Has Baalke done a good job of getting some speed for this offense this offseason?

Traditionally the Niners don't draft CB early (Mike Rumph 1st round 2002) was the last time we went CB in the first round. With that said...this year's CB class seems weak. Don't see us drafting one in the first round, but it does need to be addressed early.

but don't sleep on Johnson. he's proven to be a gamer.

I know Brock is out number 1, but that doesn't mean a team will line up their number 1 agaisnt him all the time. Besides as sick as he played in 2013, last year he couldn't shake the injury bug. To say he can play all 16 games next year is a stretch.

It is interesting what we have done. Whether it pans out remains to be seen. According to one report we ran less than 10 screens all of last year, I believe the report said 5. I knew we didn't run it much and wanted them to do it more, but didn't realizr it was that little. I guess that is one of the sticking points with those in charge last year and why he got Bush. This will slow guys down and also open up play action even more as well as Kaep's runs.

Another things is we could still use WR, Boldin is in his final year and Baalke always said drafting before there is a need. WR takes time to develope, so wouldn't surprised, but as many have mention it does give us more BPA. I really doubt it, but if a Kevin White or Amari Cooper some how slips to 15 or close (13) I won't be surprised if niners pick them even if it is no longer a pressing need. DL, OL, CB can now be focused on with BPA.

Johnson looked good, especially for a rookie but i agree with DMoney we need to cover our bases if only for injury concerns.

Ward, Brock and Cook missed significant time. I think Wright can be solid with a change of front 7 scenery but if he bombs out/Top 3 CB's get injured I would feel better if we had another 2nd-4th round draft choice to throw in the mix with Reaser(love his highlight tapes), Acker(looked to have a nose for the ball in preseason) and McFadden(who graded out positive in Pass Coverage according to PFF in his limited snaps).

The only area he's shown weakness in is DRAFTING wide receivers, not in signing them. I don't see why you'd be worried about FA signings becuase we have a good track record there. Isaac Bruce and Randy Moss were done and we squeezed some production out of them. Anquan Boldin has been a stud, Stevie Johnson came in for a bit and put in quality work. So when it comes to the signings of T.Smith and Simpson, I don't think Baalke can mess it up as bad as you think he can.

Speed isn't necessarily what we need either. Smith filled that void, now he's got other tasks.

Yeah like finding another Patrick Willis and another Justin Smith.

When P Willis went down Chris Borland filled in admirably.

Justin Smith- has not announced retirement. If he does they signed Dockett and hopefully Carradine steps up.

Cannot fault a GM who prepared for two 30 plus year old players potentially leaving.

This is one area I have been waiting for Baalke to improve in on the offensive side of the ball, so far so good. Cant wait for the draft!

Do we NEED a #1 CB? We were #5 last year in yards and #1 in INT's with Reid/Bethea (first year) plus this array of players: Cully, Brock, McFadden, Johnson, Cromartie, Ward, Cox, Cook, etc.

It seems like to me, if the CB's (whoever they are) play within the scheme, we'll be MORE than fine. I actually think the current group has more upside and could end up being BETTER than last year too.

No, not really. Based on research several fans did, Mangini ALSO comes from the same "off coverage" schemes that Fangio ran here. Is Tim Lewis as good as Donatell? Is Mangini better than Fangio? We'll see but we can probably expect the same "coaching up" by Lewis AND very similar schemes re: off coverage with a bit more aggression (more press and more blitzing compared to Fangio - least in the NFL).

this. until mangini and the rest of defensive staff proves it is as effective as lord fangio, i think we should invest in some talent at CB.
