Game #9 - The Good, Bad, Ugly

Good:

W eases the team's spirit I guess...
Both lines had solid performance...while offense only allowed 2 QH, defense allowed only 17 rushing yards, 2 sacks, 7 hurries.
Seems that Tiller had more snaps from Devey and I think Brown played few snaps as RT while moving Pears to inside.
Despite being thrown to fire, Cromartie and DJ weren't burnt by Falcons receivers as many expected.

Bad

Gabbert was decent and his turnovers was not all by himself (at least first pick) but being contained all 2nd half is just same story with this team.

Ugly

W gives hope to Niners but I know York and Baalke were saying,"See? We know what we're doing..."
Observation:
I think weather was a factor. I'm assuming field conditions were a bit damp. If so, that really fed into the team's strong points: running and stopping the run with big and strong guys.

Good:
Gabbert looked solid. His arm and release is much better than I thought. Did his job and was decisive. I think he provided some nice energy to the team.

Bowman must have woken up on the right side of the bed.

Secondary did their job. Not too many brain farts.

Some of the younger players got some action.

Bad:
The 2nd INT wasn't the best decision. I do like that he looked decisive about it though. Like a gunslinger.

Ellington showed some nice moves. On the punt downed at the 1, I was expecting him to block one of the Falcons. That's still allowed, right?

I'm probably nitpicking: Brooks' offsides

Ugly:
Simpson had a bad day and he knows it.
ive never seen ball placement on the back shoulder this consistently in a long time.
Good - Not many penalties like usual. Need to fix the offsides, but normally we have DUMB penalties taking away big plays.

Bad - Dropped passes. Dafeck
Tha good we won plan & simple ...

Tha bad Lost a few draft spots ...
Good
- Gabbert sparked the offense. Good timing and ball placement on his throws.
- Shaun Draughn. Props to the new guy, he ran hard.
- Pass protection was good. Gabbert's decisiveness and quick decision making really helped this unit.
- Run defense was awesome.
- Mangini called a good game. Dialed up some 5-man pressure packages that were very effective.
- Young secondary played well. Johnson and Cromartie made plays. Tartt and Ward were flying out there.
- Bowman looked fantastic. Slowly regaining strength and confidence in that knee
- Ellington looked fast and shifty on returns
- Were able to deny ATL the ball and run out the clock to seal the win

Bad
- Run blocking was poor imo. Did not see many running lanes open up.
- Too many dropped passes.
- Zero points scored in the 2nd half.
- Gabbert's INT to McDonald was bad. Underthrown and he was covered. Only bad throw he made all game.

Ugly
- Simpson's dropped pass resulting in an INT was brutal. Should have been a big play for us. Good ball by Gabbert.

Bad - play calling during second half. How many run run pass series were there? Gabbert was put into obvious passing downs too many times while trying to protect the lead. I'd like to see them pass more on 1st down and run off of the pass.
it was crazy to see phillip adams. i wondered where he bounced to after the raiders
People are using "players having fun again" as good...

I had a few drinks last night, but I seem to remember even seeing kap celebrating on the sidelines... And smiling a lot. Looked like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders.

Did this happen? or was I over-served lol
Bad: The one pass by Gabbert late in the 4th for INT. Gave Atlanta the momentum to get a score. Could very well be 20-17 Atlanta had they scored a TD. The defense saved the game keeping them to a FG.

Hope he learns to be safer in the 4th with a lead. NEVER DO THAT AGAIN
Just going to do one good and one bad that I didn't see mentioned yet

Good

*With Ward, Tartt, Acker, Johnson, and now Cromartie the 9ers secondary tackles really well and is pretty exceptional in run support. The d-line is getting all of the credit, but we should be talking more about having amassed a group of young and very aggressive CBs and safeties who really don't shy away from getting their noses dirty.

Bad

More confirmation on what so far looks like some majorly missed draft picks along the offensive and defensive lines. TJE had a very good game, but we know enough to not expect that to regularly happen. The bad is that he and Purcell (two UDFAs) have now passed Tank on the depth chart (Tank didn't get a single snap). So too with Marcus Martin (as awful as usual), and a cast-off and 7th round pick (Tiller and Brown) now getting run before Brandon Thomas.

it was single coverage vs a LB. I hope he takes those shots.

If anything it was Vance the clown not being in position

No. That wasn't him taking a shot. It was him having misdiagnosed the coverage and throwing off his back foot directly to a defender because he was facing interior pressure (something we're all pretty familiar with from Kaepernick).

From this game we don't know if Gabbert can effectively play QB while facing interior pressure (which has always been one of the knocks on him), and if he keeps playing it's absolutely something he's going to have to deal with given the 9ers O-Line. Gabbert got to play against one of the worst passing rushing defenses in the NFL this week. I think it's a good defense to go up against if you want to mask his flaws (or, what at least were his flaws before he went to the bench two years ago).

He can handle it. Took the hit.

The Main things that stood out Easily!

Tartt, Ward, and Cromartie. Cromartie really surprised me, i was thinking we were doomed from the get go without having Brock, Acker, or Reaser playing.

But i was wrong. I wouldn't mind seeing Ward take over for Reid and Tartt taking over for Bethea, Tartt is a star in the making IMO.

Bowman went off on this game, he jus kept making plays! guys a monster. i think it's something about the Falcons re sparked his spirits, he must have been thinking about that Monday night at The Stick.

Loved! that Trenton Brown finally got some playing time, that Tiller got most of the snaps. They tried a couple things there with Pears at RG with Brown at RT. I def do think that Tiller and Brown need to be starting, i hope the rumors of Kilgore coming back after the bye is true.

Gabbert impressed me, one of those picks were not his fault, but the one at the end definitely was, but at least he's taking chances, and trying to make plays.

In my book, Patton has earned more playing time. I think we need to sit Simpson, hope to get Boldin after the Bye, and get the ball to Patton, guy loves to make plays. Feed him more!

Draughn impressed me as well, he didn't go off, but he had positive yards, and that's all that matters at this point with our OL, and RB's we're left with.

Overall! i was stunned with the win, it was a tight one, it's not perfect! but it's the best thing we've seen since Week 1 and i am beyond proud. Enjoy the Bye with a win! Go NINERS!
