The Sneior Bowl isnt the only place to watch these guys, I dont think its as abig of a deal as some people are making it out to be. Just another reason to complain

Especially for QB's.

NOTE, this is only point to show how little the Senior Bowls means in evaluating QB's: Let's take Alex Smith and allow him to practice ONLY one week with players he knows nothing about and see if his throws are on target. People on this site make excuses about chemistry for him with receivers he spends years with. Harbaugh will learn more about Qb's from film and pro days than this or the combine.

While a good point, I still do think that it does mean something if a QB does shine during the senior bowl.

NFL coaching veterans Sean Payton of the Saints and Ken Whisenhunt of the Cardinals are in the Senior Bowl house. So are first-timer coaches Jason Garrett of the Cowboys and Hue Jackson of the Raiders.

Same goes for at least two defensive coordinators: ex-49ers DC Greg Manusky of the Chargers and ex-Raiders DC Rob Ryan of the Cowboys.

Entire coaching staffs are in Mobile, Ala. this week, as well, including the semi-assembled Raiders and Cowboys.

Just don't come expecting new 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and his new coaching staff. They stayed behind in Santa Clara while a big chunk of the league converged in Mobile, Ala. for this week's NFL-run all-star game.

So, is this a good or a bad thing?

New 49ers general manager Trent Baalke says this is the first day of work for Harbaugh's staff, which has come together the past two weeks. The feeling is they could get a lot more done at the office in terms of breaking down film and working on schemes than flying to Mobile for three or four days of practice.

Baalke is the one running the draft -- granted, with input from Harbaugh, coaches and an entire personnel department -- and he's the lead dog in a scout-heavy contingent of 49ers. He's the one with contractual control of the 53-man roster, and he's the one in charge of the draft. He's the one who absolutely must be here.

Still, more than a few NFL assistant coaches and scouts I spoke with today were surprised Harbaugh and his staff didn't make the trip. He's been out of the NFL since 2004. Most of his staff spent last season at Stanford.

With all the CBA uncertainty, there is a very real chance they will have nothing but time to sit around and work on film and scheme.

On the flip side, some think this shows Harbaugh trusts Baalke -- several have told me Baalke and Harbaugh think a lot alike. Harbaugh said Friday part of team-building his gaining trust between, among others, the coach and GM.

By leaving Baalke alone to do his job this week, Harbaugh appears to be showing he trusts Baalke. That's something Mike Singletary didn't do when things went bad last season.

On Tuesday, we'll take a look at the quarterbacks here at the Senior Bowl, most whom will be of great interest if the 49ers wait a few rounds draft an arm of the future.

Ouch. Wow...

can we ban this guy already please? His non stop b***hing and complaining really brings down the forum. I seriously doubt he is even a 49er fan.

Even the article confirms it. Entire coaching staffs are there. And other teams really question the move big time. Not just me.

Not ALL the teams have entire coaching staffs are there. Plus Nolan and Singletary were there, does that mean anything. As the saying goes-there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Plus if you also read one of the articles, Jimmy Johnson said it himself-The talent evaluator needs to be there (Baalke) more than the coach, because coaches sometimes fall too much in love with a player, which is what I have said. In one of the blogs it said Baalke kept a very low key as evaluated the talent. I like that, not revealing who interest or impresses you. It also said that he plans to be there at the combine.

SD you truly are not thinking. He needs to evaluate the talent on the team with input from his staff to see where they be going in the draft, free agancy or trades. Mark my words, next year he will get more involve, but he needs to see what the team has. Man some people are so near sighted and blind as a bat.

Sorry guys, we're going 2-14 next season now, just cause Harbaugh didn't make the trip to Mobile

Oh no, now you started it. Bring on the doom and gloom!

Doom? No, we will get Luck! Hahaha See how ridiculous this thread is...
Cause everybody else does it we gotta copy.

Everybody was subscribing to the same scouting report at one time...except Walsh and Dallas.

When you monkey see monkey do...all you will become is a monkey.

And since we have several potential key players, depending on scheme and the coaches' points of view, who are eligible for free agency, it may be much more important to determine who we may wish to keep and how hard we try to keep them despite the uncertainties of the CBA. And to echo the poster above, it would be nice to better understand the players on the roster already and under contract to determine what type of players we do need given the schemes and the players on board.

now lets get some hookers a blow

Why is Harbaugh not going to the Senior Bowl?

Time managment.

He probably hasn't spent much time evaluation current NFL QB's (pending FA's and availabe QB on trade block)

So he's probably putting together a list. Best availabe FA QB's

QB through trade and what we are willing to offer to aquire them.

Then he can evaluate tape on Senior Bowl and focus on Pro Days of QB's he targets and put together a master list of all 3 options.

Just start the Fire Harbaugh thread now. With you it is inevitable. Get your pitchfork and lynch mob ready lets get this guy fired!

www.fireharbaugh.com here we come.

No. I like Harbaugh and think he is the right HC. But this is a drastic error. There is no reason for him not to be there. It should be important to him and Baalke both that he be there. There are first time coaches there so it's no excuse.

A drastic error? Missing four days of practice (at least in person) is really going to have an extreme negative impact on the draft? I can understand questioning the move, but to characterize Harbaugh's absence in Mobile as a "drastic error" is sofa king absurd it borders on hysteria.
What is wrong with some of you guys? You give San Diego a bad time because he brings up points or info that is relevant to the discussion. This is good. You may not agree with his conclusion, but show him some respect as a fellow fan. We do not all see the world the same way. If we all did, we'd all want to marry the same woman (boy, you guys are going to jump all over that comment).
