Are you happy with the draft?

I think the sound of what we lost sounds worse than what it actually is. If you put our depth chart down on paper, this team is actually still very much stacked with talent and take 5 mins to soak the paper chart in and I guarantee anybody will feel better about the state of the team. What we loss in some areas we will gain in others. There will be some good football players cut off this team this year and it will be players that were on the roster last year and or the year before.

Yes Wilhoite/Wheeler/Moody isn't the sexy pick to replace Patrick or Borland but then you realize that our pass rush could be the best in the NFL this year. You have Aldon which if you look at what he did with restructring his contract is very much motivated. You have Brooks who has always been good for 5-7 sacks. You have Lynch who got 6 in limited work last year and now you add a Eli Harold to the mix. That's just ridiculous. Tank will finally get a real chance to contribute. We saw the flashes of the pass rush that we've been drooling over from him at the end of the season last year. Let's not forget that Justin hasn't retired yet either.

What do we know about a pass rush? It can make ordinary corners look like pro bowlers. I could see us having at least two corners in the conversation for the pro bowl this year just because of our pass rush. Reid and Bethea were already as solid as any safety tandem in the NFL last year. What could they be with an improved pass rush?

You look on offense at what we lost. Iupati may be the best run blocking guard in the NFL. Crabtree was a key point to our 2012 super bowl run. He hasn't been the same since his injury though and in his place we get one of the leagues priemere deep threats in Smith. Add Simpson who is a younger and faster version of Brandon Lloyd. Someone that makes the circus catches. Works the sidelines. Makes contested deep catches. These guys with Boldin working the intermidiate routes will put Kap right in his comfort zone. Somebody strong enough to catch his 10 yard lasers and two guys that get down the field to take advantage of that arm.

We have a healthy oline now. Thomas may not ever be what Iupati was as a run blocker but it will not be hard for him to be an upgrade as a pass blocker. Add Martin, Pears, and Looney to the mix and collectively we have the most experienced line we've had in years.

Then the dreaded loss of Frank Gore. I have always loved Frank and always will but Hyde showed last year that he is ready to step up. He got better as the year went on and let's not forget he wasn't dominating Seattle before he got hurt last season in the 2nd game and that is when we started to lose control of that game. Add Reggie bush and a healthier Hunter to the mix. Two guys well versed in pass protection and have above average hands out of the backfield and we have the most talented collective stable of backs in a long long time. You may not look at any of them individually and say they can take Franks place but put all of them into one big collective pot and this is an outstanding group, that has many complementary talents. Don't forget about Mike Davis who is very similar to how Frank was coming out of college.

Add in swiss army knife players like Millard and now Bell and there is quite a bit to be excited about. I don't see too many holes that were filled with one individual superstar but there is a lot of collective upgrades in many areas that were filled by two or so solid players over one great player. This game is won by teamwork not flashy superstars. Enjoy the ride niner fans because I think it's going to be a better one than many think.

Great post! Agree with everything!
Admittedly I was depressed Friday night. I thought we weren't addressing needs and drafted more for 2016 than 2015. Many have disagreed with my assessment and I'm finding that actually encouraging. Also I thought we need an ILB and WR and OG where we took OLB and S and project DE. Boone makes me nervous (holdout) and Red shirted Brandon Thomas needs to be as advertised or Martin needs to player better.

But, Baalke knows this team better than I or the Draftniks. So I'm rolling into the positive perspective.
I think a lot of people are of the mind that this was a deep draft class, with superstars everywhere.

I don't really follow college ball, but from what I gather, this class wasn't very deep at all. During the draft, they remarked how after the first 10-15 picks, it was a toss up, talent wise. Arians was talking about how day three could have as many as 10 trades...

Baalke's actions reflect that, in my opinion. And he's so good on draft day usually, so he must have thought another team would have grabbed that punter. Heck, the Patriots drafted a long snapper the very next pick.

I'm not too worried about this draft. It's the red shirted players from the past few we need to worry about. That's another thing I think people are forgetting. We've had such a strong core on this team, Baalke was able to draft for the future. So all those picks everyone has forgotten about are, or should be, just about ready to play. He drafted with the knowledge of that, in my opinion, and he thinks those players are ready to play.

It makes a whole bunch more sense when you think about it that way. His M.O. since he's been here has been value drafting for the future.
This wasn't a horrible draft like some seem to think, I think we got a lot of talent in this draft, I would have rather had a different pick in the 2nd but it does make sense why Baalke went with a safety. I'm really digging the Eli Harold pick the more i read about the guy the more it seems like the steal of the draft Smelter is an other guy that if he recovers nicely he could be a stud Armstead isn't a sexy pick but with Tomsula and Mangini he will be way better than McDonald

Some of you guys need o relax, idk how many times Baalke has to underwhelm during drafts but then the players become overwhelmingly good before you all realize Baalke does indeed know what hes doing.

I also agree with both posters above! Take a look at the best 49ER Team ever in my opinion, the 1984 SB XIX Champions Defensive front 7! Louie Kelcher, Lean Mean Freddy Dean, Gary Big Hands Johnson, Lawrence Pillars, Michael Carter, Jeff Stover, and Dwayne Pee Wee Board ring a bell? Oh and they say Taart hits like Ronnie Lott!

is that why we went with defense first three rounds lulz?

I thought Bill Walsh said we draft defense but we coach up (teach) offensive talent or was it the other way around?

so you feel comfortable with geep, who was coaching with harbaugh, of turning the offense around?

Not really. And it has nothing to do with the players we took as much as what we didn't do. It's not at all about not getting "my guys" or even thinking that the guys we got (even the head scratchers) can't play.

It's that we basically ignored the positions where we lost the most talent and need the most help either to compete for starting spots, provide depth or because the players we are counting on there are unproven and/or coming off injuries.

This isn't a Superbowl team with plenty of room to develop players for the future any longer. This is an 8-8 team in a tough division that lost multiple pro-bowl to HOF level players plus multiple other solid or better starters.

I just don't see how the talent we have acquired this off season makes us as good or better than we were last year. And last year we were average at best.

This × 1000....

That's the same question I bring up.

"Were we so good that we didn't need to draft anyone that could make an impact on the team this year"

Ah. Drafting someone who could make an impact this year? That is what Baalke did last year. Long term planning. This year's players will get on the field sometimes but by and large their impact will start next year.
English-

I don't think we are in a position to draft with the sole purpose of having those players contribute in a year.

One of the top CBs could've helped us this year, no?

One of the top ILB would've pushed for the starting spot next to Bowman, no?

Im not all that upset about not taking a WR high because we aren't a high volume passing team.

I also think we could've used some help on the oline.
I would of been if we wouldn't of drafted Armstead i can live with every other pick.............well the Punter pick is kind of a head scratcher but still. Drafting that fool just ruined it there was great value still left at the 17 spot for us to end up with a project player it just doesn't make any sense i bet if we had traded late into the 1st snatch up some more picks we still would of ended up with him. I heard no buzz whatsover that any other team was interested or thought much of him.

Not sure about the corners but obviously a top corner would help. As will AA.

ILB? Yes agreed. Everything I have read though indicates that the team thought standards were very low this year.

OLine? Yes, always.

Regarding long term planning, I guess it is a matter of opinion. I think it will keep the team at or near the top for a decade. I am pretty happy to see my team with a plan instead of just drifting as they did from 2000-ish.

The plan is to always improve the talent on the team, and im just not seeing any improvement made with this draft.

Even if we would've drafted just one player that would help out tremendously, I'd be ok.

I'm probably having the same problem as most, and that is, it's hard to be excited about players we wont see on the field this year.
There were reports that Arik Armstead played with an ankle injury last year. That's the one thing that could make me dead wrong about him being a "meh" player at 17 overall. I wasn't impressed with his play this year, but if he was injured that might explain what I saw.

I'm not holding my breath though.
