So how do we fix the O-line?

Today's game showed the contrast between a well-coached offensive line, and one that is NOT well-coached.

For weeks now we have been seeing 3 or more Smith passes batted down by defensive linemen. The opposing DL keys the drops of the OL and reads the set of the QB. If they read a quick pass they read the QBs eyes and jump up and block the pass. Smith's release point is high enough that his passes should not be blocked like the are. Also, by having these big guys constantly in his face clogging the passing lanes, his opportunties for quick releases are much more limited.

Today we say Philly demonstrate how to stop that; CUT BLOCK THE D-LINEMAN!!! Philly took advantage of the aggressive charge of the 49ers and just cut them down like they had a chain saw cut down trees.

McNabb had clear passing lanes all day because the 49er DL were getting cut down leaving no hands in McNabb's face. Now the next thing that happens, is if the DL is constantly getting cut, they slow down their charge, and that also leaves the QB with more time. It has been working that way for years.

The 49ers have NEVER used a cut technique all season long that I have seen. Smith, and before him, Hill, have been getting passes blocked. It is no surprise then that the OL has struggled so badly in pass protection. They are not being taught fundamental techniques, not only in pass protection but run blocking. I just don't believe all of these guys are junk. Good coaches develop players. Good players don't come from college fully prepped for the NFL.

Though the above example is just about cut blocking, there are others I could list as well. No matter who they draft, unless they get an OL coach who knows how to teach the game, they will continue to struggle.

EDIT: On two different occasions during the broadcast today, Johnson and then Siragusa, mentioned how effective Philly was in cut blocking. Stating the obvious.

Ten four!
I have rewatched this season...we need more that just a OG and OT

1) Staley - Keeper
2) Rachel - Need to replace if he can't step it up..disappointment this season
3) Heitman: Does not get any push in the run game....we need a center that can generate push at the center of our line
4) Baas -- Unable to get low and use leverage..was consistently blown out everytime Gore was dropped for a loss...This is a must go..should not be starting
5) Synder --Pashos is better but we need to spend a #1 here..Snyder should not be starting...Pashos would be a good backup or could we slide him to guard. Is he worth re-signing?
New coach.

Scheme and preparation. The OL were blocking the shotgun just fine but the Eagles got smart and took the shortest route to the QB, up the middle and we weren't ready for it.

OMG - you have 30k posts, and I thought I was obsessed!

I don't think we have any disagreements.

The guards look sooo good, when they are used doing what they can do. The RT is a whole nother question.

no... no, i'm gonna have to disagree with this statement. our guards are s**t.
Change QBs according to zoners. Just put in Nate Davis and all of a sudden the o-line will block.

OR...we could do what smart winning teams do and build an awesome o-line through the draft and FA instead of paying 80 million dollars to a CB while we have no pass rush, and draft another project 1st round QB with no line to protect him.

People think we had to go to the shotgun because Alex cant play under center. Wrong..its because Alex has no TIME when we play under center. That means our o-line sucks so bad..we cant play straight up football.

We need a stud RT and RG.

Staley holds down the left side. Rachal is iffy. Heitmann is solid for the most part. Baas is inconsistent. Snyder is absolute garbage. He let Trent Cole in the backfield way too many times. Even the announcers were talking sht.
We better draft all lineman! This is sickening on both sides of the ball!

1. Yes
2. Yes--though I'm not ready to throw in the towel on him yet
3. No. He does a pretty good job--the problem is he has to peel of to help out the guards
4. Baas can run block really well. He just can't pass block nearly as effectively
5. Snyder is quite possibly the worst RT in the league and I'm not convinced that Pashos is a significant upgrade.

personally I think we should pick up a guard in FA (there are several good ones available), and draft a RT.
OL has a lot to do with coaching and strategy. Barry Simms didn't go from crap to solid starter because he became more talented. He was finally used properly.

Yeah and then we go and switch him with a gimpy Staley

Well, they shifted him from R to L. That made the difference

That's only becase they were forced to. It was under their noses and they never tried the proven veteran. Imagine if they started Simms at LT and Staley at RT. But that would require thinking on their part.
