I wouldn't mind keeping him, but it's just going to be up to the next guy. I think mike Johnson will be a good OC in the league.
If I was the next coach, id tell Johnson to stick around since he knows the players. It would help the transition.

he has done a pretty good job in those 7 games. Everyone has to start somewhere. If everyone had that mentality there wouldn't even be an OC position.

Here's Alex Smith's QB Ratings this season:
@Seattle - 52.5
New Orleans- 82.2
@Kansas City- 68.8
@Atlanta- 65.6
Philadelphia- 92.8
Oakland- 87.4
@Carolina- 87.4
Seattle- 130.9
Take out the first three games with Jimmy Raye as the O.C, and here's his new QB Rating:
completion %: 58.667 (88/150)
yards: 1077
yards/attempt: 7.18
TD: 10
INT: 4
QBR: 92.0
Even if we get rid of Alex, I hope we keep MJ who's able to help his quarterback; and definitely has one of the best first drive pre-planned playcalls of any OC we've had in years. We're consistently scoring on the first drive and this helps us out throughout the game (unless Sing goes on his conservative bulls**t).
Yesterday, until the second half, we saw for the first time what MJ is able to construct as an OC. He was able to open up the entire playbook with no restrictions and the results speak for themselves.
So I am in the group that says I need to see some more but what we have seen so far from Johnson has been very good given the fact that Singletary has surely placed some restrictions on him.
BTW, with a QB rating of 92, Alex Smith would be in the top 10 QBs in the league.
wow... thats some interesting stuff. I agree I would like to see what he can do given free reign to run the offense how he see's fit. I think Sing has loosened up a little bit... only because of Gore's inj and his job is on the line, but I think MJ still has that feeling of someone watching his every move.
It will be interesting to see how the offense and AS play to finish out the season.
Even more interesting is the QB rating jump from Jimmy Raye. Alex Smith went from a QB with a 66.23 QB rating under Raye, to a 92 QB rating (slightly above Peyton Manning's current QB rating?) under MJ, even though his offense has been watered down weekly by Singletary, rather than watered down because of JR.
Few things to note:
1. The teams played under Jimmy Raye's OC term were a little tougher on D, but not that much greater on pass D.
2. Although I am too busy with finals to look it up, it seems like the big plays, 20+ yard and 40+ yard gains have come much, much more often under MJ.
3. Jimmy Raye sucks.

The packer game wasn't poorly called game but rather Troy Smith just sucked that much along with the rest of the team. The execution was horrible, but did you expect anything different? West coast teams that travel to the east coast for the early game never play well. Gotta love the east coast bias. Go Goodell

As long as we get a GOOD GOOD really GOOD offensive minded head coach, i don't care who is OC. If we get a offensive minded head coach, the we'll need a good defensive coordinator.
just get me a new head coach.

I agree with most on here for the following reasons:
- Alex has looked great under MJ
- Troy Smith, a back-up who only knew a handful of plays passed for 356 yards under MJ
- 5 different receivers had over 60 yards receiving for the 1st time in history
- Opening drives that have lead to scores the majority of the time
- Young and ambitious and willing to learn
So besides that TB game
, he has done a great job at calling plays and keep in mind, he is being handcuffed by another coaches playbook and a head coach with a conservative mentality.
At the same time, I would like to see 4 QTRS of good play calling and a balanced, yet aggressive attack like we saw vs SEA until the defense completely took over that game for us.
So we'll see how it goes as we enter some MUST WIN (a term used every week it seems, but for real this time) games down the stretch

He has done ok. The plays are better. But, we can't take another risk that he will pan out and be the next great OC. We need to get an established guy in here that has been around the block.
Plus, if we get a new coach, he will probably want to bring in his own staff.

What we have seen from MJ is that both Troy and Alex have raised their games under his game plan. So while Troy quickly hit his ceiling due to his lack of knowledge of the overall play book, Alex Smith has a QB rating 102 in his past three games under MJ. That number is exceeded only by Aaron Rodgers @ 111 and Brady @ 141.
It is also important to recognize that the loss of Frank Gore has helped us see both the nature of a part of the problem with the offense, and the talent of the players on the team. That loss forced Singletary to go outside his comfort zone and allow MJ to put more of his ability on display...and that ability has looked good.
What we should take from that is that Mike Johnson has the ability to create an effective game plan that works WITH the QB and makes them both better.
So whether the new HC keeps Mike Johnson or not is strictly up to the new HC but from what we have seen from Johnson since Gore is impressive enough to want to see more.

I think MJ has a lot of potential as an OC...if a new coach comes in (hopefully), they may want to bring their own guy in...that happens a lot, especially w/coordinators. If Singletary stays, he'll keep MJ in that role...so, kinda depends on what happens w/head coach position.
