Iupati hasn't even played a game yet. Had we re-signed him for 5-year $40 mil, we'd still be getting the same s**tty o-line play with the group we have now. Only difference is we'd have a $8 mil per year guard sitting on the shelf, and the same people criticizing Baalke now would be calling him an idiot for re-signing a declining, injury prone player to a massive contract.
Iupati was great, but it was the best move financially to move on.
Its been said a million times. Yes the back ups blow cock(they are back ups not starters). But losing both kilgore and AD have screwed us. I dont know many olines that would be far from disastrous with this big of a reshuffle this late in the offseason. We should have signed mathis early, maybe we tried and he chose denver. But kilgore had his second surgery in june, and AD retired around the same time. This forces martin to go from guard to center, and forces another supposed back up into a main role. Thus devey is brought in to help the competition, brandon thomas doesnt progress from his injury as quick as we would like and now we have him starting. Good luck finding a tackle to replace pears in a ZBS in mid june. Pretty much killed us. Maybe the back ups should be better. But I wouldnt mind the three players that are starting either:
1) starting with veterans surrounding them.
2) starting due to an injury.
But yeah, if you think teams just have a plethora of quality offensive linemen to fix three roles and reshuffle in june then you dont understand the state of oline play in the NFL today, there is a ton of s**ttastic lines in the Nfl, Ours from center to RT just happens to be the worst. Just imagine our offense with Staley - Boone - Kilgore - Whoever - AD, that was the expectation, it is Baalke's responsibility but I cant blame him to much for getting royally f**ked in this case.
