2014 Team Needs - Updates

Hat's off, NC...man you nailed it. Have to admit I was really stoked as only 1 CB came off early and then Watkins for WRs. But when the late 20's started, boy our CBs and WRs just disappeared. Ward was virtually off my radar, and I was sure it would be a corner, but all the ones I had seen and liked, just up and disappeared. The argument you made for S was well thot out, and in the end, was exactly where we went. It will be exciting to see how and where Ward is used. I guess our CBs, #1, and # 3-6 are fine with Trent, meaning he feels amongst our #3-6 CBs there is a #2, and now w/ 3 S, we are protected there and also can do all the scenarios you laid out. Have to say, senor, I am impressed.

My take on the draft: When you pick 30th, 31st and 30th, 3 yrs running, it is not an easy task to draft a starter, especially at a real position of need. Ward fit the bill for press coverage, and even tho there were some higher rated LBs, on the board, this was NOT a reach. Question is can he play? Short , but fast(4.38) and great leaper (39 vertical) hopefully will be enough against the big tall WRs. Our CBs and occasionally LBs should be on them anyway. Truly if we get one starter on a team that needs so little on the 53 man squad, then baalke gets high marks. It is a lot easier when you are the Texans, Browns, Raids, etc.

Our draft officially starts tonite when we get what, 5 guys in rds 2-3? That is where the lesser knowns are, and where baalke shows his talent...and we get 5 of these guys, knowing going in, 4 or perhaps 3 will not make the squad. Fans forget there are just so few slots available here, and C, more OL depth, DL depth, WR slot are about it, with C and potentially the slot being the only ones who have a shot at making it. This is where we pray for that unheralded WR slot, that unknown CB. In this draft, deep as it is, I guess hanging onto picks with actually 5 picks tonite...that is cool.

As for signing Wylie, there he is, the slot. Now it is a)can he get open, and b) can he catch. THIS is the guy that kap needs for that 1st and 2nd down quick slant and the RZ or 3rd down and 7. IF the kid has good hands and has some of Welker's traits, he will be the guy kap sees just after the ball is snapped. That is not Vernon's forte, but Anquan sure could qualify. Crabs, Ummm....I am uncertain if he could be a "hot" receiver. Really it is the slot guy we have to have. Good job trent and now we pray his talent is better than advertised.

The fact we could (if comp picks were tradeable) solidify all holes and depth by the end of day 2 and trade everything after away for future picks is pretty great. So much different than dem Balmer days. Not that its gonna happen, but having the option is nice

I think the best part about Ward is that he can play SS, FS, slot, nickle/corner AND outside CB (if needed). He now can play in our defense 60% of the time while bulking up and becoming the other FS of the future next to Reid. And if Reid or Bethea go down, do you feel better about him back there over Spillman and Dahl? Hell yeah you do!

Harbaugh basically said in an interview that it's Brock and Culliver as the starting CB's. With Ward now competing with Wright and Cox at the nickel, he just made our depth/competition that much stronger (#3-#6). At the same time, he does NOT affect the competition at outside CB. Wright, Cox, Cook, Swanson and Morris will continue to compete there along with whoever we draft today. Plus Ward also blocked several punts in his career and plays to the equivalent size of a 6'4" CB. He's a guy that plays MUCH bigger than he is. Now he'll be slowly worked into his body, nutrition, weight room work, training, etc. He is our present AND future! With Ward, you can also bring the blitz. Imagine that. Epic pick IMHO!

I'm VERY curious now to see what KIND of CB/WR we'll nab. Is it going to be the bigger, more physical type or the slippery, speedy-type? We could use both!

The 49ers currently have picks 56 (2nd), 61 (2nd), 77 (3rd), 94 (3rd) and 100 (3rd).

Wide receivers:
* Marqise Lee, USC - Quick, smooth route runner looked great in 2012, battled injuries last year.
* Allen Robinson, Penn State - Good size and length but not as fast as some of the other options.
* Cody Latimer, Indiana - Powerfully built junior with very good hands. Coming off foot injury.
* Jordan Matthews, Vanderbilt - Prolific pass catcher in SEC; many catches were on screens, short routes.
* Donte Moncrief, Ole Miss - He may be the best athlete of the group; was inconsistent last year.
* Davante Adams, Fresno State - FBS' leader in Tds and receptions last year. Great leaper, not fast.
* Jarvis Landry, LSU - Physical, determined pass catcher but not athletic or fast
* Bruce Ellington, South Carolina - Played point guard for Gamecocks. Physical, tough but lacks size.
* Martavis Bryant, Clemson - Tall, long-limbed down-field threat in the mold, at least, of Randy Moss.
* Paul Richardson, Colorado - Fast, downfield threat but weighs only 172 pounds.

Cornerbacks:
* Philip Gaines, Rice - Surprised with an extremely fast 4.31-second 40 at combine. Has good, not great size.
* Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Nebraska - One of several tall, big-bodied cornerbacks who could catch Baalke's eye.
* Keith McGill, Utah - Another massive cornerback in the mold of Richard Sherman, other press specialists.
* Jaylen Watkins, Florida - Older brother of Clemson WR Sammy Watkins; versatile member of Gators secondary.
* Pierre Desir, Lindenwood - Tall, long-limbed but played at small school. Held his own at Senior Bowl.
* Marcus Roberson, Florida - Had alcohol arrest in 2011 and suspended a game in 2013.
* Walt Aikens, Liberty - Another 6-1, 200-plus pound cornerback who can play press coverage.
* Bashaud Breeland, Clemson - Tall and long-limbed. Had solid career at Clemson; burned deep vs. FSU.
* Rashaad Reynolds, Oregon State - Former wrestler and team leader. Physique does not stand out.

A lot of unheralded talent in rds 2-3 and we got 5 picks, on a team with 43 guys already as locks, and we were in NFCC last season, our 3rd in a row. Amazing we could be looking at 2nd tier talent with FIVE picks. All we have to do is get lucky to get a couple stars, and this draft would be a definite success. I assume we will take a C somewhere in here(but he better have the ability to start this yr or next) and a Qb. The rest we can blow on a couple DBs and a WR or two. The WR slot just added by trent has terrific potential to be that slot receiver we needed so badly. It will be some time before we know, but man would that be great to have a welker like guy for kap's new short passing game.

I'm betting on the bigger, redzone target type WR. Competition for Baldwin. Of course, Baalke will have some surprises for us today!

i would not mind if they drafted the gay guy in day 3.with the nice depth we already have it would not hurt us to take a chance in my opinion

Agreed, in that we'll need a replacement for Crabtree/Boldin eventually and CK loves to throw OVER (and sometimes, through) DB's. So ideally, you'd want a H-W-S guy with a huge catching radius and leaping ability...to compete with Baldwin in this manner and become the heir apparent.

Thank you, sir. I did see that before, but I thought doc was talking about somebody Baalke signed yesterday. In retrospect, that doesn't seem very likely.

Already updated the OP baby! Baalke...he just rules!

WR Stevie Johnson - 6'2" 210 and runs a 4.45 (Revis & Dick-Shaker) for a conditional 4th/3rd round pick in 2015. 3 straight seasons of 1,000. Cap numbers are $3.925M(14), $6.025M(15), and $6.125M(16).

Our most expensive WR makes $6M. To put this into perspective, Harvin will count $12.5M against the Hawks cap next year.
