Smith wins 16 games in 5 years and he's treated like a child prodigy. Man, I just don't get it.

yeah because he had an all-pro supporting cast all this time, and was given every chance to succeed, and didnt do it.....oh wait....

people dont understand how stupid they sound going "Smith sucks! he couldnt get it done!"

couldnt get it done? with what? how?? hes been on a garbage team that switches coaching staffs every year and went through major shoulder surgery.

lol what planet are you guys living on? no common sense...hes worked hard, kept his mouth shut, stayed out of trouble, and fought through all the obstacles in his way to get back to a point where he might be given the chance to be something finally.

the days of Montana and Young are OVER. been over. get over it. sometimes QB's ARENT hall of famers. have some patience. i swear you guys are all Raiders fans with the way you talk about this team sometimes.
I never have and never will buy the notion that WR's make bad quarterbacks good. The quarterback position is just way too complex, and requires too many things to go right.

Boo-hoo. He's had it tough. Like no other QB has ever had to deal with tough circumstances in the history of the NFL.

Dude, it's not about Smith "sucking" for me (don't cheapen an argument just because someone disagrees with your perspective). I don't think he sucks, I don't he's an awful QB and I don't even think he's a bust. He's a fairly decent QB when healthy, that's pretty obvious. However, I personally think he has questionable instincts and a bad habit of coming up short in many key games, and I seriously question his ability to lead this (or any) team to the playoffs. That's just my opinion.

You might be right in that, given better talent around him and consistency at OC, he could actually be very good. I'm not saying he can't. I'm saying, why take the chance on that if (and only if) someone better (like McNabb is available)?

Point being, don't lump me in to the Smith haters, because I don't hate him and I don't think he sucks. I just don't think he's even close to being a better option than McNabb would be for us, and i don't get why people would want to keep giving Smith chances year after year when there could be a better option out there.

if that were the case then he wouldn't have taken a pay cut, benched to start the season, and there would be no rumors about getting Vick or McNabb....

but i guess you hear what u want to

I think he was talking about being treated that way by some fans.

I still don't see what's so hard to accept about this season being make or break for Alex. He's got a year left on his contract. He steps it up this season or he's gone, simple as that. He hasn't gotten nearly as many "chances" as Ghost or anyone else would have you believe.

Yes, I was talking about the fans, and I yes, I do think 5 years is plenty of time to show what a person can do (injuries or not). The NFL is a business, and there just comes a time where you have to cut your losses and move on to the next thing.

I mean, what makes this year (his 6th) any different than year 3 or year 4 or year 5? Why not give him a 7th year, or 8th or 9th year to prove to everyone that he can take this team the playoffs?

Truth is, some of you guys (including our management) are willing to take a chance on him. I'm just not. That doesn't make me a bad guy or even an Alex hater (and I certainly don't just "hear what I want to hear,"...that's the pot calling the kettle black). I just don't believe Smith has what it takes. That's called a difference of opinion.

I also wasn't condemning anyone for their belief in Alex Smith....I'm just saying I don't understand it.

drew brees got 5 years as well and like Alex was also injured however alex's injury was much more severe. Tell me how many good qbs has had a different OC every year?or how many good qbs has there been when they have a bottem 5 o lone in the league. He is finally getting the same coordinator just came of a good year where he got 18 yds in 10 games despite not touching a football in 2 years. If we get him a decent o line he will be a top 10 qb

The guy finally has some weapons as well where in the past he had only couple(Gore,Bryant)

3 years.... for those of you who can't count.... Smith has NOT played 5 years!
I'm not saying I'm on his bandwagon, but cmon. Lets keep facts straight ok?

No.

This is Niner Talk. Facts have to be crooked in here.

If he was a 5th round pick he would've been gone by now. Injuries to unproven players get them cut. And he is still unproven. The ONLY reason he's still here is because he was the no. 1 pick.

Injured or not, this year has to be his last chance . . . No more "potential," he's gonna have the same OC so no more excuses, win in SF in the 2010-2011 season or leave, it really is that simple.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same action multiple times and expecting a different result. So far the result has been the same, no playoffs. The variables have changed since 2005, in Smith's favor nonetheless. I'll give him one more chance to prove we aren't insane for giving it to him.

Brilliant!

Not the only reason. He also took a hefty(and deserved) pay cut! Not a reply to this post, but it still amazes me how some people say he's had 5 years to prove himself. 5 years? Do the math geniuses, he's started two and a half seasons worth of games. Some of which he was injured.

You simply don't get it, genius.

5 seasons have come and gone since he was drafted, and that's much more important than how many games he's actually played in. Here's what I mean: if Smith were to get injured in pre-season and miss the entire upcoming year, do you REALLY think the 49ers will bring him back? Do you think they'll say, "well, he's only really PLAYED around 3 seasons, so let's give him yet another shot?"

Of course not. They'll cut him loose for good, because another year would've come and gone and he (for whatever reason) failed to lead the team to the playoffs.

Point is, it's not about how many games a person actually plays, it's about their contribution every season, and if after 5 seasons (or 6, if he fails after this year) your #1 overall pick QB fails to lead his team to the playoffs (or even a winning record), fans are justified in calling for his removal. I see nothing wrong with this way of thinking...if you do, so be it.

only the first half of my post was in response to you, the rest was to everyone else.

You cant judge what Smith can and cant do based on the limited playing time hes had so far. you can say "oh, he cant lead us to the playoffs, he has bad habits, he does this wrong, etc". but the fact of the matter is, hes barely played.

2006 and 2009 are his only 2 real seasons. and 2006 would be considered his real rookie year, which wouldve been solid for a rookie starting QB. give him a chance to get into more than a couple situations before you judge what he can and cant do. once hes failed time and time again despite opportunities, then you can trash talk his abilities.

McNabb? why on earth would we want an old QB on his way out...we arent a super bowl contender right now, which makes McNabb, a short term option, useless. talk about guys that cant get it done. you think Smith fails under pressure? think he cant lead his team to win the big one? McNabb's whole career can be summed up as "almost, but not good enough".

btw, extrapolate Smith's stats over 10 games last year into 16 games, and he has almost the same numbers as McNabb did last year.

Steve Young was playing with guys named-Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Ricky Watters, Tom Rathman, William Floyd, Garrison Hearst, Brent Jones, Terrel Owens, Ed McCaffery, Guy McIntire, Jesse Sapulo, Harris Barton, Steve Wallace, Bart Oates, Derrik Deese, Ray Brown and those were just the guys on offense. And Steve Young was not exactly "tearing it up in tampa". I am not saying that Alex has not been somewhat of a disappointment but name one player that Alex Smith has played with that would of cracked the starting lineup for any of those teams Steve played with.

Bleacher Report IS lame. It's for fans who have too much time on their hands and want to pretend to be journalists without starting their own blog.

Yah it ranks right up there with realfootball365.

Seriously, I don't get why people keep posting the crap from either of these sites.

- McNabb is not old; he's 33, which is the same age Joe was when he won his 4th ring
- I don't expect McNabb to take us to the Super Bowl and win it all; that's not realistic
- What is realistic is having McNabb take us to the playoffs which he has done several times, and something we haven't see here since 2003
- Regardless of the reasons, Smith has never even led this team to a winning season, much less the playoffs
- You're right in that McNabb hasn't been able to win the big game...some great QBs can't seem to get over that hump (Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, Carson Palmer more recently)...that doesn't diminish their greatness. It also doesn't diminish the fact that they have taken their teams to several playoff appearances. Regardless of how you want to minimize that, it's a huge accomplishment.
- You seem to think it's more realistic to have Smith do something he's never done before (take a team to the playoffs) rather than have McNabb do something he's done 7 times previous...I don't understand that at all.

Bottom line, I'm not saying Smith CAN'T lead us to the playoffs (I have no idea if he can or can't)...I'm saying the odds are better with McNabb as our QB, which is why I want us to trade for him. I don't see why that's so controversial, considering Smith has never accomplished this and McNabb has (and is still young enough to get the job done).

My desire to have McNabb is less about Smith and more about McNabb.

Then go be a Philly fan whiner....

I mean, Steve Young was winning passing titles and MVPs, but because it took him forever to win one ring, he was crucified here.

Smith wins 16 games in 5 years and he's treated like a child prodigy. Man, I just don't get it.

Was that before or after he sucked in the USFL then sucked for the Bucs then didnt mesh with the offense for a few years, and took over for a 3 time superbowl MVP qb who won 4 in 1 decade?
