We're more than $50M under the cap. Money won't dictate who starts here. I think Chip is tickled pink to finally have athletic QB prospects again at this level and all three guys will get a shot regardless of money. The guy that gives us the best shot at winning will play. One personnel guy said Kap in this system is like Freddy Kreuger so we will see which QB gets to be the guy

Exactly. The very idea Chip would play a guy he doesn't think is the best pick at that position is crazy thinking IMHO. Again I am not saying he will or won't pick someone's favorite, but it will be based on performance, not on how much they make.

Well, no matter which side you come down on re: QB, one thing is for certain....unnnhhh, three, actually.

1, Jed needs us to win. Trent needs us to win. Chip needs us to win. Best QB wins the slot, even if it is our late draft pick. Nobody expects that, but best guy plays.

2. Blaine has put a lot of extra time into learning playbook, film study, and will go into camp with a huge edge over kap. But both guys will be able to show us their wares because not only do we have a very good OL, but we have skilled guys at backup positions. Still a ? @ OC, but tiller and I think Garnett can snap the ball. I still hold out hope for an OC cut elsewhere who still has a yr or two left in the tank. Whatever, this yr we won't be able to say, well if Kap/Gab only had a better OL they would look better. This yr they WILL have that good OL, so if a QB plays poorly, it is the QB, not the OL. The pears/devey/Martin nightmare is about to be over.

3. That said, all signs point to Gab with a substantial edge, in that quick reads, accurate throws, short to mid range, quick release, are going to be the recipe du jour. I hope for.a spirited competition, but if kap can't or doesn't know the playbook inside and out, if he can't make quick reads, if he can't make himself have a quick release, this will NOT be a "spirited" competition. It will be a wipe out. Honestly, I hope he takes his social media stuff and locks it in a trunk, studies his azz off, learns quick reads, and forces himself to have a quick release. Also add throw before the break to the list. If he does all those things, then by rights he will start. It will also mean that unlike 31 other teams we end up with 2 starting QBs, and that would be sweet.

Why is #2 for certain in that Blaine will have a huge edge over Kap because he was going over the playbook and conducting film study? Have you read anywhere that Kap isn't doing those things while he rehabs? We haven't much, if anything at all, from Kap's camp so to say he isn't doing those things is just pure speculation at this point.

You are being deliberately obtuse. Putting butts in the seats means putting your absolute best product in the field. Kelly will want to do that. If he thinks he will do better with one QB over the other, that is who will play. You think the guy in the seats pays to see Kaepernick over another QB? Horse crap. Again it may well be his choice but it may not. Abd yes all Jed and the bean counters worry about is seat sales. And to get that the best you can put out there with this new coach is what will happen. Jeds embarrassed more about empty seats than the name on the jersey. And you are absolutely right, this is a rebuild year. Dogging it this year just to play the expensive guy would be foolish. If that was the only reason.
There is about a half dozen zoners that would. For the rest of the population there are too many entertainment options in the area for a losing team to draw strong support. Some areas will support losing teams, the Bay area isn't one of them. Winning will fill seats no matter how it is done.

On point #2, unless there was huge secret effort for Kaepernick to do that in Denver, there are no public statements saying he did do it. There are public statements saying Blaine did do it. Another reason it might not be a huge jump to assume this is that while Kaepernick and his agents were focused on getting him traded, how much effort was realistically spent on intense study of an offense he not only didn't commit to learning, but for a team he doesn't want to be on? You are correct that no one knows for sure, but it us not an unreasonable assumption to make that Blaine may have been hitting the books deeper, and for longer, than Kaepernick has.

Fair, but still speculation. How much focus on a trade was happening with Kap and his agent? There has been barely any talks since Kap has reported which was almost a month ago and Elway and the Broncos have come out and publicly said the trade talks were dormant about a week before the draft. So I don't think there has been a lot of time over these past 30 days of Kap especially, but he nor his agent, pursuing a trade to the extent that some make it out to be. That was back in March when that was taking place and they put the feelers out there and got a few bites but the Browns dropped out almost immediately and the Jets never showed a ton of interest to begin with. So if Kap and his agent were still hardcore pursuing a trade, which nothing tells me they were after April 4th, then I'd say they haven't been very productive. However, I don't think they have been nearly as much as some make it out to be on here (not saying you, just some posters in general). The FO certainly hasn't been calling around on his behalf so I'd like to say he has been putting in work at the facility since April 4th and doing what he has to do and that is a fair assumption as well, wouldn't you think?

Well, due to comments about his study habits, Kaepernick is not automatically assumed to be spending tons of times on the playboooks, in many fans eyes. But I am looking at it a bit more from a jaundiced view. He was not committed at all, in my mind, until he showed up. Now realistically, while he was recuperating from multiple surgeries, and wanting to be traded, I just don't see anyone spending tons of time studying film and playbook's for a good deal of that period. Conversely, Gabbert went all in as we say, immediately after the hiring of Chip. So yeah, I think that may be an advantage. The other advantage is that while Kaepernick was in the building, a good deal of that time had to be spent on his rehab. Gabbert was able once again to do nothing but study, attend meetings and work with his coaches. I am sure that at this point Kaepernick is doing everything he can to catch up. But yeah, I think he is going to be a little behind, and his physical conditioning is going to be slightly problematic.. Not saying he isn't on track, but while he is spending hours working on his thumb/knee/shoulder, Blaine was out tossing the brick, working on plays and timing.

I am not saying that this plays out automatically to one guy winning and the other losing the job, but it seem logical to me that Blaine appears to have to have an edge in the preparation game at the moment. And to assume otherwise given the circumstances, would be the more risky analysis.

I'm not saying Blaine doesn't have an edge, I just don't think it's a huge edge. Kap was attending those same meetings as Gabbert and was also on the field taking mental reps. Now that is not the same as actually throwing the football around but it's better than nothing. I just know we haven't heard much of anything from Kap's camp since he has reported other than he is "kinda digging" Chip. I think Chip will have a huge influence on Kap in his study habits. This is something that needs to take place on one's own but I don't think Harbaugh nor Tomsula held Kap to that high standard. I do however think Chip will and will expect Kap to know and understand the things Chip wants to go over the next day. Remember, Tomsula's system essentially remained the same when he took over for Harbaugh whereas this is an entirely new system for everyone (thank god) and they all have no choice but hit the books hard. I just think it is a completely different mindset from the coaching staff that what some players were able to get away with before, will not happen now. I trust Chip will essentially force the playbook down Kap's throat, if necessary. I don't think it's necessary however and I believe Kap is putting in work behind the scenes and is becoming rejuvenated as a player. All speculation on my part though but we know he isn't in the weight room all day and he damn sure isn't rehabbing from dusk til dawn so I trust Chip and his work ethic to expect and get the absolute most/best out of everyone on the team and that includes Kap.

Didn't this exact same scenario play out with RG3 and his $16 million on the bench?

Yep, and now Kirk 'you like that!' Cousins is their new 16 million dollar man.

Show me in what year RG3 made $16 million sitting on the bench?? Or even $12 million??

All good points, but can anyone tell me what part of Kaepernick's game he has improved in five years? This is Einstein's definition of insanity.

My personal view is that the real weakness to Kaepernick's game is to make quick reads, adjustments, and decisions at NFL play speed, and this quick thinking is just not something he has a high aptitude for. The result is that more study does not strengthen his game where it needs strengthening. Even Coner Cook said the Niners did the virtual reality thing with him to measure his quick thinking, and that's something Kaepernick said he didn't like or do. You don't like what you are not good at. But, I'm encouraged the Niners seem to put a premium on this this year.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Kaepernick absolutely could not have been on the field as much, even shadowing, or in all of the meetings if he was spending his time with the Docs and trainers. there is only so much time in the day and if you are sending hours a day in rehab when the others aren't, you are falling behind. And if he isn't spending hours a day on his rehab he is crazy. That time can not be neglected. And like I said, how much time would someone spend learning about a coach and playbook when they were rehabbing in another state and trying to get traded?

If any of the scenarios put out by his apologists (not saying you are) are remotely true, he was angry, feeling betrayed, upset with team docs, etc. Either they need to roll all that stuff back, or everything I read in the past few months leads me to believe cramming and preparation for a team he doesn't want to play for would not have been a high priority.

I get that you are trying to put him in a good light, but I just don't see that we have any inkling that Kaep was cramming for Kelly and his system in Colorado.. And not because it is Kaepernick we are talking about, but almost anyone in that position. But given the realities of his surgeries, that alone would have precluded him from spending as much time with coaches and team mates i this past camp. I don't think it is anything that can not be overcome, but I think Gabbert definitely got ahead of the curve, and not just by a little. It remains to be seen whether or not that will show on the practice field when they go head to head in a couple of months though. And while Kaepernicks only comment so far is that he is "digging Kelly a little" I haven't seen anything remotely like walking back his trade request, so how far into the team is he really?

I do agree though that Kelly will force proper study habits, and will not tolerate people that "don't get it"...particularly if he doesn't see them putting in the off field study required, so going forward I don't expect to hear about that.

Questions, questions, and no definitive answers.

Kaepernick needs to play better if he wants to start.
I really hope this kid finally "gets it" that he needs a team more than the team needs him.
