BTW, one day, Aldon Smith and NaVorro Bowman are going to want to get paid too. Don't forget about that.

Too soon to let Brooks walk, move over Haralson, draft a rookie and use that money to extend Bowman on the cheap (2 more years 18 million, plus current contract)?

Brooks is good, but he's not a core player in my opinion. The run D is really the front 3 and Willis and Bowman.

Brooks is one of the least important players on a front seven of super stars. But he will definitely be missed.

I honestly don't even want to THINK about Bowman and Aldon's contracts fitting in the future, it makes my head hurt.

.....oh and I guess Dwayne Bowe.

There's our 30 million!!!

Everyone of those players were major contributors to our 13 and....err I mean 14-4 record and NEED to be brought back.

Good luck with that. Half of those guys are going to want nearly 10 million a year.

Smith will resign. Like him or not, we will resign him and we should play hardball with his contract because no other team is going to break down our door trying to sign him to a big contract. 6-8 million. Nearly guaranteed to resign.
Rogers is going to get a reality check, before he gets a paycheck. Cornerback used to be the most underpaid position in the game. Now it's the most overpaid. He might not like it, and another stupid team might throw money at him, but we're not going to break the bank for him at his age. 5-7 million. 70% chance he resigns.
Snyder should get something similar to what he is making now, if not, I think we are willing to pay a little more. A very valuable player to our team, and I think he wants to be here. 2-3 million. 80% chance he resigns.
Ahmad Brooks is going to make a lot of money this off-season. He has tons of awesome film, and he's going to want to get paid. Someone will likely put up a big offer for him, because he is still young, he's "got his stinking mind right" and he is entering his prime. With Aldon Smith, I don't think it would be wise to pay an arm and a leg for another OLB. If he somehow stays, he will have to except a LOT less money. Its a tough loss, but that's the way it is in the NFL. 4-9 million. 20% chance he resigns.
Josh Morgan was hurt, so he should be fairly easy to bring back for another year. Maybe we sign him long-term. Not sure how we are going to pay him, but he will definitely be back. 2-3 million. 95% chance he resigns.
Tedd Ginn is the toughest one of them all to guess. We NEED his ability to catch the ball on special teams, and his good return ability is only a bonus. He is also nice to have as an extra receiver and deep threat. The question is, "Is he MORE valuable than Rogers, Brooks, Goldson or a free agent WR?" The money spent to keep him, means less money to sign someone else. 2-4 million. 50% chance he resigns.
Larry Grant. I don't know. 1-2 million. 50% chance he resigns?
Dashon Goldson wants to get paid also, like Ahmad Brooks. There is no doubt about that, because he refused a reasonable offer last off-season. We will probably franchise him instead of Brooks because its better to have talent spread around the field, rather than focused at OLB. 6-7 million. 80% chance he is back.

Dwayne Bowe. 8-10 million? I don't think we are going to pay a glut of money for him. We have already set a standard that we don't have to overpay for free agents in order to obtain very talented free agents. This would throw a monkey wrench into our team's future.

Keeping out Bowe. At the lowest end, they will cost around 28 million to resign. At the high end, they will cost around 43 million to resign. These numbers average out to 35.5 million, which we don't have. This is why we are going to unfortunately have to say "good buy" to Brooks. If we are lucky, we will only lose Brooks, although I have a feeling we might not be able to keep Rogers either.
Even if we lose both Rogers and Brooks, fitting a high powered free agent like Bowe into this equation is pure fantasy.

I think the best case scenario, in the land of reality, is that we only lose Brooks and Ginn. I would rather that happen than Brooks and Rogers. We might be able to scrape under the cap by only losing Brooks and Ginn.

BTW, one day, Aldon Smith and NaVorro Bowman are going to want to get paid too. Don't forget about that.

agree with most of this, some of these guys are going to leave for greener pa$tures elsewhere, if you know what I mean. I think Baalke gets creative with the cap and we lose some guys so we can afford 1 or 2 decent FA's though.

AB mentioned that we might be able to get more out of the cap, and bring it up to 40. If we do that, we might be able to sign Rogers and Ginn, and MAYBE a free agent. I still think Brooks walks though, because we have to think about the future. We can't lock up long-term money into another OLB if we already have a budding super star with Aldon.

Brooks is going to walk IMO and I think Ginn gets paid by someone too. I want to see us re-sign Snyder, finding another cheap and starter calibre RG is going to be a pain in the ass.

John Clayton said we are going to have about 40M in salary cap room.
Quote:

The 2011 playoff teams in good shape are the Denver Broncos ($50.735 million of cap room), San Francisco 49ers ($39.33 million), Atlanta Falcons ($30.6 million) and New England Patriots ($20 million).

That's great news.

Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to keep Ahmad Brooks, he is transforming into a special player. But the chances of him somehow slipping under the radar during free agency are nil. His agent will do his research, and demand a HUGE contract, and don't be surprised if some team out there doesn't cave in quickly.

Not sure what you mean by "core", but Ahmad Brooks played on 944 out of 1007 defensive snaps last year--over 93% of the defensive snaps.
In comparison, NaVorro Bowman played on 989 snaps, and Justin Smith on 924 snaps.

If the outside linebackers do not set the edge, force the runners back into the center of the field, the run defense is not going to be that good.
Our run defense was great. I think that we can conclude that Brooks played a major role in our run defense.

Ahmad Brooks was also among the leading tacklers on the team with 50 tackles.

In my estimation, he was a core player last year.

I hope we can resign him.

Found this interesting on the Saints MB, regarding Marques Colston and the 49ers.

http://saintsreport.com/forums/f2/last-weeks-mike-d-article-maybe-colston-49ers-223488/

Agent sources tell me that if the Saints can't come to terms on a new deal before free agency starts that the San Francisco 49ers will make a huge money play to acquire him....and high-ranking members of the 49er organization feel as though Colston will fit their system due to his size and ability to outmuscle defenders for the football.

of course i was just riding on your coat tails oakland! It was just kind of funny to watch people meltdown when the niners follow thier plan and stay low under the radar.i really do not think that will change. i do see the need and want to sign a top free agent wide out but we got our own to take care of and i see no reason why we can not pick up a nice wide out in day two or three of free agency.i should like to think that our fan base will have more patience this year with the niners in free agency after last year and not freak out if they do not throw themselves in right away on the first day

i am pretty sure that ginn is gone and i am pretty postive we can draft a wide out along with a corner back who can return punts and kicks. I like ginn but i think we can find a rookie who can be a better pass catcher than ginn and just as good in returning kicks and punts.
