I still think we're pretty light at OG:

Cooper
Tomlinson
Garnett
Magnuson(?)

Although there will be a competition, I'm wondering again if we don't sign another vet to come in an help push this group who have a lot of question marks.

I agree, I wish we had a young OG pushing these guys but obviously they still like Garnett and maybe he can still turn into a very solid NFL guard. Cooper was very solid for the Cowboys last year. His biggest problem is staying healthy. If he is healthy, I think he is at least a slight upgrade over Fusco. Tomlinson played pretty well down the stretch, I think he will be pretty solid. Richburg I think is going to be a stud center and make these guards look a little better as well. Magnuson adds solid depth at guard AND center and can even play RT in a pinch.
The battle I am really interested in is Darrell Williams vs Gary Gilliam for the top back-up OT spot...
I wonder if the 49ers de-facto insistence that players off-season in Santa Clara might be a problem with the NFLPA at some point.

Maybe Kyle and JL are looking at Garnett as a rook who is going to push Laken, Magnus and coop. Perhaps we do get a middling OG vet to add in the mix. But maybe we are looking at GArnett the wrong way. Maybe he is the young stud who keeps this crew on its toes, even tho he has been around a yr...although inactive. He does look like a new man, and hopefully that is the way he plays , too. All we need is ONE of the OGs to look sharp and we'll be ok. Richburg can help out with the other OG...although my hope is that OG2 , say Laken, is just fine by himself. Do that and this O looks , well, formidable. I sure wasn't thinking that in the draft, however, as the OGs got named off, one after another. Now, looking back, i am starting to get excited about seeing this group on the field and what they can do... the Pettis thing, kind of left me cold. Now....i can't wait to see him along with the JET, and JimmyG unplugged. The new OL needs to be great. Wouldn't it be great if that actually happened. If so, put me down as a good bet for the final 4. ...at least. And as long as we get that far, why not win it all?

Yeah that'll be a good one but one more year of seasoning more than likely for Williams JR.

I think 4 reserves will be Laken, Magnuson, Shelton and Gilliam.

What y'all think.

Me too...very intrigued by Williams.

Me too, especially after Kyle went out his way to recognize him at the owner's meetings.

Darrell Williams is the next OL to root for to compensate for the loss of big Trent

We have this neat thing called player development now. It's so exciting! I used to be so jelly watching teams like the Patriots develop players year after year. Pumped that we've finally got a competent coaching staff that understands the importance of player development. I think that played a role in why the team only brought in a limited number of UDFAs/tryouts. They've invested in a core group of late picks/undrafted players last year and want to continue watering those seeds.

You're totally right my friend. We're drafting some freaks, productive players thatre scheme fits at the same damn time.
Last year with such a patch up line, Jimmy manage to make plays and stay pretty clean. I think the line is much better than people realize. Garnet will be better than people think. The guards will do a satisfactory job. Cooper may have an edge, but don't surprised Magnuson steals it. In fact the biggest question mark is Mike at RT during passing downs.

It's funny because it's true!

Good analysis. Yeah, Garnett did the opposite of what Brown did for his off-season rehab and it appears he's being rewarded. They're definitely going to give him a chance. IMHO, I think the 49ers made up their mind about Garnett/Brown in December and once Brown decided to go home to rehab and came back out of shape equaled final straw.

The guys can get better if they're committed to the program. I haven't read much about Tomlinson's dedication to the program, but he must be doing something right because he's getting all kinds of chances and if there's one thing consistent about the new regime, they reward players who are bought all into the program. We've seen Magnuson be all-in already. Kilgore and Brown being traded and Fusco and Beadles being let go have to send a really clear as crystal message.

Hard to get younger than they are! Some rookies may surprise everyone and stick--Shelton, Knott, McGloster...hard to tell.

Garnett 24
Magnuson 24
Tomlinson 26
Cooper 28

Most rookies are 23 so... ...this is a young group!
