Lulz vd dat you?
Hell no do I regret the 9ers drafting him.

Not only is he a mismatch all over the field but he can block too.
Ok, then tell me who the team should have drafted #6 overall. Marcedes lewis went 28th to Jax, or are you simply suggesting he should have been #6?

But Krizay says his speed doesn't translate to the field
I only regret pick #29 in 2008.

A high T.E. is a safe pick.

You get a great blocker and and a great receiver.

hindsight? Anyone looking past physical attributes could see drafting a TE that high was a waste. The TE position is the easiest position to fill and get production. See Delanie yesterday or any other big slow loaf like Witten/Celek/ and the likes.

I still don't see where his speed and strength translate to the football field. I really use to love the whole 5 guys to bring him down myth. To see him go down by 1 guy nearly every time. Without nary a broken tackle.

AJ Hawk and Michael Huff were the 2 picks next to Vernon. I can make the same case with those positions. They don't traditionally hold top 10 value, and you can find quality guys scattered thru out the draft.

One of those 3 players ended up being an elite player at their position and you guys should just be happy that we picked that guy.

Hali Ngata. It's mostly hindsight and let's not forget that he went to a defense that finished in the top 6 all but one year since 2000.

I still do. Especially since I wanted Marcedes Lewis instead. Logic being that #7 is just too high for any TE. I wanted a TE, and I thought Vernon would be better, but I just thought you get basically the same services from a guy like Marcedes with our late 1st round pick.

With the 1.7 pick I wanted AJ Hawk, glad he was not there, because my 2nd choice was Ngata.

I hope this is a lesson learned for this franchise, top 10 is too high for a TE. Now I am not even sure that Vernon is even better than Marcedes(who has become quite a good blocker also)

No offense man, but all the bad picks we have had over the years and your debating one of the few good ones? We can debate the woulda, coulda, shoulda's all night but Vernon is a great player and his freak abilities make him a far more dangerous threat than M. Lewis ever could be. Get Vernon a solid quarterback, and this conversation becomes moot.

No offense taken. If you pay attention to my argument this is not your typical we shoulda drafted this guy or that guy thread. I am really not saying any of the sort.

I have said Vernon Davis is one of my Favorite Niners and I love the player he is turning out to be.

The heart of my argument is questioning the TE position, and if it is EVER ok to draft one that high.

Obviously the Niners missed tons of 1st round picks, and this is one of the success stories.

My point is even with Vernon being as good as is he is, the TE spot only helps teams win to a point, coupled with the fact that the Production and Contribution between 2nd tier TE's and Elite TE's is negligible.

I am one of the few who would never draft TE that high, and Vernon Davis challenged this philosophy, but ultimately has also validated that it is a pretty good policy to stick to

I don't regret drafting him. He is over-rated by many on this board, but he is a good player who will likely go to the Pro Bowl a couple more times in his career based on the balls he does catch and the time he does outrun a defender for a deep pass.

I just wish he was much better running under routes and making hot reads to help his QB on blitz situations (things a true HOF TE MUST do...and didn't comment so many penalties.

Vernon Davis does a lot of the very visible things very well but many of the less visible things he should do, he does not do all that well.

Outside of Hali Ngata there's no one you can justify taking over Vernon Davis. Based on our needs that year it wasn't a very good draft class. It was a weak receiver class, and that's what we wanted to upgrade that year. There just wasn't many options so we went went the freak tight end.

I don't know how anyone can say it was the wrong pick. The guy's an elite tight end and will be part of our organization for the a long time.

I would gladly trade Vernon Davis for Lewis and Ngata...in a second.

I would too IMO Lewis and Walker would be fine and Ngata would help our D so much
Davis has turned into a play making receiver and can be a game changer. Most teams have these play making receivers at the WR position. However, ours plays TE. To add to his value he is also one of the best blocking TEs in the league. So I would say an elite TE (receiving and blocking) is very vaulable because they bring more to the table than just receiving.......worthy of a top 10 pick in the draft
