Losing Alex Smith might be an upgrade

It might be, it might not be. We have unknowns as backups for Alex, so really, no one could possibly know for sure.

I think our team is deep enough that one injury will be easy to overcome.....unless the injury happens to Andy Lee or David Akers.

Even if Lee or Akers drop out, our team is so resourceful they will find someone useful to fill in.
Justin Smith without a doubt. There is no one on the bench right now that could replace him and even remotely play up to his level.

I would like to think someone could rise to the occasion if something happened to him.

After Smith. I think Justin Smith would be tough to replace, so would Willis.

agree

this, except I'd replace Willis with Aldon Smith.

Hater or not, if he went down, so would our chances. Anyone who says Kap could come in with no substantial dropoff is completely fooling themselves.

Agreed. Kap will get his time, but for now Alex is the leader.

Could be said of any player of course...just ask Wally Pipp.
Just my opinion, but the drop off from Justin Smith(arguably the best defensive player in the league last year) to RJF(solid backup, depth guy) is much greater than the dropoff between Alex Smith to CK.

We're a team that wins by playing great D and ST while limiting turnovers on offense.

Which is one reason why It seems Kaep wouldn't be an upgrade, and might just be a big problem. Dude's slow windup and propensity to try to gun it into tight spots plus the fact that he has zero NFL experience has turnovers written all over it.

With the way the team plays defense and tries to control field position it even 5-10 more turnovers would cost the team a bunch of wins.

All that is assuming that Kaep can actually play, and isn't a bust of some kind. Nobody knows if that is the case because he didn't play last season. When he did play, it was obvious (pre-season) that he had a long way to go.
I'm not even sure Kap is going to be the back up.

Agree! People tend to under rate the lack of mistakes by Smith. JTO ring a bell?

Kaep does NOT have a long motion. He has an awkward delivery but it is actually very quick. Kaep is a mystery, you're right, but I trust Harbaugh and Roman to draw up game plans that help our QB as much as possible. They proved last year they can gameplan creatively and make he QBs job easier. I don't think it's possible to replace Justin smiths play no matter how creative you get.
