oh,, i forgot,, we need a legit bonafide return man for kicks and punts. james is as good as vapor so whether it is some sort of combo of our new wide out doing both, or maybe him doing punts while hunter and or cox does kickoffs i do not care. one person or a three headed rattlesnake (buck!) i do not care

It's going to be Ellington most likely (or Devon Wiley or UDFA S L.J. McCray). Also, I was very surprised how many picks we had that have a ton of return experience (and success). I wish I can find the post. It was a screen shot and one guy has better production that Ellington!

we also need someone who can call a good play in the redzone which gives the team a chance. oh well we can always depend on gore and ck to change plays in the huddle to ones which actually work... but in regards to the original question,, the only thing i can think of is a decent third string qb. if that is all that keeps me up at nights , that is not bad
I don't think there was a single player like that available in this year's draft.
Maybe next year?
(This would be funnier if it were not so serious, and so true.)

Haha. Safe to say "personnel" can be ruled out, again, as a major contributing issue in us not obtaining our goal.
Jimmie Ward S/CB & L.J. McCray - Safe to say, he makes it given he covers the slot, nickle, FS and ST role (punt blocker) and pushes Wright/Cox even more. McCray seems to have a legit shot as a K/PR (most productive and experienced of all the rookies)
Carlos Hyde RB - Safe to say, he makes it.
Marcus Martin C - Safe to say, he makes it.
Chris Borland ILB & Shayne Skov ILB - Safe to say, this is going to be an epic battle and one guy will make it for sure (and push Moody off the roster most likely). What is Wilhoites current contract structure?
Bruce Ellington WR - Safe to say, he makes it in a triple role for us (slot, deeper threat and dynamic returner).
Dontae Johnson CB & Kenneth Acker CB - I think Johnson makes it and becomes the Cooper Baalke wished he kept last year. Clearly we are going to play more press coverage and that is Johnson's game. Acker may make the PS.
Kory Faulkner QB - Has a chance at the #3 (PS)
Aaron Lynch OLB/DE (PS) - Also has a shot and the contracts/development of Skuta/Lemonier will come into play.
Caled Ramsey DE (PS) - He looks good but probably a PS at best given the depth ahead of him.
Brandon Thomas OT - Stashed on the PUP/IR
Keith Reaser CB - Stashed on the PUP/IR
Trey Milliard FB - Stashed on the PUP/IR

A couple thoughts to interject:
1. I love Borland and Skov, but why are people ready to give up on Moody? It's not just you; I have seen people bypassing him on roster predictions. Moody was hurt most of last year, but he still projects to be a special teams dynamo and his athleticism is off the charts.
2. Do suspended players count against the roster? Lynch definitely makes it if Aldon doesn't count against us while he is out.
3. Biggest Need: KR/PR James is all but gone and Ellington seems to be the only guy with the potential to return both punts and kicks. This is my biggest worry. I think a "big redzone target" is overvalued. Boldin, Crabtree, VD, Johnson, and McDonald are all big, strong guys. Our offense just doesn't use the "throw-it-up-and-let-him-get-it" play enough for this to be a concern. As was said, we need better redzone plays, not better redzone players.

1. I certainly don't to be honest. The fact that he was training with CK tells me they may have "package" plans for him (i.e. Wilhoite on the running downs and Moody on the passing downs). He could certainly play that hybrid LB/S role.
2. Good question but I don't believe they do so yes, in that case, Lynch could be elevated from the PS to the 53. But will he be active on the 46 over Skuta/Lemonier?
3. Soooooo true!

is no one giving Brandon Lloyd a shot just by having realistic expectations? Or because people can't get over the past?

I don't give him much a shot because it appears he will be no better than 4th on the depth chart. He has no ST ability. He doesn't have much value if he's not playing on offense. Remember, not everyone can be active on gamedays. I'd rather have Ellington active for his return ability, Osgood for his ability as a ST gunner, and I think Patton has the mentality to be a gunner on ST too.

Who does he replace? He isn't the same WR, he sat out 2013. He isn't better or have more upside than a Patton or Ellington, nor does he play STs like Osgood does. Lloyd is not going to make it, unless an injury happens.

Does anyone have the active 46 for the NFCCG? We can compare that one to AB's and "see" how many changes will really be on there. Scary how deep this roster is!

Yes, I recall that list...justl can't remember where! There are a number of guys who will tilt the scale by being good return guys. I hope Elllington can be the first up as he will no doubt make the team and thus save a spot for other guys. Wiley would be nice to keep as well but he really has an uphill battle.
AB--great list! It shows just how competitve this camp is going to be. Skov, Skuta, Borland, Moody, Wilhoite, Flemming, Lemonier, Lynch, Ramsey--all fighting for backup spots...behind 4 all-pros!

I found it! http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/nfl-draft/178462-whats-up-at-cb/page7/
Here is the info:
So, using buck's link (above), it appears the guys who have the most upside/production/experience are:
WR Devon Wiley (minor NFL experience but appears quick/fast/decisive/smooth)
DB L.J. McCray (Very productive college career at 28.13 yard average)
WR Bruce Ellington (997 KR yards but only 16 on PR with a 22.72 average)
Looks like Acker (22.67 average) and Johnson have a little experience as well.
Then there is our own in James (25.1 & 26.75 averages), Hunter and Cox. Wright may have some experience as well.

Beat me to it!
Just came back from Buck's posting. Shouldn't be a problem this year...or not as much.
Maybe next year?
