Ah that's a bummer. They stuck through with Fleming until the very end. Had a nice scouting report on Dax as well. But what can you say? They are getting cut this early b/c the roster is so freaking stacked.

Darius Fleming - LB - Free Agent

49ers waived

LB Darius Fleming
WR DeMarco Sampson
CB Dax Swanson.

Fleming, a 2012 fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame, tore his ACL during rookie minicamp before tearing it again last summer. His career may be in jeopardy.

guess this news goes in this thread.

Absolutely and thank you guys for the continued updates. Bummed about Fleming and Dax. I would have liked to see them compete but let's be real here; we are stacked.
If Fleming can pass a physical I can see him getting on another team's initial 90-man roster. Don't think he has PS eligibility though being a 3rd year player. Can anyone clarify that?

I feel pretty bad for Fleming--two ACL in two years.

Here is the info:

So, using buck's link (above), it appears the guys who have the most upside/production/experience are:
WR Devon Wiley (minor NFL experience but appears quick/fast/decisive/smooth)
DB L.J. McCray (Very productive college career at 28.13 yard average)
WR Bruce Ellington (997 KR yards but only 16 on PR with a 22.72 average)
Looks like Acker (22.67 average) and Johnson have a little experience as well.

Then there is our own in James (25.1 & 26.75 averages), Hunter and Cox. Wright may have some experience as well.

MM, on a video I saw, said that Ellington felt good about his punt return skills. I do not have a link.

How much experience do you have returning punts?

"I have a little bit of experience doing it. I did it in college. I did it a little bit in high school. So, I'm going to be comfortable doing it. I'm ready to come in and do whatever the coaches ask me to do, kick return, punt return, kickoff, punt, whatever it is I'm going to be ready to do."

Just looking at the stats, it looked like you'd only returned three punts in your college career. Is that accurate?

"Yes, sir. That's accurate. [South Carolina WR] Ace Sanders, he was our punt returner when I was playing there. So, you know how he is at that punt returner. He's real good at it. So, I was a backup."

Are you comfortable handling punts?

"Yes, sir."

Interesting UDFA signing.

S / CB / KR LJ McCray Catawba

Height 5117 Weight 210
40 Yrd Dash 4.46
10 Yrd Dash 1.53
Bench 24
Vertical 41
Broad 10´07"
20 Yrd Shuttle 4.07
3-Cone Drill 6.77
*pro day numbers

Kick Off Return Avg.
2013 22.7 Yrds
2012 29.2 Yrds
2011 red shirted for the year
2010 32.5 Yrds

The first thing I asked about was his pro day experience because he put up some really interesting numbers.

"Pro day was a great experience, it was something that I prepared for while down in Texas at Michael Johnsons Performance for a few months. Actually it was just stuff that I was already good at they improved and I just went out and showed that. I was the underdog going in to the pro day so I had to do something to make myself stand out so I feel like I did just that."

I asked him whether he considered himself to be a box safety or a free safety, and what specifically made him more comfortable.

"Well, I consider myself a good mixture of both because I played cornerback. I have the cover skills but I love playing the box because I love being physical. Also I think a great position, like the perfect position that fits me would be the nickel. But I'm great at safety because I can do everything they require. I can come backwards, I can tackle, and I can cover a lot of space form hashes so I consider myself a good mixture of both, free and strong."

I asked him what he thought his best fit in the NFL would be as there seems to be a transition to safeties playing more of a coverage role than a run defense role."
I think that would be good for me. It's not a problem for me to cover space so if that's the big transition I would still love my place as a safety. I would be great at covering and being a cover safety instead of a box guy. You know, that would be great for me and I would love it. There's a lot that I have to learn and I look forward to learning there so I can do whatever they need me to do."

Another good find DeUh. What stood out to me at first was his return skills (yay!). But hell, the nickle, ala Ward, sounds like his competing position. At some point, Wrad will move over to FS (Reid SS) and we'll need a nickle again. Good looking out! You know we have to break down these late picks and UDFA's!
I'll give it a go myself.

QB (3)
Colin Kaepernick
Josh Johnson
Blaine Gabbert

Rationale: We keep three but only two QB's are active on game days so QB Kory Faulkner goes to the PS.

RB (4)
Frank Gore
Kendall Hunter
Marcus Lattimore
Carlos Hyde

Rationale: Good-bye LaMichael James. This is a 4-headed monster now.

FB (1)
Bruce Miller

Rationale: Derek Carrier is the new H-back and can double as a FB should Miller go down.

TE (3)
Vernon Davis
Vance McDonald
Derek Carrier (H-Back)

Rationale: Derek Carrier hits his stride and makes the team in the old Walker, H-back role. We don't need Celek anymore as an OT can be that extra OL as needed like Kilgore last year.

WR (6)
Michael Crabtree (X)
Anquan Boldin (Z)
Stevie Johnson (Y)
Quinton Patton (X,Y,Z)
Kassim Osgood (X)
Bruce Ellington (Y & P/KR)

Rationale: Kassim is still our best gunner on ST and a good, tall, reliable veteran should we have a rash of injuries. Ellington becomes the K/PR specialist as well and knocks James off the team.

OT (3)
Joe Staley
Anthony Davis
Jonathan Martin (OT & G)

Rationale: Originally, I had OT Luke Marquardt making the team but with the addition of QB Josh Johnson, Luke may get pushed down to the PS which is a shame. He's ready IMHO. Staley/Davis seem to battle injuries every year so Martin (NFL experience and versatility) better be ready.

OG (3)
Mike Iupati
Alex Boone (G & OT)
Joe Looney

Rationale: No surprises here but Boone should never have to move to OT d/t injury now.

C (2)
Daniel Kilgore
Marcus Martin (C & OG)

Rationale: Would anyone be surprised if Martin wins the starting C position? Either way, he can play G too. Versatility remains the theme for the OL.

DE (4)
Justin Smith
Ray McDonald
Tank Carradine
Quinton Dial (DE & NT)

Rationale: TJE/Dobbs played very well last year but Dial steps up his game and he has the size and versatility to play both DE and NT should either Dorsey or Williams go down.

NT (2)
Glenn Dorsey
Ian Williams

Rationale: Welcome back Williams. He's our slasher NT.

OLB (5)
Ahmad Brooks
Aldon Smith
Dan Skuta
Corey Lemonier
Aaron Lynch

Rationale: With Carradine and Williams back, Lynch is going to add another dimension of pass rush ability and depth on a rotating front 7. Like Aldon and Lemonier before him, he'll only be worked in on some pass rush downs giving Aldon/Brooks a break and esp. if Aldon gets suspended for X-number of games. He'll also be on ST.

ILB (3)
Patrick Willis
Michael Wilhoite
Chris Borland

Rationale: When Bowman makes it back to full strength, there is going to be a tough cut somewhere. But no surprises here. Moody could fit in here and play a key hybrid S/LB role on passing downs. Skov should head to the PS

CB (7)
Tramaine Brock (#1)
Chris Culliver (#2)
Jimmie Ward (#3 Nickle/Dime/FS)
Eric Wright (#4 Nickle/Dime)(Backs up Brock)
Perrish Cox (#5 Nickle/Dime)(Backs up Culliver)
Darryl Morris (#1 Slot & KR)
Dontae Johnson (Backs up both Brock/Culliver)

Rationale: We carried 10 DB's in the NFCCG. Here, we carry 11 total d/t the growth of Johnson and Baalke learning from letting Cooper go last year to the Chiefs. He wants to be able to play press and he beats out Cook for the outside CB role. That's right, Morris not only wins the slot-role but takes kick-offs next to Ellington.

S (4)
Eric Reid
Antoine Bethea
CJ Spillman
Raymond Ventrone

Rationale: No surprises here. The outside shot here is L.J. McCray d/t his P/KR abilities. He can also play the nickle ala Ward. He has the license to beat out either Spillman or Ventrone who are top-notch ST (only) players.

ST (3)
Phil Dawson
Andy Lee
Kevin McDermott
