I'm sorry, I just don't understand the fascination with Alex Smith. I can't ever recall a player that so many people have given so many chances to like they have with Smith. I mean, Steve Young was winning passing titles and MVPs, but because it took him forever to win one ring, he was crucified here.

Smith wins 16 games in 5 years and he's treated like a child prodigy. Man, I just don't get it.

if that were the case then he wouldn't have taken a pay cut, benched to start the season, and there would be no rumors about getting Vick or McNabb....

but i guess you hear what u want to

I think he was talking about being treated that way by some fans.

I still don't see what's so hard to accept about this season being make or break for Alex. He's got a year left on his contract. He steps it up this season or he's gone, simple as that. He hasn't gotten nearly as many "chances" as Ghost or anyone else would have you believe.

Yes, I was talking about the fans, and I yes, I do think 5 years is plenty of time to show what a person can do (injuries or not). The NFL is a business, and there just comes a time where you have to cut your losses and move on to the next thing.

I mean, what makes this year (his 6th) any different than year 3 or year 4 or year 5? Why not give him a 7th year, or 8th or 9th year to prove to everyone that he can take this team the playoffs?

Truth is, some of you guys (including our management) are willing to take a chance on him. I'm just not. That doesn't make me a bad guy or even an Alex hater (and I certainly don't just "hear what I want to hear,"...that's the pot calling the kettle black). I just don't believe Smith has what it takes. That's called a difference of opinion.

I also wasn't condemning anyone for their belief in Alex Smith....I'm just saying I don't understand it.

I understand your position, and cannot entirely disagree. A. Smith has certainly been given a fair opportunity to show what he's got.

You've run out of patience with him. That's not unreasonable.

The question, for me, however is: what's the alternative?

Back to S. Hill? He doesn't look like the future.

On to N. Davis? Seems premature at this point.

Bring in someone else? McNabb? A possiblity, but who knows if its real, or if its just alot of rumor and innuendo.

A draft pick? Even Bradford and Clausen seem unlikely to win starting spots this year, wherever they end up. Tebow seems like a project, several years away from starting, at best.

So, for now, it seems like more patience is needed.

Maybe A. Smith continues to improve and, finally, shows something more than just promise this coming season.

If not, if he falters (again), then there's Nate Davis (once he's had a full offseason and training camp, and maybe part of the regular season as the No. 2 guy)--and he looks like he might prove himself capable, based on what little we've seen of him. IMHO.

drew brees got 5 years as well and like Alex was also injured however alex's injury was much more severe. Tell me how many good qbs has had a different OC every year?or how many good qbs has there been when they have a bottem 5 o lone in the league. He is finally getting the same coordinator just came of a good year where he got 18 yds in 10 games despite not touching a football in 2 years. If we get him a decent o line he will be a top 10 qb

If we can't trade for McNabb (I would do it for our second 1st rounder if that's what it took), we don't have any other options other than to stick with Smith. I totally get that. What I'm saying is, since we're rolling the dice on Smith coming up big for us, why not roll the dice on someone who has actually done it before (McNabb)?

Either would be a gamble, but IMO (for reasons I've stated in a number of posts already and won't bother to repeat), McNabb is the safer bet.

If we don't make a move for a veteran like McNabb, I'm resigned to the fact that we have to go with Alex Smith. I realize this.

OMG, you are actually trying to compare Drew Brees to Alex Smith??? Please tell me you're kidding.

When he left SD, Brees already had 3 years under his belt where he threw for over 3000 yards, he had two seasons where he threw for 24 and 27 TDs respectively, and in 2004 he had a passer rating of 105, won 12 games and led the Chargers to a division title.

If Smith had done anything close to that in 5 years, OF COURSE I'D WANT HIM TO STAY!!! I'd be right there with you saying, "hey, let's keep him....he's proven he can do it, look at the track record!"

Come on man, get real.

I'm not saying Smith hasn't had it tough, with injuries, changing OCs, bad supporting cast. I really do get that. But I also don't give a s**t about that. Boo-muthaf**kin'-hoo.

The NFL is a business, and sometimes things don't go the way you dream them up in your head. You have to fight, scratch, claw and kill to make things happen. If you can't (and sometimes even if you do), they get rid of you. That's life, man. They bring in the next guy and move on with nobody shedding any tears.

End of story.

I agree, trading for McNabb might be worth a gamble, (depending on the price). But didn't Philly say they're NOT trading him?

In the interim, A. Smith continues to hold the position.

The team has much work to do on offense. With the OL woes and unsteadiness at QB, its surprising they did as well as they did last season.

I'm with you--resignation. I'd add the hope that N. Davis is ready by, say, game 5 next season, just in case.

Right now, Davis is our only real hope (but only because he's an unknown, and hope springs eternal). Truth is, though, he's an even longer long-shot than Smith is at this point, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm not very hopeful.
dude. get over it..alex smith is the QB. end of story, nothing YOU can do about it.

Can you see the Niners drafting a QB somewhere in the 4th or 5th rounds? Cause the cupboard is really pretty bare. A. Smith, N. Davis and hope . . . .

Wouldn't it be nice to have another young guy with potential and a strong arm learning the ropes and working with the coaching staff and receivers.

Dude, this is a forum where people talk about things that they have no control over. If you don't want to talk about these things, go somewhere else. But this is the point of the forum....you realize that, right?

If there was someone worth drafting at that stage, they might take a chance. But if we don't make a move for a veteran, I think the game plan will be to ride Smith for all he's worth this year, then start from scratch next year if he doesn't pan out.

The x-factor will be Davis...in other words, if Smith falters and the season is lost, they'll put Davis in to see what he can do. If she shows well enough, they might go into 2011 with him as the starter, but they'll likely still bring in more QB talent regardless of what Davis does.

This shows the lack of knowledge in here. No one thinks hes a prodigy dude were just hopeful we didn't waste a pick. So there isnt anything to get.

Presuming that they cannot get a first tier veteran via trade or FA, it just seems to me to make alot of sense to try to grab yet another project QB now, so that a year or two down the road the team is not in the same position it is now--with so much dependent on just one guy--A. Smith.

I haven't given up on A. Smith, and I'm more than willing to root for the guy as the starter. But part of it is, as you say, resignation. I don't expect him to be another Rothlisberger, or Ryan, or Flacco.

So a long term plan is needed--add another project QB in the mid to later rounds, so this time next year, the team is better positioned to move on if necessary.

And, obviously, if the opportunity presents, a really good vet QB would be worth a trade right now. IMHO.

Just using a little hyperbole here as it was not meant as a statement of fact, and this is not a courtroom where we have to be exact in our words/meaning...surely you get the overall point, though. If you don't, oh well.
