FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

KC, Tampa Bay and Cincy got big bank to play with, even after bringing back some of their top free agents. Anyone want to start taking bets on which of those three teams will give the most ridiculous contract offer to a free agent?

Peyton --> KC ?

Probably. Peyton with Bowe/Baldwin/Moeaki/Charles offense is friggin explosive IMO, and on defense they are getting Eric Berry back and have Hali. Then you could throw some money at other guys to fill out your defense and have one heck of a team.

It cracks me up that you guys would suggest that Kansas City needs an upgrade at QB, yet if someone said that the 49ers needed one, you guys have a hissy fit.

Just hilarious to me. Such a double standard on NT.

Not really. Nobody said they NEEDED one, just seems like they can pretty easily afford it.

Hopeful Smith hater is hopeful

Niners are on the short list of teams to speculate about because we're consistent QB play away from becoming fully elite. However it's hard to imagine Harbaugh, after clearly stating he wants Smith back and then asking him to caddy for him at the AT&T, would kick him to the curb.

Harbaugh did the same kind of marketing for Smith last year and nobody believed it . . . until it actually happened.

Peyton Manning won't be a 49er.
Harbaugh said the niners would add the best players possible and let them compete in camp for the starting job. Harbaugh did NOT promise the starting job to Alex. He wants Alex to comeback nd compete for the job in camp. I agree that it unlikely that the niners sign manning but if he is cleared by the niners doctors then it should at least be considered. Niners passing offense was ranked 29th in the league while our redzone offense was WORST in the nfl.

It's not like the niners are gonna hand Alex a big $$$$ contract that would prevent them from adding competition at qb.

I never said we shouldn't sign Manning(although I worry that the health+financial risk is too great and he's a short term solution), but the fact of the matter is anyone who can read the tea leaves can see they most likely won't. If you're hoping otherwise, most likely you're just pissing in the wind dude. Plus Peyton can't even throw far yet, he still isn't allowed to throw past 25 yards and Mike Lombardi said his velocity is way down. The nerve in his arm may not regenerate which would turn him into Shaun Hill more or less, if that. It sucks because Peyton has been 1 of my favorite players not on the 9ers but I don't think he'll come back as the same player, and I highly doubt he'll be a 9er.

Are you sure about that? I think momentum is building for exactly that.
Harbaugh publicly expressed his love for Alex last offseason and even visited Alex and his wife in the hospital after their kid was born. Yet we only offered him a 1 year deal .

Yeah and he then had the best season of his career, and now he and Harbaugh are going to big golf events together. Your point? I don't see why Jim wouldn't try to re-sign him. At this point Alex is a sure thing for him and he's his guy at the moment.
The best season of his career = only 17 passing touchdowns ( despite the SF defense leading the nfl in turnovers) a 29th ranked passing offense and a redzone offense that was so bad that no team was worse then the Niners.

I never said the niners wouldn't try to resign Alex. He's just not gonna get a big contract so him resigning won't prevent the niners from adding a veteran qb to compete for the starting job.

Alex a sure thing? That's funny. You must have missed the niners going 1 for 13 on 3rd down in our NFC championship loss.
Grant Cohn put together a list of Smith's top 5 strengths and weaknesses.

The following two weaknesses will keep his price tag down despite Harbaugh playing golf with Alex.

Field vision. The first play of the Harbowl encapsulates this issue for Smith. His primary read was Vernon Davis in the flat. He was open. But, so was Delanie Walker sprinting deep down the middle of the field uncovered. Smith didn't see Walker because he wasn't looking at the middle of the field – he was focused on his primary read down in the right flat. He completed the pass to Davis for a three-yard gain instead of to Walker for a touchdown. In Smith's mind, he was throwing to Davis all the way unless he wasn't open. The best quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Drew Brees) don't think that way. They look at the field and quickly identify how to make the most out of each play.

Third down. You can almost read his thoughts as he lines up in shotgun on third down and long – I will not throw an interception on this play. He usually doesn't even throw passes that cross the first-down marker. He checks down to Gore or Davis or Crabtree and asks them to break tackles. Or he throws the ball away or he takes the sack. Eli Manning can look left, right, then left again, manipulate the safeties, create a little window and throw a 20-yard rope on third and long. He does this routinely. Smith will never do this. He doesn't have the arm-strength or the temperament. For the Niners offense to improve on third down they have to get better receivers and Greg Roman needs to call better plays, and Smith needs to be more adventurous.

lol You are so blinded by your dislike of AS that nothing he does will ever good enough. Leading 2 epic comebacks in the last 4 minutes of a game vs one of the best QBs in the NFL won't be good enough. Tying the franchise record for fewest TOs in a season won't be good enough. Getting to within 2 fumbles of the superbowl in his first year with a new coach and no offseason won't be good enough. A passer rating over 90 won't be good enough. 13 wins in a season won't be good enough. If he eventually wins a superbowl or throws 30 TDs, that won't be good enough. You will always fantasize over some other QB who does 1 or 2 things better than Alex even if they aren't attainable, or damaged goods who have had a good enough career that it makes you believe you can convince all your detractors on this message board to get rid of the guy you can't stand.

It's always been this way, you've always been Anti-Smith. I have been posting here long enough to know it. You blamed him for getting a serious injury, you blamed him for horrendous coaches getting fired and that his poor performance was the reason they were getting fired, not their poor coaching the reason he didn't perform to his potential or give him the benefit of the doubt. You've always championed his adversaries even when it meant making a fuss over a joker like JT O'sullivan. When one of these players would have their 1 good game before other teams figured them out you would pump them up and say "SEE! There is no way Alexis Smurf could ever dream to do THAT"-just point to Troy Smith's first game vs the Broncos last year in London. Then when said player eventually fails, you never admit that you were wrong, you just move on to the next joker, semi decent prospect, washed up, or damaged goods player. It eventually leads to a serious loss of credibility after being proven wrong over and over again. Oh well, keep making yourself look like this, it's not my problem.
edit: double post.

Interesting point from Maiocco . . .

http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/niners-talk/post/49ers-Mailbag-II-Is-30-million-in-cap-sp?blockID=650518&feedID=2539

The 49ers should have plenty of cap space to do everything they need to accomplish this offseason. After all, last year the 49ers signed Ray McDonald, Donte Whitner, Jonathan Goodwin and David Akers to multi-year contracts. The combined first-year cap figures of those deals was $8.65 million.

Remember, the first-year cap value of multi-year contracts is typically far below the average annual salary.
WTF are you talking about? I never made a "fuss" over JT O'sullivan etc.

The fact remains that the Niners passing offense was terrible this season. While our redzone offense was pathetic. If you choose to believe that Alex had nothing to do with it (or very little) then good for you.

The two fumbles against the Giants were enough to sink us because Alex went back to his old habits of killing drives by missing open receivers and throwing poor passes on 3rd downs.Seriously, 1 for 13 on 3rd down in championship game at home?

I expect the Niners to resign Alex Smith. It just won't be a huge contract and the Niners will still be able to go out and sign a veteran qb to compete with Alex.
