We would be fine without Alex. This system isn't a high areal assault. We don't have a Brees, Manning, Brady or Rodgers in Alex. He isn't a elite, or great QB, he is still average IMO. He did win the playoff game, so I give him credit for that. But we would be fine without Alex. Kaep or Johnson would work fine in Harbaugh's system.
Alex had 7 s**tty seasons, compared to 1 good one, I don't trust Alex is the answer, long term or short term. He scares the hell out of me when he goes back to throw the ball. We need a elite QB some point down the road to be a SB team year in and year out. Our defense kept us in games and won games, not the offense.
The players we couldn't replace in a pinch would be Akers, Lee, Willis, Bowman, J.Smith, Aldon, Brooks and Ginn on returns.

Still can't believe you think even an average QB is easy to find. I would argue that Smith is a good QB but even if he is average that is better than most NFL QBs. Take two QBs per team and subtract the backups, then rank Smith on the list of starters and he would be in the top half (even if average) so he is among the top 15 of 60 QBs in football...but anyone could replace him, no big deal.
Why hasn't Harbaugh cut him to save money after signing Johnson...who obviously is just as good as Smith. They have Johnson and CK so why are they wasting money on this guy...must be really dumb talent evaluators.

Has anyone said Goldson? Our defense would be a helluva lot different if Spillman or Robinson saw extended time at FS in '12.

Chances are they would have been. Luckily they hit one one of the biggest draft wins of all time.
Much greater chance that if it happened to the 9ers they would just lose a bunch more games.

I have to agree with everyone that threw Akers in the mix. He was money for us.

JTO, Hill, Rattay, T. Smith...so many QBs were better than Alex Smith and we let them leave and go on to lead teams to super bowls...damn! After all, it's so easy to find good QBs...hey, look on the ground over their...isn't that an elite QB? Quick! Sign him!

Was Smith notably better than all of these guys before Jim Harbaugh?

Yes, or they would still be here and Smith would be gone. Hill was my favorite but just did not have the upside Smith has...loved his leadership.
Smith was always considered talented just not progressing as people thought he should. Now he is and the talent will take care of the rest. None of these other guys held a candle to Smith athletically.

Idk, I think Smiths play this year easily transcended the past play of the aforementioned group of QBs but prior to this year it was all still just potential. His actual play before this season left a lot to be desired and we were all still waiting or him to put it together. I still feel like I'm waiting for him to put it together.
This is just my opinion but i am not confident in Alex to build a lead. I don't think he is the kind of QB who can step on a teams throat an im waiting fr that. I also think he still struggles getting through his progression, speofically versus the blitz. I know he has a good rating vs. the blitz but I see him either hitting his 1st read if it's a good call against the specific blitz an if the 1st read isn't open he eats a sack. I don't think it's a coincidence that teams send huge blitzes at us but not a team such as GB who has a much worse OL.
Let me get this straight, with the qualities Alex does have, I think he can win a super bowl on a team such as ours, with an elite D and ST as well as a creative running game. He has the clutch factor, so long as you keep him within a score or two f the other team, we always have a chance. I just don't think it's a good idea to rely on the D keeping you close and to rely on Alex to always come up with that high pressure drive for the win. Long term I just feel like tha luck will catch up to you.

Can't fairly make this assessment til we get Smith some real weapons to threaten defenses... and surprise!... that was clearly our goal this offseason. Teams blitz us so heavily because the D can generally get to Alex in under 3 seconds... and we don't have the weapons to get quick separation.. until perhaps now.

The one and only time we needed Alex to help bring us back from multiple scores? He did... so if you should be swayed to either side? It should be the successful one, no?

Are you seriously trying to imply that we won the Eagles game because of Frank Gore alone?
I'd think long and hard about the answer...
