So how do we fix the O-line?

Until the playcalling changes you cant put it all on the line. They are facing 8 and 9 man fronts every single first and second down.

Change the philosophy!
1. Scotty put an emphasis on size. He's said it over an over: "I want big players".
2. Sing put an emphasis on beating your opponent "mano-a-mano".
The linemen who seem to have the biggest problems are Snyder, Rachal, and Baas. They are also our biggest, strongest, SLOWEST linemen.
Speed kills! Get quick linemen.
Guile beats strength! Bill Walsh won because he had a better plan than his opponents! Pass when your opponent expects you to run. Run when they expect you to pass, etc.
So:
1. Draft a first round tackle -- the quickest you can. (We still have a first rounder left for a speed rusher or a safety.)
2. Draft a second round guard -- the quickest you can.
3. Add a free agent guard -- Logan Mankins would be nice!
4. Replace Foerster if he can't coach according to this philosophy.

Lets look at the game with Green Bay. Which Oline do you want to fix? First half or second half? When the defense knows a run is coming, they stack the box and there are too many people to cover. When there are four wide, the defense has to do just that. Defend. Now, there are less players coming at the Oline. Has to do more with the Offensive play calling than the line. Granted, we need some help, but not as bad as it looks. Not all on the Oline. Put it more on the scheme.

I think Baas is having a decent season. I think it's the right side that needs help
Also moving to the spread will help hide their weakness

This is dead on, but play-calling needs to change as well, ie less predictable.

I agree for the most part. This is what I'd do (in this order):
1)Fire Chris Forester immediately. Don't even wait until the end of the season. He's just flat out terrible. Replace him with a PROVEN OL coach that has experience in the Coryell/Spread scheme.
If one's not currently available in the NFL, pluck one from the college ranks.
2)Bench Rachal. I think he'll eventually be a good player, but that time is not now. Replace him with a quality FA. Fortunately, quality Guards aren't that hard to come by (unless you're the 49ers of late).
3)Let Baas walk in FA unless he can be retained for really cheap . Sign or draft his replacement using a first round pick (see above).
4)Snyder, I'm on the fence with this dude. He seems to alternate between really good and really crappy performances. IMO, he just probably needs to be coached up. Still, we should use a first day pick on a tackle (just in case).
The extra point:
Going into camp next year, Sing and Raye should put a heavy emphasis on using the spread more. In fact, it should be our base offense from this point forward. Smith has shown repeatedly that he thrives in it. And our biggest playmakers (Vernon, Gore, and Crabs) have even come out publicly in favor of it.
Seems like a no brainer to me.
And there you have it. A relatively easy way for us to be (at the minimum), a middle of the pack offense next year.

Rachal was a goat at the start of the season, but he has been playing much better lately. He is not the problem.

1) Sign free agent Logan Mankins
2) Draft Russell Okun with the first of our first rounders
3) Resign Baas to a reasonable deal
4) Sign a free agent center to replace Heitman

Get rid of Foerster and focus on getting PREMIERE OL early in the Draft and FA!!!!!!
Better get Wallace out there too. Still pissed with this pick bc we could have had Carl Nicks!!!! I doubt Wallace or Boone is ready because the OL coach sucks!!!!
When your unit is consistently horrible and making the same mistakes over and over, then its a coaching problem.
Need a RT and another guard.
Get rid of Baas and Snyder.

Do you all remember when we use to go for the smaller more athletic linemen? when and why did we change our philosophy from the one that worked?? Bill walsh would grab O-line men off the scrap heap and turn them into gold. We really need to change our philosophy back the one that worked.
