Justin Smiley was a very good Guard and we let him go to Miami. Since he has been there, Miami has had a very good ground game. I think Rachal has talent as does Bass but we donot run the right blocking scheme. They should be in a zone blocking scheme ala Denver.
Also Jimmy Raye loves to run straight up the middle which is predictable and the Defense can jam the middle

So how do we fix the O-line?

The linemen who seem to have the biggest problems are Snyder, Rachal, and Baas. They are also our biggest, strongest, SLOWEST linemen.
Speed kills! Get quick linemen.
Guile beats strength! Bill Walsh won because he had a better plan than his opponents! Pass when your opponent expects you to run. Run when they expect you to pass, etc.
So:
1. Draft a first round tackle -- the quickest you can. (We still have a first rounder left for a speed rusher or a safety.)
2. Draft a second round guard -- the quickest you can.
3. Add a free agent guard -- Logan Mankins would be nice!
4. Replace Foerster if he can't coach according to this philosophy.
Thanks for the reminder!

I think we should do number 4 regardless of 1 thru 3. There is NO reason why our guys can't hold the point of attack for at least 3 seconds. And they've gotten beat off the ball constantly.
I mean $4|T hold those Pigs after practice and make em hit the sled on the whistle until they all do it as one. Keep em after and make em line up and run 25 second drill to keep them from getting flagged for false starts. Include the TEs' in this drill.
It's NOT that freakin hard. WTF is he doing anyway throwing beer and Pizza parties and showing them film? Seriously insane how they get blown off the ball and the Opposing Defense throws a party in our backfield.

We need an ex Sumo wrestler or Coach. I seriously do not believe that our guys are THAT bad. I think that Staley should take RT and Sims LT, sign a solid FA Tackle. Whichever side. And let him fight it out with the guys we have now. If he beats Sims then Sims backs up both sides. If he beats Staley for the RT spot then swap Staley to left and Sims still backs them up. I think that our Guards are fine(Baas and Rachal) so long as there is someone next to them who is solid. Arizona's front isn't weak and they did a solid job keeping em off Alex. Soon as Staley got back on the Line they were once again tissue paper. That is more continuity than anything but it still hurt us.

Our O-line problems continue and the way we fix it is beyond me...
The best idea that comes to mind is to simply tell our O-line that they need to play smart, but I guess that hasn't worked.

Our OL is much improved.
1. Our run blocking hasn't been this good since 2007.
2. We have a 21-year old rookie RT and rookie LG.
3. We are ranked 17th in the NFL (middle of the pack) with 19 sacks allowed.
4. The 10th rank team has allowed 3 sacks less than us (16)
5. The 29th rank team has allowed 7 sacks more than us (26)
We are on a pace to allow 34 sacks to last year's 40. 34 sacks allowed last year was a 15 ranking.
Remember, this is with a new Center and 2 rookies with one being in a very important position, RT.

2010: 1 sack for every 15.89 attempts.
2009: 1 sack for every 13 attempts
Again: new Center, rookie LG, and rookie RT.
We have improved and will keep improving.

Hold it a minute! The most current measure of how many sacks our OL is giving up is last week, when our QB was sacked 5 times. That extrapolates to 80 for a whole season. Wouldn't that be a new NFL record? Maybe we ought to wait a few more games before declaring our OL improved.
Ands where is the exhuberant jubilation with the hiring of Solari as our new OL coach, the key to producing a granite wall?

Davis may be more confident at left tackle, and moving staley to right tackle may allow both to be more consistent. Leave the interior alone and see how each player learns
If I remember each draft Davis was left side and staley was right.

1 sack was because ouur tackle stepped on his foot.
2 sacks were coverage sacks.
Our OL did fine.

They are not going to get any better if you keep messing with personnel. They have to gel and they are getting better. I just don't like the holding penalties, but some of that is rookies doing the one thing they have to do to protect the QB. I'd rather have that than pancaked QBs. It doesn't help that each QB (3) have a different way of playing either.
Of course, David Carr either waits to be sacked or throws a bad pass.

bench Chilo Rachal and Anthony Davis. Start Simms at LT(especially now that Staley is hurt AGAIN!!). Snyder at RG for Rachal and either Wragge or Boone at RT.

Don't just look at the number of Sacks but also the number of QB pressures and hits on the QB. Our OLine is horrible and possibly one of the worst in the league.
