kid is toxic to any environment here at 49erland. Keeping someone around who has been known to be toxic is a major league blunder and i bet anything that chip feels exactly that way also. I get the "don't give kap away" mentality. I agree with it. I am just saying this kid has some serious extenuating circumstances surrounding him, some serious immaturity, and having him around is not conducive to a happy locker room, nor is it conducive to a united team. And since we are in a talent hole, in a veteran hole, have just come thru the worst HC administration in the hx of pro football, i would think everyone hanging together is a lot better than having 2 locker rooms...not to mention the guy who caused it.

In the best of world's we get compensated by Den what we think kap is worth. But if we don't get it and kap and Den come to an agreement on salary,, (Less than what kap would get here), I would say take the lesser compensation, a 4th over a 3rd, or whatvever and break the bonds that tie us to one of the really worst scenarios the 49ers have experienced for the entire 39 yrs i have followed them. If kap stays around, there will be some guys that gravitate towards him and some that don't. It is worth a subjective choice , ie a 4th instead of a 3rd to see him gone. Like really gone....never to be seen again. And then pray we never get a team destroyer like him ever again. Especially at the key position, QB. Take the damn deal and move on. Now if it were someone of great value and it was a 1st rd pick vs a 5th, no deal. But this subjective to begin with, and it is in the ball park. IF we shade toward giving Den a little better deal for the peace of mind and unified team it brings, then i say do it. What i don't know is if Den and kap can work a salary deal. But if they can, then for heavens' sakes, DO IT.
Chip Kelly I think is safe to say the best offensive HC and OC Kap will have had in SF. Better than Roman and Chryst by far. Kap has a great shot here to rehab his career aside from going to DEN. I'm hoping Chip can be our Mike McCarthy

I agree, this is why I don't see the rush to trade him for a 4th. I think we have to see what he can do with this coaching staff and this new system before we cast him completely off. If he continues to regress then yeah it's time to move on, but I'm optimistic that he can flourish with Kelly and Co.

There is only one way to find out, and sending him to Denver or Cleveland for a bag of footballs is not the way to do it.

This. He has been in a power run system with emphasis on caution from the QB position as opposed to playmaking. Always been on a defensive minded team but now is with a coach who has proven he can generate a top offense in this league. Give up a 2nd round pick or watch what Chip can do with him, simple as that
Casserly showing why he got fired with those statements.

The NFL has always been for positive potential. AJ McKarron a 1st round value lol. Kaep a 3rd or 4th. It's the same reason Osweiler got over paid for playing decent for a few games. Current needy market for qb add to the over price and over value for positive potential. Unfortunately for Kaep he had a s**tty year. No one will over paid or over value for that.

That's why it makes so much more sense for him to go to a good team like the Broncos, if he gets a good year under his belt again, his value will shot back very quickly. It's all about positive potential.

With QBs they will also pay for and gamble on potential. At Auburn Newton was a one read and take off running QB, no way did he deserve the #1 over all pick on what he had shown, upside propelled him from the 2nd round. With Kaepernick in the eyes of the experts he no longer has "potential" he is what he is. If he still had potential teams wouldn't offering 3rd and 4th round picks and wanting him to take a pay cut.

Newton was in fact a one read and take off coming out of college.
But he was a better passer than Kap.
And time has proven that Newton actually has better QB skills than Kap.

What I was talking about is that NFL are choosing to pay to the more traditional pocket passers than to athlete QBs because they doesn't believe in athlete QBs long term
Thats why RGIII is still unemployed and thats why just 1 team made a trade offer for Kap.

NFL hype with athlete QBs has ended and some people(speacially in the zone) are in denial

I dont see how he wins out in training camp. Before he had the advantage because he was the default as the starter. Now they are even or it tips in gabberts favor if the coaches rely on last season. I dont possibly see how he can learn the playbook faster than gabbert. They had to dumb the offense down for him and kellys scheme is far more complicated.

Keeping him and even giving him and gabbert equal footing will hurt the team by splitting resources on 2 qbs. It would be better for them to coach up gabbert as the starter and then wait for him to fail than to try and have a camp competition.
